  • It’s been a while since I’ve ridden the other local loop at Cambusbarron… Starting out we head to the Cambu Dirt Jumps, then onto the North Third trails which are absolutely stunning. Today I was on the SCOTT Spark, I haven’t ridden it as much recently and I forgot just how much fun this thing was, it’s a flying machine and is incredibly capable!

Travel does not really matter all that much, geometry is more important. Back in the day, a 100-120mm bike was a XC bike with awful, road bike geometry, whereas a 180-240mm of travel was basically the same, but higher up and a slacker head angle, but not by much. Nowadays, we have more aggresive angles and comfortable bikes on which to attack a local trail. I would be more than happy to have a Spark, although, I would change the bars immediately for something with 40-50mm of rise.

It seems like 120mm, even a full suspension with 100mm is a LOT when riding most trails as mountain biking tires provide a lot of give as well for most trails. But if riding huge downhills and you have pro jumping skills, 100mm probably feels like you’re riding a road bike.
