Happy New Year! Glad to know I’m not the only one who’s removed a can cap and got lost. Also, “make sure you can read your own writing.” Sage advice. (Edit: I have those exact flat-nosed pliers left over from when I took a jewelry making course! I use them all the time.)
Very nice video. And very satisfying to see that very neat result when you very carefully remove that old toasted component and remove the solder and do a perfect repair job. Unfortunately I have repaired some old radios and amps recently and sometimes the leads of those failed components are wrapped so heavily around tube socket pins or other components that it is very very difficult to remove that failed component without taking a risk to damage (mechanically or by overheating) other components (for example old polystyrene caps or germanium transistors in perfect condition) or the tube socket etc.. So many times I just have to face the reality and use the J-hook method. So I just cut the leads trying to keep the remaining component lead length as long as possible and solder the new component to those leads using that J-hook method. It is a fully reliable and fast method and if you have to change that component again, it is very easy to do again and again. The bad thing of course is that it looks bad and feels bad if we are talking about Zen and the art of tube amp maintenance. 😁
beautiful video. I am just wonder do I need to Bias the amp if I am swapping out some of the tube for example 6L6GC Jan Phillip to something like JJ6l6GC or Gold lion KT66(6l6)?
Why no solder vacuum? I'm sure you get asked this a bunch a find it annoying, but man it changed my life. So much easier and you get a nice clean hole every single time with no effort. Happy new year! Thanks for the great videos.
Hi, first of all thank you for these great videos. I just got a pair of MC30 and I will be restoring them. Terry wrote on the "Hints and Kinks" topic to leave 160P's in place since they are "mylar-foil capacitor and it's not likley you can beat it's sound and quality at any price you can afford." I am actually confused since you still replaced them. Do you still advice me to replace them?
Great channel you have gotten me inspired. Question I have recapped a Realistic STA-90. It still needs a alignment. I see inexpensive signal generators and scopes on ebay and amazon do you have any recommendation on what to look for or stay away from? Or do you have a video you can recommend to watch.
Happy New Year Mark! Great information as always. After watching a number of McIntosh amp rebuilds I get the sense that the initial cost of these amps is due to the transformers. I know they make their own transformers but I wonder if that is a differentiator in their amps.
I inherited a TV 2c/u. It doesn't seem to be as easy as the TV 7. I was wondering since you have a lot of experience with these testers, If you happen to have one, might it be possible to make a video on how to use it? I would very much appreciate your feedback.
Very nice tutorial Mark. What criteria do you use in the poly-cap selection? i.e. the mix of Sozo and Solen. There's quite a price difference so I assume you select them for a purpose.
Happy new year hopefully you had a nice Christmas not like me. Why replace the capacitor why don't you just cut it free and leave it in situ and better quality electrolytics under the chassis plenty of room.
I don't understand changing that big can for another can? why not just leave it disconnected and put some smaller caps underneath plenty of room. You should really have a double resistor where you've got high current flow better flow of electrons. double the value of the 1 resistor to give you the value you want with the two, ideally matched if you can do this at any high current area. What type of I'm assuming audio grade capacitor are using in the audio circuit ideally you want to use polystyrene is the best. Well voltage does have a bearing if it's too high the cap will degrade in quality overtime it needs to reform itself if the voltage is too high can't reform, anything 20% higher is fine but I wouldn't really suggest higher than that. Get yourself a decent DAC for your phone or pc the ifi hip-dac is the best $150 portable, does pcm, dsd, dxd, and mqa, balanced and unbalanced nothing comes close triple the price
So glad to see a new video Mark! Keep em coming! You've helped me learn so much and I really appreciate it.
Nice to hear from you again! And a happy new year to you and your family, of course

Bonjour de France : respect good job. Mai a combien de dollars ça va coûter cette restauration ? Merci

Nice vid, very detailed, please keep up the good work. The McIntosh equipment is beautiful, but way out of my price range, wish I had a rich uncle.

thank you for this video, i have a pair of these mc30 one sound beautiful and one not so
this video gives me something to checks thanks

Happy New Year Mark...woooohooo!!!!
Is it supposed to keep the uf close to the same as original value?
Why add the 80uf to 30uf?
Happy New Year Mark, great video, take care and be safe, 73s Dan KI6VBC.
Great work as always.. I’m not a fan of Solens, but that’s just my personal taste.. Happy New Year, Mark!
Could you please inform where to get the Teflon tubing? Which diameter do you recommend for general work on tube audio equipment? Thank you.

You had some blanking, (no video) in various locations of the timeline.
Back to making real good videos

You're exceeding the limit voltage of the can capacitor.
Where do buy the large can electrolytics?
hayseedhamfest.com
They'll make you whatever you need.
the red wire looks a bit shabby
I don't under stand. What u wanna do its vst of tim I m doing from 50 year hi fi radio TV so it look like joke shet
DUDE Have some consideration with the test tones, people are WEARING HEADPHONES
nice work! Please try to refrain from saying "uhmmm". We don't mind not hearing anything, in lieu of the aforementioned "uhmmm". Thanks
This video will be around 60 years to restore this AMP a second time.
Great material, as your work goes. Thanks.
