Coach Neville should be coaching in a different league. He has lost his way and the players are uninspired as a result. I was surprised by his hiring and am not surprised by his results. The team is more talented than the results show.

He said there was effort. Also said some players seem too complacent. He said that he's responsible for the lineups, the formation, the strategy, the tactics. Then says that some players need to pull their thumbs out of their bums. He said he's got to pick the right players based on who is having good moments? Who is having good moments and who is having bad moments? And why? Gio spoke in word salad from the perspective of syntax. Neville speaks in word salad from the perspective of being self-contradictory.
"..to go beyond your capabilities, to try something different, to come out of your comfort zone and push yourself and the rest of the team to not just play simple and safe."
Who would want players to play beyond their capabilities? Why is Neville asking them to try something different when he keeps trying the same strategy and tactics with different players week in and week out? If the same strategy and tactics don't work regardless of which players are on the pitch... Maybe the players aren't performing well because they are outside of their comfort zone, because Neville's asking them to play beyond their capabilities? Why does whoever is playing right centerback always get burned by Mosquera not tracking back to defend? If we just played simple and safe maybe we'd do better. We aren't even doing well when it comes to the fundamentals, the basics of passing, defending, moving... Neville has the team playing a high line with slow centerbacks. Neville said in a training video that he doesn't want anyone challenging 1v1 and now nobody steps to the ball, they just let the opposing team pass it around with impunity. We pass the ball around uselessly in our own defensive third but don't progress the ball through midfield. Neville denied that ball progression through midfield was a problem. We brought in an expensive designated player with a history of playing as a second striker and a stated preference to play wide with the intention of making him a lone striker center forward. We brought in a player who has historically played as an 8 and are trying to force him into a leadership role as a 10, despite there being little indication that it's his disposition. Neville brought in a slow-ass centerback because he loves his left foot but is trying to implement a system that relies on speedier centerbacks. Neville talked about playing a back 3 even though none of our centerbacks can step up into central midfield and none of our central midfielders can drop in to play between two wide centerbacks.
Neville is bad at his job but keeps throwing unnamed players under the bus for being too comfortable. They are actually uncomfortable because your strategy and tactics don't play to their strengths or consider their limitations. It's embarrassing for everyone.
Paulson hired Neville based on name recognition, bro vibes, and proximity to David Beckham. It's pathetic.

Phil, Liam, Ned, NEED TO GO NOW! They obviously don't know what they are doing. Our Manager cant manage. Our Defensive coach can't coach, and Ned is just a puppet for Merritt and is completely useless. Collectively, they took a team of great players and made them horrible.

At this point just stop doing these press conferences. It's the same thing every week. Concede 2+ goals, walk in and say it is unacceptable, blame the refs, we are going to get it together don't worry, etc. How many millions of dollars has this organization spent to be in dead last place?

There’s a lot of negativity in these comments. Portland has a lot of new players and they haven’t gelled yet. It takes more than just talent. It takes time. I think they fired Gio too soon (two seasons off from pks short of an MLS Cup!) when the front office wasn’t supporting him with talent. Now they have the talent, and it will take time for them to come together.

Wtf are you talking about. Are you new to the team. A new goalie, cb, and a dp striker. Everyone else is the same team. Most having played 3 or more years together. This isn't a new team that needs to jell. This is a team with absolutely no idea how to play tactically and that's coaching.
