    I love when people react to modest mouse. Some of the most thought provoking lyrics I’ve heard throughout my childhood.

    Modest Mouse aren't just smart, they're top-tier storytelling genius. I saw you did a reaction to World at Large; wondering if you picked up on the verse of the drifter trying to preserve his self in the face of interpersonal commitment and social expectations: "Well, all that icing and all that cake, I can't make it to your wedding, but I'm sure I'll be at your wake".

    Anything off the good news album is great. Not to be that guy but this band kept me alive in high school, ocean breathes salty is great, the view, the generic one float on, Dramamine, they’re an insanely good band with a lot of deep meaning

    In the studio recorded version of this song, the line "Evil me, oh yeah I know" kicks in with some sort of dual-pitch harmonic, complemented by the Cello. Sounds like a chant and gives me shivers every time. I don't think they nailed it in this live version, but still a really good sounding version of this song. And also a great analysis, MrLBoyd, you really are a cut above other reaction channels.

      I was thinking that too. Definitely should have reacted to the studio version. I love Isaac to death. Modest Moise is probably my favorite band BUT his live vocals can sometimes be lacking.
      The live instrumentals are amazing though.

      I had a friend who said that she was listening to this while on mescaline. She said the other voice was the Devil. She was not very religious, but this song still scared her every time she tried to listen to it. Reminder that Issac was in his 20's when he wrote this. Amazingly talented individuals.

    Issac is an atheist, just not a super outspoken one. You can pick up on it if you listen to enough of their music though. My favorite lyrics of his about his lack of faith;
    "I'm in heaven trying to figure out which stack
    They're going to stuff us Atheists into
    And Peter and his monkey laugh and I'll laugh with them
    I'm not sure what at
    They point and say:
    "We'll keep you in the back,"
    Polishing halos, baking manna and gas."

Kind of disgusted. He said he was a pedo. It was the first time i was able to separate art from the person. He wasn’t a good person. But a hell of a writer

    That line 'i want a better place or just a better place to fall' is so powerful. It's a clear dissatisfaction with one's life and legacy thereafter. Also maybe speculation from the speaker to suggest 'why do i need to settle for a 1 in 10 chance'. Really profound and emotional.
    Next one to check from them has got to be 'good times are killing me' its really fun, you cant really go wrong with this band.
    Dont need to make videos for any of these but please listen to Custom Concern, Broke, Heart Cooks Brain, 3rd Planet as well my two musically favorite: Life like weeds and Dramamine.

    Modest Mouse has been around since ‘93. In my opinion they’ve never released a bad album. That’s a track record few bands could claim. The fact that they’re not more of a household name (outside of being considered a one-hit-wonder with Float On) is mind boggling, but I’m not really complaining. Those who know, know. And from the comments in this video you all know and love. It’s great to see a great reaction of a great song by a great band, even if it’s the live version.

    He's calling Bukowski an asshole because he is actually an asshole. He's just a poor man's Henry (not Arthur) Miller. Tropic of Cancer is 5 billion times what Bukowski thought he was.

    If you want more musically interesting stuff from them, King Rat is pretty sick. They’ve damn near got a full orchestra on that track. Lyrically also pretty interesting.

    Appreciate that you took the lyrics into account while listening to this. It's really the best part. Listen to the album version of this if you get time. Much cleaner. Isaac likes to ad lib on stage. You got my sub man. Thanks for giving it an intillectual perspective.

  • @trumanwalls3668
    @trumanwalls3668 10 месяцев назад +3

    Sometimes I wish you did the studio versions.. It is what it is.
    And inherently, nothing wrong with athiests, except when they're on social media.. They seem to take every opportunity to let everyone know they're athiest for some reason.. I don't understand that need at all.
    My problem with it is I cannot figure out the hell the point is.
    They're not trying to convince anybody else to be athiest, because they don't make any points. They just find any mention of anything involving God and boom, there they are with "There's no God."
    Like, okay...? You feel better now?
    ....
    But you did hint at one of the arguments they make that is asinine. The belief that people follow religion and be good solely because the religion tells them to.
    It's also a view Bo Burnham put out there in "From God's Perspective."
    It's a pretty stupid assumption to make. Because you're an athiest with a natural understanding of "right and wrong," then you've already proven god is absolutely not necessary to know the difference, therefore, no reason to assume anyone else only understands the difference because a god defines it.
    No, you don't need a god to tell you not to do bad things, but who would want a god with no opinion on the subject?
    ...I'm rambling.. I love this band. I think the lead singer is pretty much the brains behind all of their work.

      There's plenty of us atheists that aren't the keyboard warrior types you're used to. Unfortunately the super militant ones ruin it for the rest of us.
      It is a bit ironic though to see people complaining about "outspoken atheists" when you are 100x more likely too see an outspoken religious person on the internet sharing their unsolicited opinions.

    • @trumanwalls3668
      @trumanwalls3668 10 месяцев назад

      @mhotl 1. Just because I'm speaking of one doesn't mean I am the other.
      2. If I were, I would not be ironic because the topic was already presented. I didn't go out of my own way to make a declaration to let everyone know in the most asinine way what I believe.

    • @BlGGESTBROTHER
      @BlGGESTBROTHER 10 месяцев назад +4

      @@trumanwalls3668 To your second point: you did go out of your way to let people know what you believe by leaving your comment. As if atheists needed your approval in the first place. "And inherently there's nothing wrong with atheists except," talk about a stupid comment.
      You're just proving my point though. Religious folks have no problem sharing their opinions but freak out if an atheist does the same. They simply can't handle discourse on the matter and have a strange need to control the narrative (which, by-in-large they already do).
