Owning both brands, I have to agree...the Calatrava would be my choice. Having said that, Rolex has done a fantastic job with the new 1908. However, Patek has been widely known for dress watches, while Rolex for their sports watches. I believe that Patek will hold their value much better with the Calatrava. I prefer the thinner case of manual-wind watches for dress. You can’t go wrong with either model!

My preference is a manual wind movement, that said the 1908 is quite attractive. I prefer the lugs on the Rolex.

I like the way the 1908 looks more.
I love my Patek 1972 Calatrava with auto movement, though it is thin as 6mm Buckley dial in yellow gold. I don't think you need to. Line up for 1908 asoat people are keeping eyes on those sport models only. I still find the diamond is too large for dress watch, 33-36 is perfect for me, of course my wrist is 17.5 cm only

The 1908 is not available in rose gold. Only yellow or white. I really liked the Patek 6119 when I first saw it, but the Rolex 1908 has pushed it off the table. In comparison the 6119 looks a bit overdone, a bit too 'presh'.

Which 1908 ? Since I made this video Rolex released the platinum with the ice blue guilloche dial. Right now the value of that vs the Patek is compelling given they’re the same price. I went for the Patek last year but right now I’d do the same
The real winner is the consumer, who now has another choice.
Rolex lied about stating it was the first waterproof watch.
The patek 6119 is $32,000 the 1908 is $22;000.

The 1908 is a really impressive looking dress watch from Rolex, but overpriced compared to the competition (new vs. new). If you’re just looking for a gold dress watch and are brand agnostic there are many options, particularly if you’re prepared to buy on the secondary market - Cartier, Breguet etc. In this comparison, Patek wins imo.

As a Rolex President owner, I was extremely disappointed in the trash from Rolex. Even Timex would have been ashamed of the emoji wheels! At least the 1908 offers some potential for future.
I’m afraid this might be like trying to compare apples and oranges. It doesn’t really make sense.
They are not in the same class, just like Mercedes benz and Rolls-Royce.
