This song was written and sang only by Miranda Lambert. It was written about Blake sheldons brother in a tragic accident. He could not perform it. Only she could make the tears fall by singing this song; I play it alot after loosing many siblings in the past years. She is the Queen of Country in my eyes and I am way much older; thank you Miranda for performing this so eloquently. you are a true hearted person. Even though you are not with Blake such a lovely gift you gave him performing this song for his brother:(

This song still gets to me... My father was murdered on Dec. 10th, 1995 by gang members trying to rob him while he was making a delivery to a store. Unfortunately, it was before I was born on Feb. 11th. the following year in 1996. I never got to meet him & he never got to hold me. I probably interpret this song differently than others would. More of a "Why did you have to leave me in this world without you?" "How dare you leave without seeing me even once". People used to tell me & still do...that it doesn't matter because I never met him, telling me I'll be fine, there no reason for me to cry, etc. but as a child I was lost.
This song just has so many memories of my mom & I hugging eachother & thinking about him to this song.

When I first heard this song. I cryed like a baby. I lost my mom to cancer 9 yrs ago she was only 42. I was pregnant with her first grandchild then. She never got to see him or hold him. I can remember when she had my anut help her to hold my belly. And what she said to her grandbaby who wasnt born yet I'll never forget. She said how she was sorry she couldn't hold on, she wants him to know all about her, that she wanted to live, how much she loves him, that she was sorry for being weak and failing him, and she hopes that he will never hate her and more. I have 3 kids now and another one on the way. Ive kept my promise to my mother my kids know about her, know who she is, I tell them about the fun times and more. This song makes me think of her and miss her. I miss our good times together, I miss our talks, her smile, her voice, I miss her hugs and more. I miss her so much. Took me years to break down and accept her death. I would do anything to have my mom back. I lost a huge part of me when she died. But i shes an Angel now. I know shes watching over me. She will always be my mother. She will always be my inspiration and more. I love u mommy and I miss more than u know. And when I visit ur Grave and see ur headstone im always gonna cry. I lost my husband June 30th, 2023 and listening to this song, it conveys exactly how I feel. I'm not ever going to get over him and especially being witness to his death. Stroking his hair as he lie dying and there was nothing I could do for him. The 30th of every month, and especially every June 30th at 2:21 in the morning will stick with me for the rest of my life. People tell me I will be okay and that it will take time to get over his death but I feel I will never get over him or his death. It was just too traumatic an event for me.

This song helped me so much after my dad died. I used to sit and read a letter I wrote to him after he died and listen to this song on repeat and just cry it was a great release for me and it helped me so I wouldn't cry when people asked me questions about him or how I was doing. I lost my dad, found him dead on the floor of the kitchen, December 11th 2022. He was obviously trying to microwave a frozen burrito with French's yellow mustard. The EMTs said that it was a massive heart attack, and he was dead before hitting the ground. He didn't do much. His retirement consisted of seeing how much coffee he could drink in a given day, and keeping his recliner from floating away. I still miss him. And, hey, it was his retirement. He could spend it any damn way he wanted, and he did.

Dean Giusti thanks it's a special song to me cause it helped me get through the pain and heartbreak when I lost a close family member and it's songs like this one that I can relate to and that helps me get through the tough times with losing a loved one cause those kind of songs are my favorite. My dad died around a month ago. He was a Marine in Alpha 1/1 2nd platoon in Vietnam at the beginning of the tet offensive. He and the other Marines there never got the recognition deserved. President Trump finally recognized someone he served with and awarded John Canley the Medal of Honor. My dad made it through a lot in his life . He spent his last Christmas right before dying in the hospital and died alone because of COVID restrictions which he didn't have. My dad was a great and giving man . He would help anyone and actually have seen him do so many times. He has bought many people vehicles when they didn't have one . Just the kind of person I was blessed enough to call dad.

This song resonates with me because I lost my best friend from high school Feb 11th 2011. Murdered and thrown in a ditch where she layed for a month before we (the authorities) found her.. December 30th was her bday and i remember that December prior to losing her better than any. We had just celebrated her 26th bday by going to see the Trans siberian orchestra at the fox theater... So the lyrics hit home. Her headstone was not placed until 3 years after she was gone due to lack of funds to have it put in the ground. Once I saw it in stone... It made it real. My denial was gone once I saw her name written in gold metallic lettering in the ground.

My uncle was wheelchair bound his entire life and had to live with my grandparents his entire life. He died because he fell asleep in his wheelchair and it cut off his breathing. OMG - I don't know how old you are - I'm fifty-three years old & I can't "deal" with my daughter's loss. She died many years ago, & my ex-husband & I divorced, because we couldn't accept it. We are best friends now, but we are so F'd up about losing our little girl. We did everything right - she died of a medical condition & we are NOT the same after over 20 years!!!

My nephew had a bad marriage and he done things he shouldn't of done but we don't know the pain that people go through in bad times he took his own life but we have a gracious savior his name is JESUS that no one goes to heaven but through him. praise JESUS.

More than that. Blake wrote it about HOW HE FELT after his brother died, not just about his brother.
All of us who have never known Blake or his brother can still know the feeling of never getting over losing someone who we did know. That's why this video has been watched so many times (36 million as I write this), I think. Also because Miranda Lambert did such a good job performing it.
However sad it is that they had to split up, at least they were able to create this for all of us while they were together.
I didn't know that at first, so when l originally saw the video, l thought it was in reference to her and Blake shelton, breaking up, and the headstone with Shelton represented the death of there death! It was more interesting that way!
I'm glad you wrote that. I think most people listen and think it's some sort of break up song. No wonder Blake couldn't sing it. I wouldn't be able to either!! Anyway, good on ya!!

That would surprise me, too, but I have a guess about why she would still sing it.
Whatever her feelings about Blake and their time together are now, this song they created together was an accomplishment that has survived that. She is a dedicated entertainer who would probably live with any discomfort she feels performing it now in return for the satisfaction she might get from pleasing her fans who still enjoy hearing it. Kinda' like how listening to a really sad song can make you feel so good and so bad at the same time.
There's probably a good country song in that complex mix of emotions if someone can figure out how to write it.

It doesn't matter the length of time a loved one has passed on. When you're extremely close to them a part of you goes with them, which causes a void, an emptiness, and nothing or nobody ever fills that back up. The loss doesn't get better with time. The only thing that does happen is everything changes; nothings ever the same again. But, you learn to put on a brave face and walk the earth in a way which honors those dear departed ones. And I couldn't speak as a child, my soul was so wounded, by the loss of him! My Dad was beautiful to look at, he was like a dream in a magazine! I look just like him in so many ways! As I learned to speak more and grow up more I learned to LOVE him, and forgive him, I realized my Dad was to young to handle Fatherhood at 21! He was to immature, as I grew up I would see him out, and I wondered once a year I would see him like that,we didn't live in the same town! Year's past and he no longer knew who he was, and he passed away! His family asked me if he passed away, if I would want his ashes, and I said yes! I came home from Disneyland with my oldest son, and found is ashes on my porch,I was devastated, my life has been really hard! You're Dad isn't far from you, he lives on in you!

Every time I hear this song, I end up with tears in my eyes. I'm 73 and it reminds me of all of the sadness I have felt for lost loved ones, my mom first, then my dad...and wonderful friends who I've shared their lives with and then they're gone. Your unique voice, however, is truly inspirational in that even with loss there were so many wonderful memories we shared, with laughter, dreams, hopes and love. Thank you, Miranda!

NO, you are wrong again go back and do your homework. They were sitting at home and Blake said that he started talking about his brother and Miranda started writing the song and yes he help but she wrote most of it. But for the songwriters she put her name and Blake's name.
I agree but this song wasn't written for anyone who passed in her family, it was written for Blake Shelton's brother and because Blake wouldn't be able to sing it without breaking down, he asked Miranda to sing it.

This song brings me so much pain but I love it so much! I just lost my daddy this past June he was my everything and I he's little girl. He hid his cancer from me, he had aggressive leukemia...when we found out 3-4 weeks later he was gone and a huge part of me died with him that very early morning. My sister is lossing her 2 yr. old son to a brain tumor. There was a long fight with this cancer and she has never left his side. He's been on hospice since friday. I lost my dad on 12/12/12 and to this day I still miss him like crazy, and every year since he has passed I have heard this song on that day 😢 He wasn't just my dad, but my hero and bf. He was a Vietnam Veteran, had a stroke, was paralyzed on the left side, then got throat cancer from Agent Orange. Had to have his voice box removed and it was 12 years of an emotional rollercoaster but not one time did it stop him. He never gave up and could always put a smile on your face. This song has meant so many things to me over the years... I had a boyfriend back when it came out who broke my poor young heart and I cried to this song for months. Then I watched the music video about a year after my grandma passed. OH BOY. I ugly cried for hours, days. And then again when my mom passed; now I cry every time, but it feels cathartic. This is my absolute favorite terribly emotional song.
