- This week we are back at it working on the 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ and continuing on the rust repair. Today I will cutting out the old rusty rocker panels and replacing them with 2x6" tube steel. This rocker panel will take the place of the old rocker and also be strong enough to act as a rock slider. In this series I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. Today we will be continuing on the passenger side with the rocker panel. This process is very similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 3x6" rocker panel replacement. If you have any questions that the video does not cover, make sure to leave them below.

When you were doing the lift kit, I was wondering about all that work on such a rusted out XJ. Now I see that rust isn't an issue after all. It is so rewarding watching you reclaim a vehicle that others would write off as junk.
Almost exactly the same condition as was my zj, pretty much did frame stiffeners, sliders, longarm switch all at once
Its about relative value. I just paid decent money on a little ole ladies XJ because it was.....a little ole ladies. It needs rear leafs, u bolts (broken) and her husband used aluminium and latex paint to put lipstick on the pig on the rockers. It was quite funny actually. I knew what he'd done. It is perfect and unmolested. ...so it was worth it.
Good job man.
I need to do this to mine. 🙄
Been putting it off.
Not a lot of people would try and take this kind of a project on. You have inspired me to just get started !
All of us watching who own an XJ long enough this is our future 😭.
thanks Russ… now im depressed .. lol
Great to see this younger generation with these types of skills. Really enjoyed the video.
My 99 WJ is almost road ready, and I know I'm ready to get back behind the wheel to see how much difference the new parts have made.
When I see a vehicle in this condition I just think of it as a lost cause right away. But this repair has put me in perspective of how savable any vehicle is and how cheap projects can be
I'll be doing the same thing soon. Finishing up floor pans.
Thanks for posting. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks brother. Everything you have done in this and the video before this is pretty much everything I have have to do to mine. I was starting to get a little discouraged and I have years of experience. But I also suffer from bi polar and perfectionism so everything becomes very difficult in my head. If I don't think it's going to come out perfect I tend to never end up doing it. I know what has to be done but seeing it actually being done makes it easier for me. I was really stressing about spending the money on OEM floor pans and like you said they're expensive and I was having a hard time visualizing what it would look like with regular sheet metal and whether it would come out good without having bead rolls and the right curvature. Also I wasn't sure on what size tubing I was going to use for the rock sliders. I also have to do the rear quarter tuck. It really goes to show that even us guy's with past experience can learn from the younger generation. So please keep them coming brother it's really appreciated. 💯
Glad I can help. I think that as well in my head, but I try to stay positive because it always ends up turning out someone decent in the end.
That spatter flinch at 30:55 !! Saving up for a better welder and this’ll be on my short list of to do
Nice job. This is the job that is ahead of me and this really helped. Excellent instructional video. The one thing that I’m dreading is the welding of thin metal to the 2x6 slider. Hope mine looks haft as good as yours
very nicely done Austin,well done.
Patience and doing the job right, it'll last forever. Great work! Now I want to my Jeep!
I am surprised how big of a project you took on for this jeep. great work on all of this stuff love your videos
I was t-boned in my xj a week ago. The door sill and rocker is all bent in. I've never welded or done any kind of body work and let me just say, your videos are a god-send. I'm looking forward to getting everything squared up again
I really enjoy your channel. It’s really helped me out a lot with my XJ. Thanks for all the great how to content.
Great jo! Keep it up. Looking forward to seeing this project finished. God bless and stay well.
I come back to your build videos anytime i need some motivation. Thanks man, hope you're doing well. Just got a np231 with sye and I need to swap the input shaft for my cherokee. your videos are helping.
Nice job Austin.👍👍
Nice!
After watching that im tired now. Need a nap.
If you own an xj always keep a heater core by pass hose in your glove box ,just order one that fits an Lt 1 Camaro then get the 3\4and 5\8 fittings plus 4 hose clamps, cause you just never know, justsayn.
great video, I'm gonna pretty much follow your method on my 99 XJ...
On my 98zj used round 3inch tube, cause zj rocker panels curve perfect fit hidden inside, 3 square tube ties welded to frame stiffeners, as are longarm conversion kit part of it, only a 4inch & 31s as mainly a daily
A few tricks I've found with rusted bolts. Tightent before loosening it helps break the rest. The other is put the socket on the bolt and hit the socket with a Hammer it kind of shocks the rust a bit add some heat and some spray and usually comes out.
Great video Ill be doing this come this fall , Just getting the lift in and will get to the rockers by December
Subscribed. Late to the party, I know. Picked up an 01 that seems to be in identical condition. From what I gather, it sounds like you start with the frame stiffeners? They kinda seem to be the foundation for everything.
Nice job I would have put the same up towards the top also I'm going to do the same thing to mine however I'm going to use a 2x8 rectangle 1/4-in walled and I'm going to put four supports from the subframe under the channel for more support The reason I'm going with 2x8 instead of 2x6 and it looks like there's only going to be like an inch and a half left over and be running over rocks and stuff don't want to damage the doors those things are going to get beat up pretty bad so I figured 8 in that'll give me 3 and 1/2 3 1/4 in sticking out past the door instead of inch or inch and a half just for more protection just food for thought brother Nice job
Nice job..!
hell yeah brother
Nice job 👍
Great job! What precautions do you take when welding on the Jeep? Do you disconnect the battery or computer?
I disconnect my battery.
Looking good 👍
Sooo how long of tube do I need for each side?
tip: when using sealant wet the tip of your finger and it wont stick to it. great vid man
Agreed, I was doing that as well.
Excellent video ❤️🇺🇸❤️ thanks... Xj life
I see you used that Lincoln 140 mig (or I'm guessing you did anyway), was this on 110v? I need to do this to my Jeep badly but am stuck trying to figure out if I can do this job well on 110v as that is all I got right now
Yup it's 110 and its plenty powerful enough. The welder is rated up to 5/16" on flux core at 110v.
@@OutJeeping awesome thanks so much for the reply! You still have/like that Lincoln? Really trying to find the best bang for the buck for this job along with needing to do some patch work to the quarters/floors eventually.
Can this same technique be used on a 2004 WJ?
Yes sir, there are some WJ builds on some online forums with 2x6" Rockers.
So happy I live in AZ. Don’t ever have to worry about rust haha
You guys have sun damage though lol
Good morning, What would you estimate, in hours, it took you to install the rock sliders?
All depends how far you want to take it with painting the insides of the door sills, removing the doors, or if you have a lot of rust repair. You could get it done in a weekend or 8hrs or so.
I really want to do this to my Jeep but I’m very nervous about cutting out a perfectly good panel :/
Definitely not a shortage of rusty XJ's in Wisconsin lol.
@@OutJeeping lol, yes, I can see it would make sense in your case :)
Nice job man, what gauge sheet metal did you sue for the inner/ upper rocker panel??
16 gauge steel
Can you print over POR 15?
I guess that answers my question
Yup, it definitely needs to be too coated if its exposed to sun as it is not UV resistant.
@@OutJeeping do you have to paint it while the POR 15 is still wet?
@@petersaurusrex9135 For best adhesion you can paint over it when it is still tacky. But once it's dry you can take a higher grit sandpaper or scotch bright to scuff up he por-15 to have it adhere the best.
What is the welder setup that you used to do this? Also, what thickness steel did you use?
I used a Lincoln 140 Mig with Flux core. The 2x6 had a 0.125" wall thickness.
hello my jeep xj 2.5l 1994 when driving when it is hot it tugs and breaks below 3000 revolutions and over 3000 revolutions is ok you can advise something in poland nobody knows what's wrong with it ?
changed cables, candles, shaft sensor, lamdba probe
It's hard to say what is could be without me seeing it in person. If I were you I would keep researching the symptoms and looking on Jeep forums.
ok I can't find information anywhere, but thanks for the hint, best regards
Great job and doing it with minimal tools as well. Some of you Amazon links do not work.
Thanks, I will go in and fix them.
Nice work. What welder did you use?
Lincoln 140 MIG
Love this video how much would you say you spent on the metal used for these rock sliders?
I got a deal through my friends work. So all the sheet metal, 2x6", and 2x4" for fixing all the rust I got for $150. Though steel prices will vary in your area and where you purchase from.
@@OutJeeping alright thanks for the reply!
How thick is the tube steel? 3/16th? 1/4?
I used 1/8" plenty strong and didn't want to add too much weight by going thicker.
@@OutJeeping Thanks!
Nice job god bless
🙌
Use a non-acetate others promotes rust
Welding in shorts. My man.
😄
i wonder why your not wearing flip flops. lol
Step 1 when buying a new Jeep: rip out the carpet before it rots out the floor!
You need a face shield
I'll have to buy a new one, both of mine I can't see through lol
@@OutJeeping I seen ya turn your head a few times while using the 4 1/2 in cutting wheel
