The CMAs would deny a black country singer and 20+ years later award a white performer who would remake the song. The problem was never the song it’s the skin.
For those of us who were there, we remember when Darius Rucker left Hootie and the Blowfish to be a solo artist and decided to pivot to country, and even back THEN, the white country music establishment stuck their noses up at him, and it's still kinda debatable whether or not they ever accepted him! Meanwhile as the genre shifted to "Bro Country", which was cishetero white meatheads incorporating a hip-hop (black) sound to their music, country fans ate that shit up! Not all, of course, because we still had the old white country gatekeepers saying Bro Country wasn't "real country" because "it sounded to urban", but the younger white country fans that would repeat that rhetoric of "This isn't real country because it's too urban", loved Bro Country down bad!
Gatekeeping black american culture is something I'm passionate about because when THEY take it, it's stripped of it's cultural significance and im so tired of people who hate us taking from us.

Thank you! And he's not even that good. I remember when Chris Rock called him the greatest rapper in 1999 even though he grew up in BROOKLYN in the 80s or as some would say the golden age of hip hop. Should've seen the anti-blackness back then.

Good. Because I had Nigerian coworkers and folks online claiming that they viewed Nigerians differently. Their argument was Bey was ghetto so they would not accept her. Trump brings out the truth in people.
They said Beyoncé wasn't country because she combined r & b with country. Yet, Thomas Rhett and Teddy Swims, a White r & b singer, performed their new duet on the show. It was a soulful country song. They play the song on country radio.
Black people created country music and we deserve to participate in what we created. We let them take rock n roll and certain hairstyles and so much other stuff, where does it stop.
I dunno about sone of this. Reclamation is not about getting White folks’ approval. It about us getting our power back for US. Beyoncé never once tried to play the game with them folks, she knew loud and clear she wasn’t welcome. Beyoncé have been pretty obvious that Cowboy Carter was supposed to be a revenge album against the country music industry and the usage of the Americana imagery was to pissed them off and she accomplished that by being the biggest country album of the year and introducing Black female country singers that had been ignored by the industry.
This❤ I think people often miss the point of Cowboy Carter. The album went number 1, she had a number 1 hit, she rocked Americana and Western fashion, represented American athletes during the Olympics, put out a whiskey, partnered with Levi, and now is the most nominated Grammy artist and most rewarded. She didn't need to kiss the ring, or play the game. Beyoncé won. II Hands II Heaven 🙌🏾
Thank you for this. Justin, and the people like him, think they don't care about whiteness, but the moment they don't get white approval, they are upset and fussing. Beyonce did this album for herself. At this point, everything Beyonce does is for herself. Her fans are going to love it.

Im sorry but its been my experience that many of the African immigrants especially in a professional setting are not seeing it for black Americans and they are not always people to confide in. Ive heard with my own ears African folks talk down on black American people as professionals to white people so.....
“When you come out, BE FULL FORCE. Don’t hold back. Don’t play the game. Say what you wanna say, and get it off your chest. Say it. Because they still gon’ be pissed regardless.” Justin, you ain’t said nothing but a WORD
I'm all for gatekeeping our culture. Too many of us are way too welcoming of them in our culture and act like it's not looting that they're doing. It happens to black american culture the most. No one will take you seriously if u speaking in a fake Asian accent and ur not Asian. It would be considered offensive. But speaking black English is somehow a norm for anyone to speak cuz it's not black it's "pop culture". 🙄
It's sad that you say this, yet don't understand what white folks are doing. Just like black folks are gatekeeping "their" music...is the same reason why Beyonce and Shaboozey didint get awards.
@@757Princesshim only have white people in the music video of the song where he is sampling a famous black hip hop song was a CHOICE! He’d rather be acknowledged by the yts than snub them how they snubbed him.

Luckily Shaboozey still made a fortune off of his music and should keep doing what he loves. They don’t like Beyonce or Lil Nas X either for their contributions to CM. matter of fact MJ is in Nascar now and a lot of them are not happy about it.
Makes so much sense, thank you for sharing your take . Country music is literally the backdrop for racism in America, it fuels a lot of them. The disrespect was so blatant to Shaboozey and Beyonce, I couldn't even watch the clips smh ! 💛💛
Thank you, Justin. This is the first time I’ve truly been able to understand why gate keeping is important. Friends have tried to persuade me before, but I thought they were reverse racists (a concept I’m no longer sure is even possible). You broke this down really well
This is why I cringed when some Black folks kept saying don't use the Pan-African flag in June and pushing the red, white, blue Juneteenth flag as if America is worthy of Black people. 😮 (Mind you, the Juneteenth flag was made by a queerphobic Black man from Boston, not Black folks from Texas who had been using the Pan-African flag for decades.) Anyway, in short, eff them colors and this settler colony project called America.
Nah cause it’s really disgusting how they told Beyoncé to “come hang with us for a while” yet you have shaboozey who did those things and was still paid DUST! Why even kiss their boots if they aren’t gonna acknowledge you or take your seriously, it’s just another power play.
I felt this in my spirit. This is exactly how I feel about country music. And I worry that Shaboozey doesn’t mind being a token black for them saltines. From his video imagery to the few glimpses of who he’s shown us he’s attracted to.
Out of all the Black artists featured on Cowboy Carter, Shaboozey has the most potential to have “mainstream” success. His music is “traditional country music” and his image is the “safe Black man.”
We already knew what was going to happen, THEY just had to do the "find out" part. I lived in Nashville for 4 years and outskirts of Nashville, nobody is getting in the "good 'ol boys" club! They really just tolerate the women. You have to be extra beautiful, extra thin, extra blonde to get those doors as a women so you know anybody with color can just give it a rest!
Country music is honestly my only guilty pleasure. I like light hearted songs about heartbreak and beer, but I know that it will never be for us. Country music has turned into something that seems exclusive for *them**
Yeah, I love rock music! I’ve seen ⚪️ ppl talk about how country concerts have some of the angriest up- tight judgmental people but when it’s rock they don’t even care.. they’re just they’re to have fun. I got into country music this year, still will listen but I’m going to be more careful.
Shaboozeys song is the perfect bar song. ❤❤ i don't watch the Cmas nor the other awards shows. Its never been interesting to me. Ive heard so many embarrassing rituals from those shows.
@jenesishunter9674 I never used the word "keep." It will always be ours by origin. Im speaking about fighting for inclusion into what they have created country music to be. There's no point in doing that. Let them have their good ole boys club. They will never have the successes of some of the top black musicians.
17:12 you would never know I'm a vet talking to me. It's not a source of pride if I thought I had a better option I would have never done it to myself. The trauma associated with it is too much.
Honestly I'm not mad. Shaboozy has NEVERRRRRRR catered to the black community. All his videos are white centered. He's just now coming around us. So idc.
I was in the service also and I understand your feelings. Because my introduction to country music was from my Nigerian father my feelings are different but only certain artists like Dolly Parton and The Chicks. Country music especially associated with the military can be very triggering if you know the history. Also veterans are always overlooked until the politicians need them.

@emjay313 that's my thing with Africans they just ignorantly think that they get a pass on being blk ... are they okay?!
Im sorry but its been my experience that many of the African immigrants especially in a professional setting are not seeing it for black Americans and they are not always people to confide in. Ive heard with my own ears African folks talk down on black American people as professionals to white people so.....
Yes. Out of all nationalities of black people, Nigerians are very good at adapting and playing the game. They are a very intelligent group of people.
“When you come out, BE FULL FORCE. Don’t hold back. Don’t play the game. Say what you wanna say, and get it off your chest. Say it. Because they still gon’ be pissed regardless.” Justin, you ain’t said nothing but a WORD
Speak, Justin 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💛
Justin let me tell you as a Black woman, I definitely HEAR you when a police vehicle is riding behind me… I hate it so much 😭
I'm all for gatekeeping our culture. 🙄
Nothing but facts 💯! I can’t stand when I hear them say “Gen Z lingo” that’s our lingo, stop playing.
It's sad that you say this, yet don't understand what white folks are doing. Just like black folks are gatekeeping "their" music...is the same reason why Beyonce and Shaboozey didint get awards.
Shaboozy isn't the one to put your capes on for ladies. I followed him before he got big.
I was looking for this comment!! He gives me ‘one of those’ vibes
@@757Princesshim only have white people in the music video of the song where he is sampling a famous black hip hop song was a CHOICE! He’d rather be acknowledged by the yts than snub them how they snubbed him.
Right. I used to be a fan. Until I watched his music videos, watched his interviews & observed his behavior. He is whitewashed. He’s not like us
We not about to do that he date black women I know that’s were yall going with this
Oh I already knew this!!!!! Plus I burnt my cape
This was a very powerful video!
One thing I notice is non bp, esp. Wp get upset when bp aren't patriotc enough, however also get triggred to see bp waving the flag. They feel it's only for them.
This!!! 🎯
This country has a deep deep issue with racism and I just don’t think it’ll ever be solved , yt people should just be ignored
I'm so tired of watching talented people be played by all these raggedy games. That's why I appreciate people who create their own lanes and build their own tables.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I understand where you’re coming from completely! Once you see what’s going on, you can’t unsee
Thank you KOR- we understand your passion. we feel it too! Thanks for your commentary on this
My goodness. I’m in tears. Thank you for this
Luckily Shaboozey still made a fortune off of his music and should keep doing what he loves. They don’t like Beyonce or Lil Nas X either for their contributions to CM. matter of fact MJ is in Nascar now and a lot of them are not happy about it.
I’m happy to hear he benefits financially from his music. I hope this is the last year he attends the CMA
MJ?
@@FTYC2022Michael Jordan
@@diamondstar583 ohh is he an owner?
MJ gets what he gets. No sympathy.
You broke this down really well
This made me rejoin Patreon. My budget is super small, but I will find a way.
You betta say that!
Love this, love you, couldn’t agree more. When I see that flag, I see the oppressor.
3:00 Yep same! Confederate flags on people’s trucks on BASE! Ugh.
Now in 2024, it's Trump flags.
I fully AGREE Justin!!! This country is 🗑
I wouldn't say it's trash lol but the tone is ugh
This is why I cringed when some Black folks kept saying don't use the Pan-African flag in June and pushing the red, white, blue Juneteenth flag as if America is worthy of Black people. 😮 (Mind you, the Juneteenth flag was made by a queerphobic Black man from Boston, not Black folks from Texas who had been using the Pan-African flag for decades.)
Anyway, in short, eff them colors and this settler colony project called America.
What I am actually experiencing now in the military. I've seen everything you're talking about. I've experienced it
I completely agree with you on everything and this is why we are trying to gatekeep macaroni and cheese.
P E R I O D!!! Brother you hit the nail on the head with this vlog!!!
Nah cause it’s really disgusting how they told Beyoncé to “come hang with us for a while” yet you have shaboozey who did those things and was still paid DUST!
Why even kiss their boots if they aren’t gonna acknowledge you or take your seriously, it’s just another power play.
he’s speaking real, y’all please thumbs up
You ate this!!
I agree with this video love and thank you so much for your service ❤️🌹🙏
I felt this in my spirit. This is exactly how I feel about country music. And I worry that Shaboozey doesn’t mind being a token black for them saltines. From his video imagery to the few glimpses of who he’s shown us he’s attracted to.
Out of all the Black artists featured on Cowboy Carter, Shaboozey has the most potential to have “mainstream” success. His music is “traditional country music” and his image is the “safe Black man.”
He doesn't. He'll gladly be their Tim Scott just like so many black males.
There’s soooo much I want to add to this but it would be too long, so let me just say, great video Justin and please continue speaking up!!!👏🏿❤️
We already knew what was going to happen, THEY just had to do the "find out" part.
I listen to rock as well but I hate country!! It's basura🚮 @Itscicily
The female country artists are the only ones I can tolerate, and most gay fans gravitate to them anyways. Especially the Reba, Dolly and Shania songs.
You was mad on this one! Lol
Shaboozeys song is the perfect bar song. ❤❤ i don't watch the Cmas nor the other awards shows. Its never been interesting to me. Ive heard so many embarrassing rituals from those shows.
Let them have country music. We have created so many musical styles, and they remain stagnant. They lack creativity.
It’s Not The Colonizers To Keep 😊
@jenesishunter9674 I never used the word "keep." It will always be ours by origin. Im speaking about fighting for inclusion into what they have created country music to be. There's no point in doing that. Let them have their good ole boys club. They will never have the successes of some of the top black musicians.
Baby! I LOVE your passion! “Let me calm down”🤣 I felt that!❤
I really want the Black country girlies and boys to go on tour together.
6:32 PREACH JUSTIN 🙌🏾
I appreciate Justin sharing his experience as a solider . I don’t hear enough of Black soldiers experiences in th military.
That’s Because We’d Rather Forget. 😢
Omg. The mention of heights hit me.
You went off on this. I love it. But I want that pure happiness for you on some other topic.
That army story is so scary. YT people just love exerting their power over others
Edit: YUP
Love the edit !
17:12 you would never know I'm a vet talking to me. It's not a source of pride if I thought I had a better option I would have never done it to myself. The trauma associated with it is too much.
You are speaking in here!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
“Let me calm down” 🤭 but no, turn TF up!! It needs to be said! Period.
Honestly I'm not mad. Shaboozy has NEVERRRRRRR catered to the black community. All his videos are white centered. He's just now coming around us. So idc.
That part
You said a word here 🙌🏾 agree with it all, not surprised at all
I listen to very little country music it is not my thing.
Hi King👋. I am a black veteran and understand completely. Love you much.
Now that was a read....Justin came hard with this one
I was in the service also and I understand your feelings. Because my introduction to country music was from my Nigerian father my feelings are different but only certain artists like Dolly Parton and The Chicks. Country music especially associated with the military can be very triggering if you know the history. Also veterans are always overlooked until the politicians need them.
The ad during this video being about cowboy boots is wild. lol
