    I've always felt buying cut flowers is not practical, you only get to enjoy them for a bit of time and then you throw them away once wilted, now I'll look at them differently...would it still work if I wait until the flower is wilted before I use the stem as cuttings, for those stems without side shoots? Thanks 😊

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад +4

      Thank you very much for your interesting comment. I have only used side shoots from fresh stems. I don’t know whether you could use the stems after the flower has wilted, but if you try it please let me know how you get on. All the best 😀

  • @CintiaVsTia

    I have never used rooting powder, that could be very helpful. In the meantime, can I take off the side shoot and try rooting anyway?

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад +4

      Many thanks for your question. Yes, that might work. You also might try just putting the base of the side shoots into some water and see if they root, I have seen this work previously.

  • @kennethstensrud669
    @kennethstensrud669 3 года назад +1

    Put the cuttings in a propagator, and the success rate will be around 80%, if not even 100%. But not in too hot condition during rooting, and a slight shade is also a good thing.

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for your question. The side shoots that I take for rooting are like little plants growing from the main stem. I hope this helps, best wishes Peter.

      Yes, please! Can we see your blooms? 🌸
      About how long does it take to get your cuttings to bloom? I was thinking of propagating some now but given that it’s the end of August in Chicago and the weather will be turning soon, I’m afraid that there isn’t enough time to get them rooting and thriving. Thoughts?

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад +1

      @@Jamietush1017 Thank you very much for your comment. We moved house recently so I’m afraid I have no blooms to show you, but I’ll try to do a follow up video in the future to show some blooms.
      I reckon it takes about twelve weeks in the summer to grow the cuttings and then for them to bloom so you may struggle at this time of year in Chicago unless you keep them heated. I wish you success, and I would be interested to hear how you get on.

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад

      Thank you for your comment and request. There are quite a few other videos although not about carnations I’m afraid, but hopefully we’ll produce some more next spring. We don’t have a greenhouse in our new home, which makes things tricky, but hopefully will have one early next year.

    Can I know the temperature there sir. I'm staying in hot climate. Is it possible?

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад

      Hello and thank you for your comment. The average temperature I grew these cuttings was about 20 degrees C in the UK. When we lived abroad near the equator we grew plants outside in higher temperatures but needed a lot of water and they did not last long. I haven’t specifically grown carnations in a hot climate, but I think it should be possible if you keep them out of direct sunlight so they are not too hot and well watered. Please let me know how you get on. All the best.

    Can i grow carnations from seed in the summer i live in north africa so the weather is hot

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  2 года назад +1

      Dear Hamza
      Thanks for your question, I’m assuming it is pretty warm where you are. We lived in Malaysia for a number of years and grew various things from seed and they germinated and grew quickly but we’re finished quite fast. Providing you have good seed, I would think you could germinate and grow carnations in North Africa but you will need to make sure you keep them well watered and cool the plants if you can. Good luck and please let me know how you get on, Peter

    I have huge carnation plants who are 3 years old but have never bloomed . Would you tell me how to solve this problem?

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад +2

      Hello and thank you for your question. This is not a problem I have encountered myself, but there are several reasons why your carnations are not flowering. Carnations need about 4 to 6 hours sunlight per day, and too much nitrogen can cause them not to flower so too much fertiliser might be the problem. They may be too old to flower, so taking cuttings such as suggested in our video might be an answer. I hope this is helpful, and wish you success.

    • @كلماتوخواطر-ل6س
      @كلماتوخواطر-ل6س 3 года назад +1

      Thanks a lot but is there any special fertiliser to enhance blooming because they are so huge but have never bloomed while they are exposed to sunlight for about more than 6 hours daily.

    • @karenandpeter
      @karenandpeter  3 года назад

      @@كلماتوخواطر-ل6س Hello, I have had some success in the past with the products produced by Chempak in the UK.
      I believe they produce a low nitrogen feed No.8.
      Please let me know how you get on. Thanks Peter.
