PS5 Slim - Internet Required
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- The PS5 Slim model is causing quite a controversy (not sure why) due to photos of the console showing that an internet connection will be required to pair the new detachable disk drive to the console once before it can be used. There are several reasons this is required and several reasons people are running with their own versions - let's talk about it!

People laugh about this, but all digital fans should be aware that if they somehow lose access to their account they immediately lose access to every single game they ever bought. To those not seeing the issue here, it’s yet another step of big corporations making sure you have as little control over your purchase as possible. Until all we have is the ability to pay 100 bucks for the privilege of streaming a game for 10 hours.
That is the wet dream they are working for.
We're escaping the matrix with this one 😂
I live in a motel with crappy wifi I can't play any online games (Diablo4) I can play games I've already downloaded elsewhere with great wifi but ... but I cannot download without wifi ither. HELP PLS .
Bruh I don't trade or need money digital is fine
You don't understand why it's causing a stir up for requiring internet? It can't be that hard to understand LOL
At this point I'm honestly shocked I dont require an internet connection to go to the bathroom or cook my food
I don't give a shit what is supposed standard.
If I buy a 500$ console with a disc drive and a disc game I should be able to plug it in and play it period
it will be an issue in the future. lets say you need to replace the drive but sony took the authentication servers down, then you cant replace it since the servers are taken down.
i imagine by the time we reach that point (which i assume will be decades down the road), the ps5 will be cracked wide open by hackers so that this requirement can be bypassed
That's exactly what I thought. Lots of people are not thinking ahead. Every product has become throw away. Luxkilly the PS5 has a shit game lineup anyway
The reason why people don't like the internet connection is because it will be required to factory reset the console long after the servers have been turned off. I doubt Sony will release an update to nullify this requirement before they turn off the server. This essentially means any game discs a person has cannot be played should a software glitch happen that requires a reset. My PS5 did this the other month. They will instead be required to try and get a new console with a working drive even though the hardware is fine. On a digital system it's not a big deal but moving this requirement to a physical disc drive is a step too far. It's basically a finger to those who buy game discs so they go digital. When digital is the only way then the competition is gone so the games are worth $60 even 20 years after release. People who say its not an issue love to be controlled.
I just don't see - 1) The PSN being turned off 2) it being a big deal in 2023. My phone, my tablet, my TV, my Xbox, My PC and numerous other devices in my home and office require an internet connection to complete their setup or on initial setup
@@ReforgeGaming 1) The PSN doesn't just turn off. It blocks access to old consoles. There will be a day when Sony call time on PSN for PS3. PSN will still exist 2) PC requiring an internet connection isn't a big deal because you can just replace parts of it should they stop being supported. You can simply buy another PC from any manufacturer - install steam/gog/epic and all your games will pop back up. With the console its only Sony making the PS5 and should you need to buy another because of a minor software glitch you will find that the price has gone up somewhat because those in the wild with their drives enabled will be in short supply. Another manufacturer or even sony cannot simply make a new PS5 like they can a PC. As for the Xbox I won't buy one because of the internet requirement since I can't just replace it for something cheap and play all my games again like I can on PC. If you've got hundreds of games that's $1000s of dollars worth they just switch off when it suits them. Other office devices won't crash and require re setup as much as a PS5 does.
@ReforgeGaming what phone or tablet requires internet the only thing you need to have is Provider you pay the bills for your phone or tablet amd it should work fine without internet it dumb for most all devices to need internet where it not you already paying so much get the devices why should I pay a lot more for the internet to have it on it like buying a car but it doesn't come with wheels and you got to buy it in order to drive it
@@ReforgeGaming Nintendo shuts down every console generation they have had. Who says Sony will not follow in years. You are part of the problem. We will have useless boxes who will not read discs we have bought. To be reliable for internet just dooms games. We have countless examples of them removing games digitaly and that are only available on disc. If we cant acces the discs, that is just stupid.
@@ReforgeGaming Dude you are not thinking of the long term issues of this. A disc drive being connected should NOT need any inernet connection. There is absolutaly ZERO reason for it other than they want to have control over your purchases even more.
Why do you say it is NOT uncommon to require an internet connection to setup a console where ONLY the XBox One and the current generation of XBox have that requirement?
If you don’t know why this is a problem then I’m all set with this video.
What happens when the ps5 servers close down, any new ps5s presumably won't be able to play discs as no way to authenticate the drive? I personally like the idea of being able to replace the disc drive, but never mind that, the next question is over whether the storage is soldered on still or if it's just a replaceable SSD,
I think the storage is soldered on. Longevity is the reason why PlayStation has advantage over PC. Without a disc drive it's just another box which might as well be replaced with a small footprint PC. At least I will get competitive pricing. Once digital only takes hold I don't think I will ever see any game less than $10 no matter its age. 10 year old, 15 year old.. that will be $20-30 digitally. You will have to pay otherwise you've got a brick with no games. PCs have steam, gog, epic etc so tons of competition.
On the slim and the OG model, there's soldered on memory and SSD expansion slot. The OG model has 825GB, whereas the new slim one has 1TB soldered on.
@@gailenrique2804 I get that the memory is soldered to the board and this is a massive longevity issue but it's not as bad as a server going down. Let me explain... People use that as an argument to make the point that the server isn't worth caring about. To that I'd say an SSD going bad only concerns one PlayStation at a time whereas a server will just throw out them all. If my SSD goes bad I just go out and buy a new console. If the server validating the drive goes offline then it becomes hard/expensive to find a console with its disc drive already registered and all those single drives on ebay might as well go to landfill. If you ever factory reset a working console then it becomes fodder for landfill as well since getting it working again (legally) becomes impossible. I hope we get a hack but xbox proved we can't count on that.
As far as old games preservation, I wish the gaming industry would treat ROMs like the music industry started doing with MP3’s in the early 2000s and sell them for a few dollars on a legit store. I really don’t like the idea of having to pay $400 for Skies of Arcadia Legends used copy (even though I got a while back when it was bargain bin price and jrpgs weren’t popular).
It's an added layer of DRM that wasn't there before and Xbox has got a lot of flack about demanding an online connection before you can even use the console. It doesn't have anything with piracy though, at least that doesn't make any sense since you'd have to jailbreak/hack the operating system to even be able to run unsigned code, which if you could do that, the online check wouldn't matter anyway nor would you need a bootleg blue ray drive to run pirated games. Having to burn blue rays would be a pain anyway since the biggest blank discs you can buy is 50GB I believe and Sony use 100GB discs.
Lastly among the most vocal of critics is the preservationist/collectors crowd which stuff like this matters to them and it makes sense because the PS5 servers will be shut down some day or it's wifi technology no longer supported, like the PSP for example. You wouldn't be able to swap your broken disc drive (something Sony has a track record of cheap blue ray drives) with a different one.
The education system has failed more people than i realized 😂
hahah
I only feel bad for those stuck in bad internet areas and cant get the updates for the systems that need online.
i hear that, but the tech world always moves forward
@@ReforgeGaming I agree just sucks that tech moves too fast while the infrastructure does not keep up.
My area is finally getting fiber in 2025, and I don't live in the sticks.
They still get the updates, it just takes longer to install.
@@ReforgeGamingwhy are u defending them taking away offline gaming possibility? Good tech company would made both options available. U dont need internet to watch blueray movies why you need internet to play game from disc? Oh, its because there is no game in the disc anymore, its only a code for your digital game. Lol, make the console all digital then only. Making money from cosmetics is pathetic.
And Its time to other companies take over Asia and South America for example.
It will be the end of Sony Play Station lol
I was actually shocked at the outrage itself, the internet is a major part of everyday life for people in "1st world" countries. IGN knew what they were doing with that headline.
precisely
It is nice to know if something happened to the internet you can still use the 500 dollar thing you paid for plus the games and controllers and hard drives. It’s just another example of not really owning what you buy.
@@Marlboro-lights1exactly this
Why should newer consoles require you have internet when the older consoles don't? Seems like tech is reversing instead of progressing. You should be able to use your console how you want if you paid for it. Offline gaming included.
@@Marlboro-lights1 you can use it if the internet goes out.
Plus if ps bans you lose all your digital copies you bought. So when you bought the game you never owned the game but you're bowering the game.
The bad thing is that you can't play these games 20 years later because if Sony can shut down their online servers.
You are right about privacy though.
Guys please just to understand things right
Let's say I got ps5 slim disc ofc I need internet to paire it in the first time
But let's say after I paired it and I am now offline can I still put the disc and play the game?!
Yes
I have a bad internet connection.
Why are you buying a 500 dollar console, you should probably finance your money better
Get to the point bro, blah blah blah... show us how to fix it
That’s bullshit! It’s not standard practice. Setting up your device to the internet has always been and still is in most cases an option. My iPad, iPhone, QLED, ask if you want to connect to the internet. They don’t force you to. If it was standard all non PS5 slims would have a firmware patch requiring you to go through the same process as the new slim, after the latest patch update. If your console crashes you have to re-register the drive again. I’ve already seen people dropped out of their games and forced to re-register their drive because bugs happen. It might sound strange but truth be told not everyone has internet and not everyone likes connecting their consoles to the internet. I keep all my consoles off line unless I have to patch update a game for dlc that I WANT or if a bug makes the game run poorly before being patched. The fact is it’s nice to have the option. My one x makes me reliant on the internet and I hate it. I wasn’t even able to launch one of my 4K movies that I hadn’t played for a while because of a required system update for my one X. I don’t have that problem with my ps3. You could run movies off that straight out the box and to this day I still use my ps3 from time to time. Even with my ps4 pro, it was a while before I took that online. I hate patches that force you to download big updates that have features you might not even want or features you don’t use and take up unnecessary hardrive space, especially given how little space the PS5 has to begin with. I keep things simple. I keep my ps4 games installed on my PS4 PRO and my PS5 games installed on my PS5 and unless I’m downloading something from PSN I keep my consoles offline and it’s been that way ever since a patch update damaged my very first PS3.
Ever since Microsoft did this with the Xbox one and series x lot of their fan base has dropped off. If you're paying $350 to $ 500 dollars for a console you should have a choice on whether or not you want the internet. THE ONE SIZE FITS ALL MENTALITY works for the powers that be. And AS USUAL disenfranchises the individual. It was old 5 years ago. Just my preference.
FYI, Xbox Series consoles ALWAYS required a log in on first boot.
That's why I stopped buying games for it and moved to PlayStation. It looks like i'll be getting into PC. At least i'll have competitive prices from multiple storefronts instead of only buying from Sony should they decide to ditch the drive.
So if you've bad or no Internet can you set up you ps5 slim with disk drive with your android phone data tethering on set up. Please let me know.. Thanks alot..
Hopefully Sony will release an update that removes the need to connect the internet to pair the disc drive in the future, like they did for the CMOS battery issue.
You gota laugh at the people going full, you just need the drive and the internet to connect to the ps5 a single time,,, the connection is required for formating the drive for your ps5 that's the reason, people need to chill,,, you also need it to set up your xbox,, ps5, nintendo switch,, smart tv,, smart phone,, they are all set up in the same manor, so why are people crying about it well you know who they are lol,,, never go full
Everytime you have a software glitch and require a factory reset the requirement will be present in the initial set up. If it was 1 time for the whole life of that product serial number then i'll agree it's not an issue but I don't think that will be the case.
@Frinsky I agree although if you did need internet to set up a smartphone it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Why? It's simple really. You buy apps for a smartphone like you buy games for a console. The difference is that the smartphone and apps I buy for it are simply tools for life. These constantly evolve and change overtime and generally don't cost that much if anything at all. A kfc loyalty app is just a tool for me to save money on food and its use largely depends on KFC themselves. Games on the other hand do not evolve and change over time. A copy of GTA III is still the same game on PS4 as the one I bought on PS2 back in the early 200s. You could use the argument about HD quality not being on PS2 but at the end of the day its the same product and buying it again for a newer console is just a waste of money to me. I bought that GTA game so I should be able to play it whenever I like as long as I look after my hardware. This server thing just gives companies control to just turn off your access and tell you if you want to play then you must buy the same game again. They don't even do anything to them as well these days. They are just lazy ports.
yes i think the only people in WiFi-accessible countries who have a problem with this are pirates--Jailbreaking requires a low firmware. This hinders people who buy a new PS5, then wait around for an exploit--They'll just have a dead disc drive that whole time. And even if a jailbreak comes out, it might require use of an activated disc drive.
This is stupid. I was about to buy a slim too! Screw that! I'm opting for the regular. No way in hell Sony is gonna force me into some jacked up polygamy with them and the cable guy!
If You Can’t Afford Internet Access Once A Month
You Can’t Afford A $500 Console
I live in a state where if you have state healthcare you can’t get your internet shut off. It’s considered a “human right” so this is perfect for the people who have that. They’ll always have internet access.
Another reminder of why I appreciate these Reforge Rundowns as a source of non-reactionary, reliably sourced, and well-articulated news on gaming. Such a shame how often when an INKLING of a shortcoming or something that may be a slight inconvenience--especially from Sony in particular for some reason--THAT alone is the focus, while disregarding as to why that something may be in place. It's fine to not be on board with whatever decision a company makes, but it's possible to state that disagreement without coming across as an alarmist or being hyperbolic just for clicks, especially if it's something that's rather trivial in the grand scheme of things.
I appreciate that.
I realized u said a couple times “you need internet to setup a PlayStation” no you don’t. Even the new models can be played and setup without internet. Now ur experience won’t be fun but PS and Nintendo are the only consoles that can be played offline consistently
The new models require internet if you have the disc drive for the initial setup.
Indeed. I play my PS5 offline right now. Zero issues. Same with our Switches.
The new one requires internet for setup, however.
@@ReforgeGamingso it’s a one time thing ? After you set it up
You don’t have to be connected to Wi-Fi right
......Why would a Microwave need an internet connection?
there are some wild microwaves out there... set it to turn on and do stuff while you are away from home. just like newer ovens and refrigerators
Where is your t-shirt from? I like the design!
Xbox has done this for years where you cant even play the console itself without internet
That's why I'm no longer interested in anything they have to offer. I moved to PS when that happened so it looks like I'll just move to PC. At least i'll have multiple storefronts so more competitive prices. The console experience literally offers nothing over PC but a disc drive. They take that away and consoles have no reason to even exist.
Let's be honest if I owned a copy word from back in day there is no reason I shouldnt be able to install and use it today with out paying yearly fee second thing thate is no reason a micro wave should have pair to internet / skynet and as for sony they took pepoles movies that that they paid for because sony lost a licence they didnt fix bye way they kist put band aid on it so I wouldnt be so gun hoe to defend sony and them protecting their property they got hacked 3 times show how much they care about their customers info
Not everyone has internet at home, especially in the boonies. Although if that was the case, then how will you update your games if you don't have internet? I don't like it, but if you want to play modern games, you will need some sort of internet connection.
When i first heard this issue the dreamcast issue was first thing I thought of glad you brought it up because we live in a world where we have 2 type identification on everything why would they not verify a port that could be used to infiltrate their system.
yup, poor dreamcast
I guess all the people complaining about needing an internet connection to set up the new PS5 drive still use the default OS on their computer, Xbox or PS right? And do those people also not patch their games?
lol exactly
No is because it will be harder to jailbreak. People are angry they can't buy new console to pirate them.
Does it play has over 1600 games listed on their site. Only 193 are unplayable without patches, so no, not everyone patches every game.
@@airdrighmor1439 Yes pretty much everyone patches their games, since pretty much everyone is connected to the internet, also pretty much every single game sells more digitally than physically, so yes they are patching their games as well. And you think there are tons of people who are on the default out of the box OS for PS5? You dont even know what you are talking about, just like you didnt in chat today.
@@Dave_Langer I think you underestimate how many people in the US have bad internet or data caps. I was speaking solely of games that require patches. The vast majority do not.
The sweeping generalization that most games sell more digitally is also inaccurate. The data simply does not support many of your claims, but the personal insults really help your case. Good day.
This is hilariously stupid and I can't believe people are trying to run with this 😂 great video man keep up the good work
hahah yup
its a preservation issue i still have and enjoy my library ps2 ps3 ps4 and now ps5 i dont want my consoles randomly bricking itself of some stupid snafu
People are using the Internet to cry about needing to use the Internet connection for the pairing of the digital Ps5. Lmao
It's about pairing a physical drive so at that point its not a digital ps5. If you buy the edition with the drive you'll still need to authenticate a drive every time you factory reset. If and when a minor software glitch happens you have to throw out the console should you experience this if the server is no longer available. This PS5 slim is just a smaller version of the standard edition with a planned obsolescence date. Its not like it even has better graphics or anything.
@Frinsky These companies do not care about their customer base. All they want to do is put out bare minimum products to get as much money as they can get away with. You can tell this by how mundane the average AAA title is today. They tell us it's a 100 hour game but most of that is not doing game content it's actually finding useless objects in the map for trophies. The average game is 10-15 hours. Look at Red dead redemption II - If you want the gold medals you cannot die in a mission. Okay that in itself is fine but the mission has to be started from scratch which includes 20 minutes of dialogue/travelling to the fight. There's no way around it - you have to listen to all of that again EVERY time you die otherwise no gold medal. They do this to get the hours up and trick the player into believing since they have wasted countless hours repeating bits that they are getting value for money. What's the solution? used games all the way. This is why they are pushing digital to prevent this and give themselves ultimate control over the prices. I can get RDR2 for $10 on disc used but digital its still $40. A console without a drive has no advantage over a PC. None whatsoever since the digital PS games have DRM like PC but the added privilege of only being able to buy from one place unlike PC.
People out here mad they’re not buying a NES… it’s 2023 there’s probably updates and so on.
yup
Updates is one thing but I don't like being forced out of the box to do it.
Sony up until this point has not required a connection at all to play physical games. Updates are not required (but encouraged) and 100 percent of the game is on the disc. What this now means is that every time you factory reset you need to connect. If the servers are no longer there and you must reset (because of a software glitch - mine did this) then your console and your discs are e-waste as they can't be used.
@@ceasarsalad119does the factory reset issue apply to the fat ps5
If you have a digital version, dont you have the internet? Makes no sense.
yup
They want the connection with people who buy a physical edition too. If you buy it with the disc drive (so a physical edition) it won't be validated in the box and will always require the connection every time you factory reset the thing. If I never had to reset it that's fine but the other day my PS5 glitched and forced me to do it. Without the servers it would have to be be thrown out and replaced.
Just bought a PS5 Slim and ran into this problem because they're replacing the underground lines in my complex, it's been over a year since they started and my condo hoa is stuck in a legal dispute over it, until the matter is settled and the work resumes I either get wireless 5G or us my PS5 Slim as a door stop.
Isn’t it a ONE TIME thing ???
Why is everyone bitching
Coming into this 1 year later ... and I am stunned to hear this guy say "I don't know why" Really? If true, stop pandering for money with this type of content. My 5 year old knows it is for sony to update firmware. Hang it up buddy, you are just another talking head.
Lol okay, turbo
And I'll continue to buy physical games as long as they are an option. I will never trust the servers.
There will be a time when all the digital only users lose ALL THEIR GAMES.
It's going to be EPIC!. Then you pupets will learn the importance of owning something you buy.
People who are against physical dics are just spoiled and lazy. It's good to get off the couch sometimes. Try it.
I pirate all my retro games n consoles n i also own them
It's 2023 DRM is nothing new to us at this point so I don't get the outrage here specifically
This Playstation situation is no big deal to me...but I was very aggravated Xbox put DRM on all my old games with the new backwards compatibility system, I would have like the option to play my old Xbox games from the disc without internet connection.
With this update DRM is new for PlayStation physical releases. I don't get why people don't comprehend this. Prior to this if you held a collection of PS4 discs you could put them in and play them from start to finish without ever requiring a connection to PSN - although updates are encouraged they are not required on PlayStation disc purchases. This adds a barrier to someone being able to use their discs when the servers are down because they won't even be able to factory reset a console without losing their disc drive. Once that happens they have a digital console without games. Even if they did make purchases digitally they would not be able to get those games onto it either without a server but that isn't the issue here because that's obvious. That's why people buy discs in the first place but unfortunately this has negated it.
My playstation is always online what's the difference
same
Without Sony choosing to maintain the server it won't be. People who buy physical know this which is why they collect discs. Bringing this requirement to those people is a step too far. If PS were to only offer digital purchases they can simply charge what they want because you either pay or don't use your console. There will be no used games to contend with so one entity will have full control over prices. If both PCs and consoles contain DRM barriers to enjoyment I might as well go PC and take advantage of competitive pricing from multiple storefronts and make use of the wide range of potable devices available like rog ally, steam deck etc. Its a no brainer to ditch playstation at that point.
I gone all digital now don't buy physical media anymore save space
@@davidpeters1830 That's okay if you make that choice. I suppose when you went into it you decided that you didn't really care about servers going down and losing your games. However people who chose to buy and hold physical media do so because they want to own their games and want the opportunity to replay their games in the distant future should they choose to do so without having to repurchase expensive lazy ports like that of Red dead. They have the disc so there's no reason why it shouldn't still work if they look after their machines and discs. That's also their choice. Online restrictions threaten that because if factory resets do indeed require the server for drive validation (I think they do) then should a minor software glitch happens then they not only have to throw out the consoles but they also cannot play their games unless they manage to find another with the drive already activated.
You need to calm down so work up over it it's going to go all digital in the future better get use to it
Why can’t you guys just wait till they release it to find out what’s really going on? I’m getting tired of this rumor.
It’s not a rumor. It was on the official box.
I’m not sending it a rumor all I’m saying is I saw the same thing on the box all I’m saying is let’s wait till they release the item then let’s get our hand on it then we can figure out what it do most likely they put a Wi-Fi on there, so nobody can buy second party This and put it on there
Me personally I’m going to purchase one I’m gonna buy from Best Buy. I just need to know the date of the release.
I just read an artcle about this that sounded like one of your opening monologues. I even read it with your voice 😂
hahah
Lono as alwaus speaking logically keep the good work!!
Appreciate that
bro cant have it required for wifi, bad consumer practices
Thanks
GOG games don't have DRM, you can buy a game and share it with family and friends if you choose. is that considered pirating games? No internet on connection needed, imo that's game preservation. I think as long as you are not reselling games it fine. Because as we can see today with the norm, devs companies, publishers and Sony don't want game preservation, because they want to charge you for it again whenever the next gen/revised console comes out for 60$. for example, MGS vol 1 ps3 version 60$....smh it plays far better at 4k emulated on PC.
@@mohdamin6641 I get what you are saying but it still stands Sony and Nintendo mostly Xbox to some extent will profit off of reselling games to you behind a monthly subscription model. If these companies cared about game preservation, you the customer would have been able to insert a PS1 disk into your PS5 and play..... but thats not the case ...If it wasnt for PC and being able to create ISO and ROMs for games i own PS1,PS2.PS3 nintendo nes, super nes etc I would have to pay these guys AGAIN WHY?
@@mohdamin6641 Sony own a lot of studios. Naughty Dog, Insomniac etc. Sony owns the IPs of TLOU. Sony is technically a developer/publisher because they bought them out.
In 2023 PlayStation has the edge over PC when it comes to longevity and preservation since their discs contain 100 percent of the product and updates are seldom required. I know gog is an exception but for the most part PC games have DRM. Should PlayStation ditch the disc drive they are in danger of becoming a white elephant since it would make more sense just to buy a PC at that point. You'll get competitive pricing from multiple storefronts and gog is drm free. Sony will only ever allow digital games to be purchased from them so they will have control of the price. There will also be no used games to contend with. Also they have DRM so they offer pretty much nothing over PC at that point when it comes to game store mechanics. The first party titles are great though.
Ahhhh I see ok thanks dude you cleared it up for me everyone keeps saying and what I was picking up was you always need WiFi and if you don’t have it you can’t use it I was watching and reading all these articles and was like if this is true what you guys are saying this just it crazy and this dose not make sense but thank you for clearing this up glad I found your video everyone els trippin
