Just think of how many of these shallow craters on this island have have been filled by small lava flows over the ages. It's always gonna happen sometime, so let no one be hurt (or even inconvenienced) when it does happen. I'm so glad I found this channel! This man does some great work!
Its interesting that the lava shield formation is all quite recent geologically speaking. Are we perhaps in a new lava shield forming phase of Kilauea, or did older ones just get buried?
@@buffalokay A new, underwater eruption site of the hotspot has already formed. I don't remember its name, unfortunately. Hotspots don't move (much) with plates - the plates drift over them.
Now I'm curious whether we ever do surface density scans as part of evaluating the relative risk of different (seemingly) effusive lava fields?? The example here of a filled/filling pit crater may not be of any concern, but what about an actual vent with a crater from either an explosive volcanic eruption or even a maar? If such evidence of past explosiveness of a volcanic field were filled/covered by a later effusive flow from a nearby sill/dike, couldn't that result in a potentially dangerous underestimation in the possible risk level of a volcanic field? Especially if the effused material acted like a plug and allowed even more pressure to build than it took to cause the orginal (now hidden) crater to form in the first place? I understand that individual fields tend to be somewhat consistent in terms of high or low gas magma beneath them, but I would still wonder if fields with old effusive flows might be hiding evidence that there is a higher risk of explosivity in some areas than visual/photographic/topographic data would reveal. 🤔
It's just an update bug, I have been getting it for the past month, off and on. I'm using Android 11 so the updates sometime cause errors in earlier versions like mine. I just close off the RUclips app completely even from my previous app screen and restart it. Sometimes reset my phone.
The most recent one had 3 km (2 miles) of fissures and covered more terrain with lave on its first day than this one in 5 days. But it did not last long.
thanks for the update....10:13 USGS update says the eruption has paused....looking at the latest S2 cam at just before 2pm, not seeing any flow from this distance...
Thank you, lava magma and mother Earth. I appreciate lava! And I appreciate fire ! I appreciate magma! And I appreciate Earth and the Cosmos! Have fun everybody. We will all be soon one with the lava ✌️

thanks for the details and graphics on pit crater formation, now my curiosity is satisfied with graphics too boot!. thank you!
Thank you. Great overview of the eruption and I've learned something new with how the old pit crater was formed. Never knew that could happen!
Thanks as always, Geology Hub!
I always love it when the video lengths on this channel hit 4:20.
We can always depend on you for the best, most in depth info on eruptions. Thanks so much.
Thanks for all the hard work on these videos!
Why are we lava-shaming?
😂😂😂
Why are you advocating for lava?

Aren’t all lavas equal?
Lava rights!
I love watching volcanoes on your channel and am happy I don’t live close to one 🎉
Ain’t that the truth!
Love your coverage ❤
Thank you for the information

They probably got worn away by the action of the ocean
The plume that feeds Kilauea is constantly moving with the plates. Eventually, it’ll slide right on by and possibly create a new island eventually.

I see this as basaltic irony. A lava fall INTO a volcanic crater.
Great report!
Thanks.
Thank you. I was wondering how that crater formed.
Spectacular!
It's still pretty cool though!

I've never considered the possibility of rainbows appearing near volcanic eruptions.
There is a lot of water vapor in the gases of volcanoes, that's why.
And literally just after posting this the eruption ceased from the USGS. D:
Hello, received a video by Big Island Video News that the eruption is reported at paused.
Is there video of the fissure eruption that eventually formed Pu'u O'o?
I am in Hilo and the screen is blacked out. If I fast forward I can see it go by. Would RUclips black thus out locally for some reason
I'm in Pahoa town and the whole video played for me🤙🏼🌴🌋
Probably a bug in youtube software. It's happened to me on occasion, too, but not on this video.

I've often wondered about things like lava tubes. Have you done anything on them?
How does this compare to icelands most recent eruption in size?

I always try to picture dinosaurs and tropical trees when I see these videos.
Thanks for this little gem! I can’t stop not seeing them now ^_^

Hmm, what’s the tonnage of greenhouse gases that are released by the many active volcanoes on are planet?
Tired of hearing about rifts in the Middle East…
Give peace a chance people!
What is it with Kilauea and rainbow eruptions?!
Water
I think Kilauea just likes to accessorize :)
