They always say some shit like "oh yeah I listened to this, is a 3/10 btw" and then fantano says some positive things abt it and it's like "💯💯MASTERPIECE, HOLY SHIT"
Everybody in chat before the song ended and fantano said he liked it: way too long, wtf are these drums, skip this, 1/10 face it. Everybody in chat after the song ended and fantano said he liked it: 10/10, just give the album a 10 already, that was amazing, play it again.
People mentioning the ‘intro’ in the track is too long when its not an intro its just the song itself, its like saying the intro on a godspeed you track is too long when the whole point of the track is a slow buildup
I realise this was Fantano's least favourite track because of the mixing decision. But for me, that production choice was what made this one of the best songs on the entire album. The fact the drums violently break out of the rest of the pretty orchestration is what helps the song really build up to its conclusion. Nearing the end of the album, it's the first moment the musical composition becomes completely chaotic - as if the character is finally losing what mental stability he had left.
also the moment drums stop the song has this empty feeling to it that is really highlighted by the violin. its like a calm after the storm and i love it
I love how the repeating guitar carries the rhythm (as opposed to typically drums) and it allows the drums to take center stage with its crazy building, much like the metaphorical snowstorm in the song.
First listen and the drums for being so free fit so well its insane. Also the kit sounds amazing!! As a drummer, this could have easily come off as wanking or showy but it came off as angsty, emotional and locked in with the vocals as one. Good shit god damn.

Another comparison coming to mind is Silver Mt Zion (but I think that's just Godspeed 2.0)

i swear when i first listened to this i thought i accidentally put a gybe song on queue. I dont mind the long intro that much imo. And just like a gybe sogm, the build up is worth it. This song is so magical, I love it.
Just finished listening to the whole album, and gotta say on first listen, this is probably one of my least favourites on the album. I think this entire album is going to be a grower, which is interesting because I loved the entirety of For The First Time pretty much from the first listen. Edit: It clicked for me. God I love this fucking album.
It clicked with me on my second listen. It’s definitely a more accessible, straightforward direct. However, I don’t think the group loses their idiosyncrasies by refining their sound doing this. I would say this feels more focused and tailored for the band specifically. It might be a grower for you, but I definitely prefer this to the debut.
I'm not a fantano stan. But what makes this song so good? Like music theory wise? bc it seemed like sensory overload for no reason and the singing was really annoying
Well, appreciation for any given singing voice is going to be largely subjective. Some people think Jeff Mangum's voiced is filled with emotion, others think he just sounds whiny. In Isaac's case, he's technically perfectly competent, being able to sing clearly and effectively at different volumes, but what most fans like is the emotion behind it. Of course if it isn't your thing then it isn't your thing. As for the instrumentation, it isn't an overload for no reason. Consider the act of shaking a snow globe. You start at a point of lowest energy, where everything is settled. Then it's shaken, reaching a point of highest energy where the snow is flying everywhere. Then as it settles it returns to the same point of lowest energy it started at. This is what the song recreates, by starting with a single guitar (the point of lowest energy), transitioning into the the drums performing a free jazz esque improvisation(the point of highest energy) and then returning to the original guitar line (the same point of lowest energy). Further, the drums are so high in the mix to purposefully drown out the vocals, even once Isaac starts screaming. The song deals with ideas of futility, much like screaming into a blizzard. Also consider that Anthony is always on the lookout for song using interesting music ideas, and the idea of having the normally melodic instruments perform the role of percussion and harmony while the drums are the ones that perform the melodic element is an interesting idea he was bound to appreciate. TLDR: As a means of putting a symbolism ladden concept into practice purely through the use of music, this song achieves that to the best degree possible. Another song that comes immediately to mind that does the same thing is Heroine by the Velvet Underground, though you can find a lot of great artists doing stuff along these lines.
