How Pakistani F-16s Shot Down Russian Vice President
HTML-код

- During the Soviet military involvement in Afghanistan, their aircraft would sometimes attack Mujahideen bases in Pakistani territory. Initially, Pakistan couldn't prevent those intrusions because it lacked modern fighter aircraft. But they managed to convince USA to sell them F-16, a state of the art fighter airplane. First results came in 1986. when F-16s shot down two Su-22s of Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The first Soviet aircraft would be confirmed shot down in August 1988. And the victim was none other than a future vice-president of Russia, Alexander Rutskoy. That wasn't his first shootdown in the war either. This video tells both stories.

The US had offered Pakistan 3 fighters in the 1980 deal. Namely:

-A10 thunderbolt (yes Pakistan could've been the first foreign buyer of the warthog)
But the Pakistani government decided to persuade the US into selling them the Viper/Falcon.

Good video. 1) Rules of engagement was that the pilot was only cleared to shoot if the wreckage was to stay inside Pakistan borders. 2) I was a GD rep with the PAF from 85 to 88 and had met most of the players during this time. 3) The F-16 lost during this time was a Kamra aircraft that was a blue-on-blue event (knew both pilots).

I remember reading some where that Pakistan Air Force actually shot down many Soviet Aircrafts during Soviet-Afghan war in dogfights on Pakistan-Afghanistan border and that was actually surprising for me...
Pakistan claims quite a lot of aircraft shot down during the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan. Most of them actually belonged to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan but some were Soviet too. Russians don't admit all of those losses but Rutskoy is one case that they confirm.
Pakistan is the first country in the world which shot down multiple Soviet Aircraft which infact is the first ever kills of F 16 vapor and proves the worthiness of F16.

Very interesting, the Fencers were possibly a diversion. If there were Floggers as cover the F-16s could have been in trouble due to them being equipped with medium range R-23 missiles, Pakistani F-16s only had sidewinders.

Fantastic video and interesting story! Your historical commentary videos are such a great idea.
(BTW: I'm surprised there is so many "fictional" mods like F-22, Rafale, Su-57 having nothing in common with their real counterparts, but there is no i.e. F-16A to portray proper fighters for video like this one.)
Thanks! As for the airplanes you mention, they are just mods and I believe that most details about them are just guesses by their authors because they can't possibly access the right information. And making the A version of F-16 would take lots of effort to do it properly. I listened to several interviews with module developers, making a different version of an airplane is nearly like developing another module. Financial effect from developing F-16A would be questionable. Heatblur is an exception here, they developed F-14B first and then F-14A but it was free for the module owners.
Its way harder to mod the F16 or other full fidelity mods than the FC3 aircraft. All these mods with little exception are all based on FC3 aircraft.
Supply and demand :)
Can you imagine the first Russian pilot to see they had F-16s. Every time they go out after that they would think that is it. F-16s are amazing they can do just about anything from close air support. Flip a switch and you can take care of anything in the air as well.

Any airforce can shoot down Soviet aircraft with an F16. Its has a 78 to 0 record. Ukrainians downed 2 Russian top of the line fighters in the last 3 months with barely any experience on F16s. Both are confirmed by the Russians. PAF is the only airforce operating F16s that actually shot down its own F16 in May 1987.
*Well done video production. I sure like it, good job!!!*
Thanks a lot for your support!
I am curious as to why the Soviet Air Force did not provide some sort of fighter escort for the Su-25s, since there was already a history of the Pakistani Air Force reacting strongly to Soviet air incursions? It seems like the Su-25 is analogous to the U.S.A.F.'s A-10 Warthog, which does not appear to have been designed with air combat in mind - were the Soviets NOT providing escorts, in an attempt to prevent an escalation of hostilities with Islamabad?
It seems that some MiG-23s might have been there. A Russian viewer commented on that here (in Russian language but GT will translate it well enough). Supposedly, they didn't shoot for political reasons. Attacking Mujahideen camps across the border was considered acceptable, but apparently shooting down a Pakistani jet in Pakistani airspace was too much.
Being nice never pays off I guess.
