I would like to point out to newer players that you don't have to remember ALL of these in order to be good at smash, professional players only use a few of these of these depending on the character they are playing. However it is good to know a good handful of these so you can better adapt to your opponent's playstyle or to even mix up your attack patterns to confuse your enemy and to catch them off guard. None of these techniques shine more then others as each have their various uses and prove to be more useful to different players depending on their character, and the playstyle they like to use! It's up to you to find which of these techniques best suits you!
^ what he said. I got pretty overwhelmed when watching this. I started to quit before I even started. I’ve been playing smash forever casually with friends. Had no idea about the depth of this game.

Yeah true! I've played smash for along time and didn't really know alot of strategies. I'm good at marth but I really want to main shulk since I love xenoblade and the Xeno series.
yeah I mean... I never got the chance to own any of the previous systems with a ssb game series... and if I played it was casually with some friends... but now that I own a switch I really want to give this game the time it desserves and be really good at it... and since this is a fresh start for me (and I'm not afraid to say it) I will be using the nintendo switch pro controller... and maybe with some time i will choose the mos apropiate controller to use
Your videos are amazing Izaw. Smash 4 has been out for almost two years now and I think these will be of great help to new players. I've been playing since the start and I've still learned a lot! I look forward to seeing the expert and master levels.
Wow its good to see someone really tackle the "how do i get good" question in depth like this. The next thing i want to see from any of the smash 4 youtubers is "when to roll and when not to roll" Subscribed.
Great guide! I definitely realized I was confused as to how to execute certain things before from reading people's guides and doing them wrong but you really cleared some of that up.
I've been in the competitive smash scene for a little over a year now and I realize that I rarely do some of these. Thanks Izaw! (btw as a link main I think you are the best in the world)
I played Melee when I was a child, now I'm coming back to play Ultimate. I never used C-stick on Melee, but looks like it is a skill that I have to learn. But I'm having a hard time figuring it out, because I saw some people discussing about if it's better having C-stick configured as "attack" or "smash". I want to practice C-Stick right away, since the game is realeasing tonight, but I don't know exactly how to do it. What are the right moments to practice C-Stick and when should I just use A button?
Long time fan. Keep up the great content man. Very simple breakdown. This video was helpful for my friends who couldn't keep up or got frustrated with me trying to teach or explain. Well done. Can't wait for expert and more vids for us higher education smash players.
I probably haven't looked hard enough, but this is the first time I've seen a video that actually explains how to do shield dashing. Thank you SO much for this, as it's proven extremely helpful thus far.
Never hurts to brush up on the many different techniques whenever you feel lost. Gotta' work on my input buffering, reverse aerial rushing, and perfect pivoting. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making these guides. I think i may play these on my phone while practicing the techniques. I've been wanting to get into competitive smash but i've never been good enough. Thank you so much! You, sir, have gained a sub
Izaw, I see in the description that it says to contact you on discord if you need a coach/teacher. I feel like I do because I've been playing Sm4sh for a while and haven't really improved to the skill level that some of my friends are or people I see online. I tried to contact you on Discord but I don't know how :( Please help!
Izaw said in a previous video that he was working on a Art of Roy, so this isn't much of a spoiler. I guess it spoils that it MIGHT be released soon but if you follow his twitter you can see on there that it is close to being released.
I did wave bouncing in slow motion and i figured out that how it it works is right when you press special you have maybe 3 frames to change direction and when you change direction the momentum comes with you causing the "bounce". i was using mario im not sure if its different with others
The pivot grab is actually dash -> grab -> turnaround It's a small detail that can help execute the move more easily Speaking of small details, there's an unfortunate amount of missed information, is there a link or document that has content going deeper into these techniques?
So for practicing using my c-stick and buffering aerials, I have to jump with x and perform aerials with my c-stick but at the same time moving my thumb fast enough so it buffers?
Walter Puff YES! I use it as a mix up in recovering and in neutral. I'll either fly over or stop right in front of you, then follow up with a down tilt or pivot f-tilt. if the tilts hits shield, I'm good cause it's positive! Ike is GREAT.
Jasper Walker same - although i don't use it as much as i probably should. i didn't know you could b-reverse side-b until this video - hopting i can integrate it into my gameplay.
I wonder. Was an up smash happening when you were already holding up without tapping it, but via pressing jump and attack too quickly, even intended, or is it like how grabs are internally shield + attack and sometimes get turned into attacks during pivots and when crouching?
So is x jumping completely necessary to be good at smash? I mean it’s useful at times having tap jump off, so it’s easier to perform up tilts and such, but I feel like I move more easily with tap jump and I’ve just recently learned after watching your videos that x jumping is actually useful. Of course, I will still use x to help with my buffered aerials and out of shield options, but I still want to use tap jump, as it’s how I’ve played since I started brawl. To be honest, I don’t have a GameCube controller, so I don’t know how much easier movement with x jump is on that, and I’m planning on getting one soon anyways. So should keep practicing x jump or can I tap jump when necessary? Also how does a GameCube controller affect ones gameplay?
I'm a bit confused about shield dashing and cancelling (6:08). The video says there will be stun if my shield gets hit (6:53), but other parts of the video show otherwise. Is that because the shield dash and cancel is performed with a perfect shield as opposed to holding the shield button?
It works fine, it just may change the difficulty of what you're trying to do. For instance I think upb out of shield is easier for you but utilt may be harder. Buffering still works the same.
Technically speaking, you can jump cancel with tap jump, but i think it's Izaw's personal preference. As far as buffering, I don't know since I'm not really good at buffering. What's nice about tap jump though is that you can up b and up smash out of shield super easily, since it's generally a five frame window to input the special/attack button.
Jump canceling is quite easy with tap to jump, all you have to do is hold up then instantly press A or B depending on if you want to do an up smash or up special. As for buffering aerials, all you have to do is hold the left stick up and move the c stick in the direction corresponding to the aerial you want.
Give it up, the tap jump will stop you from being realistically able to do up tilts. It also makes it so if you decide to do an up air you'll waste your second jump which can really mess you up. I know it's not an easy transition but it's necessary
After watching these first two Art of Smash videos, I can't help but feel like you left out a step. "Step 0: Get a gamecube controler." Because all your descritions of how to do...everything are GC controler specific. Maybe not a big deal for the upcoming Expert and Master videos.... but for Basic? Yeah, might be a problem for kids in that 10 to 13 starting-to-get-serious-about-this range, who might not have anyone in their family who owned a Gamecube, or any previous Nintendo console. ...that went a little heavier than I intended. Basically, I think the first video, and maybe even this one, shouldn't have been so controler specific, since they're for people just learning the game. Otherwise, great video! Very informative.
WELL thank you, I'm impressed by the quality of your advices, I'm also impressed because I already did a thing, the "run-turn and jump" And also I have a question: I have a original gamecube controller, is there a difference between original controller and special smash controller or I can try to practice with my original one ?
I'd love to be taught a bit more about the advanced fundamentals of SSB, I've had a lot of crap from a large number of players for dumb reasons and would love to 'beat the bullies' as such, as I want to prove that these communities don't have to be bashed for mean players and elitism. I'm not a terrible player, not a great one (topped a couple of locals, but thats all), but the way myself and others have been treated by members of these communities shouldn't speak volumes for the communities themselves. You don't have to be a dick to be good, basically. If you can help me prove this, I'll be forever in your debt...

If I could afford it right now, I would my friend, but alas, I'm waiting on my new job to start, I may well hit you up in the future though. Being in the UK, time difference can be a bitch though :P
@@Trails3rdFanboy you will know otherwise when you have plenty of money, but not much time left to live. also money is measured by time. first question, what is your desired salary per month or year and not measured by how much you already have. if you were poor youd desire eed more than if you were rich. if you want to get rich you got to start thinking of your time as valuable
why isn't part 1 of this series listed anywhere in the description or the end thumbnails? i wanted to send this series to a friend that's starting to smash
i subbed just of how helpful this is thanks dude! im watching these so that i have a decent idea of how to play it because im getting the switch version soon!
Wouldn't it be easier to do Nair with the A button? Going diagonally on the C stick can sometimes make Up, down and forward/back air come out. Which is better?
8:03 - Well, I already use C-Stick for Attack, so I'm good for Step 1. Step 2, I do also Shield Dash, so I think I'm on the clear there, as well as pivoting into Smashes/Grabs. Step 3, not sure that I can do this one, cause I use Tap Jump so Up-Smashing out of shield seems a bit hard... Dunno, I'll try to practice it. Step 4, already do buffer my aerials. A lot, may I add. Step 5, I sometimes do RARs so I think I'm okay? I don't use any characters with projectiles so I dunno. Step 6, I personally don't feel B-Reversing is a must but okay. Guess I'll try to do it more.
Izaw, I know you're busy making these guides, plus the planned ones for other characters, but since I don't have Amino, I just gotta ask...will you ever make a guide for Wario? He's a character I and many others would love to improve with, but there aren't any really good video guides...
wait wait woah, why would i use my c-stick for aerials, that means moving my hand off other buttons and therefore, somewhat limiting reaction time and accuracy in my specials, or a double jump. Since all of my other friends agree, what benefits do you receive that is worth moving my hand across the controller?
I’m honestly a little lost. I didn’t know smash was this intense. I just looked up guides so I stop losing to one of my friends. I’ve been playing smash casually with my friends since I was in middle school. I’m 27 now. Is it too late for me to get Gud?
Thank you for these tips I literally knew none of this and ive been playing for 6 months. i realized I theres a limit to how good I could be if I didn't know proper smash skills.
Huh... so maybe here's another part of he equation for why I suck. I've only mastered around half of these... I'm going to uh... go check beginner, too... just in case I've... missed anything else...
It appears some characters are not capable of the turn around special; I tested it with Link, so I know it's possible... Captain Falcon (he just turns around) Donkey Kong (no noticeable effect) Ganondorf (he just turns around) Jigglypuff (just changes direction) Little Mac (no noticeable effect) Meta Knight (doesn't seem necessary anyway) Pac-Man (no noticeable effect) Samus (no noticeable effect) Shulk (no noticeable effect) Sonic (no noticeable effect)
Just found these videos now but they're amazing! I don't play often but I love watching people play and I want to know exactly what's going on so I can join in the fun!
that's what bothers me though, the gamecube controller is so overpowered compared to any console controller that they'd put out to the point where you're at a disadvantage just for not owning one.
+IzawSmash Thank you. I see now that you have to press grab and turn at the same time, where for a tilt, you have to turn, then wait some time before tilting. Much easier now.
How do you train your link cuz I'm a link main I don't fell like I'm improbing, and I get bodied by fast characters like fox, marth and diddy 😭😭 (question also for other good link mains)
Nice video! Learned about jump cancel reversed up smash which is great for my Mario. If you got time can you put time stamps in the description or something? It would be pretty useful for people like me who want to go back to these videos to see specific points again. Thanks for the video! :D
Izaw, am I not able to do some of these techniques if I use tilt jump? I've tried all of them, and jump canceling and buffering a short hop up air with fox seems near impossible, any advice?
I don't understand the point of jump cancelling out of shield to use attacks when you can just use the attack directly out of shield. I'm getting the same results between when I Shield Dash -> Jump Cancel -> Up-Special and when I just Shield Dash -> Up-Special
I play Smash for about 10 years and Smash 4 since its release and I didn't know all of that! And... are all those technics possible on 3DS? I don't have a Wii U... ^^'
Hey Izaw, I watched the video but I already know all these terms, and I still do mediocre at my locals. I'm hoping to learn more in Expert because I still can't point out the difference between top level players and low level players at my locals. Is it mix up options? Is it watching their opponent? Is it taking notes on their opponent before the match? Or is it possibly how well someone adapts? Hope to see some of these questions answered in the next video
Izaw. I'm still trying to pull of that small leap from hanging off the edge of the stage into a down air that I see u do in a lot of ur montages. how do u do it?
For some reason I find pivot tilt really hard. I push the analog stick to far after the dash, and end up doing a pivot smash (?) or a pivot dash attack (?). Is the only way to get a pivot tilt consistent to practice it over and over again until you have the muscle memory, or is there an easy solution?
Is it best then to for sure use y or x to jump and not the joystick? I am not super great at this game yet but want to learn. I currently use joystick up to jump should I start learning how to jump with y or x instead?
hey is there a way to run off the stage but change direction at the same time? (e.g. run off left side of stage, press left+A to perform a back-air) I was practicing in training mode and I think I did something like that.
Solid information right here. Been practising with new controls (though with the 3DS which SUCKS ASS *compared to the WiiU's controller options.*) I totally missed the part about the difference between the pivot-tilt and pivot-grab thing. Seems I get the best luck trying to go for a pivot-grab when I hit grab at the same time as I pivot. The higher stuff, welp, I guess I'm shit outta luck until I can get some time in on the WiiU version. The controls there are WAY better than the 3DS version. Going to be referencing this vid heavily while I git gud. Totally looking forward to the rest of this series. Take your time tho, I'm not in a rush (and if you rush the next vid it might not be as solid as these two.)
um i have a question. i rty to use c stick but what finger do you even use? i use y for jump so using the c stick instead of just going over to a from y is very difficult
what if where using the 2ds?? is the c-stick attack? I'm so curious and it's really hard to attack and do movements on 2ds and 3ds I wish I had a wii u but I can't afford it

I do training sessions for 25$ per hour, and voice chat with you as I tutor you and teach you anything you want to learn. You can buy 1 hour and see if you want to continue :)! If I could afford it right now, I would my friend, but alas, I'm waiting on my new job to start, I may well hit you up in the future though. Being in the UK, time difference can be a bitch though :P
from the videos he sounds like an excellent teacher. No reason he should do it free when time is the most valuable thing we have in life
@@drowningin its money that is the most valuable.
@@Trails3rdFanboy you will know otherwise when you have plenty of money, but not much time left to live. also money is measured by time. first question, what is your desired salary per month or year and not measured by how much you already have. if you were poor youd desire
eed more than if you were rich. if you want to get rich you got to start thinking of your time as valuable
why isn't part 1 of this series listed anywhere in the description or the end thumbnails? i wanted to send this series to a friend that's starting to smash
i subbed just of how helpful this is thanks dude!
im watching these so that i have a decent idea of how to play it because im getting the switch version soon!
Wouldn't it be easier to do Nair with the A button? Going diagonally on the C stick can sometimes make Up, down and forward/back air come out. Which is better?
+MonsterBoyAP ~ MBAP Does it help in tournament play to learn?
When a fan makes better tutorials than the creators...
Keep up the good work!
Izaw, I know you're busy making these guides, plus the planned ones for other characters, but since I don't have Amino, I just gotta ask...will you ever make a guide for Wario? He's a character I and many others would love to improve with, but there aren't any really good video guides...
I've got a question concerning actions after dashing: Can you buffer Shields or Pivot grabs during the dash animation?
wait wait woah, why would i use my c-stick for aerials, that means moving my hand off other buttons and therefore, somewhat limiting reaction time and accuracy in my specials, or a double jump.
This is really helpful. At first it was unnatural to not use the control stick to jump but using L will help with the transition
i really like this video it has dramatically improved my smash 4 tech skill thanks!
Thank you for these tips I literally knew none of this and ive been playing for 6 months. i realized I theres a limit to how good I could be if I didn't know proper smash skills.
Feels good to know i did most of this before the vid came out and it wasnt like, perfect pivot stuff
Huh... so maybe here's another part of he equation for why I suck. I've only mastered around half of these... I'm going to uh... go check beginner, too... just in case I've... missed anything else...
It appears some characters are not capable of the turn around special; I tested it with Link, so I know it's possible...
Captain Falcon (he just turns around)
Donkey Kong (no noticeable effect)
Ganondorf (he just turns around)
Jigglypuff (just changes direction)
Little Mac (no noticeable effect)
Meta Knight (doesn't seem necessary anyway)
Pac-Man (no noticeable effect)
Samus (no noticeable effect)
Shulk (no noticeable effect)
Sonic (no noticeable effect)
I always use the c stick for tilts and aerials except for SH buffered fair, nair, bair and dair.
Just found these videos now but they're amazing! I don't play often but I love watching people play and I want to know exactly what's going on so I can join in the fun!
Can the tips work on super smash bros 3DS
double sticking is optimal if you want to buffer something...using the x or y or what have is good for doing everything else
claw grip =D
+JamJamSlam yup
that though, is how you easily contract m2k hand syndrome. Offering your hands to fox will also accelerate this process.
that's what bothers me though, the gamecube controller is so overpowered compared to any console controller that they'd put out to the point where you're at a disadvantage just for not owning one.
Doringo I use the pro controller for Bidou, and it's just as overpowered as the GCC. If not more so, since it has one more shoulder button.
I can constantly do a pivot tilt, but sometimes when trying to do a pivot grab, I do a pivot tilt. I get the grab around 50%. Any tips?
thats because you do a pivotgrab too slowly, you need to pivot and grab almost at the same time, if ur too slow it'll be a tilt instead
+IzawSmash Thank you. I see now that you have to press grab and turn at the same time, where for a tilt, you have to turn, then wait some time before tilting. Much easier now.
IzawSmash How do u jump cancel with up specials do I have to change any buttons on my controller to do it and how do you do it out of shield.
How do you train your link cuz I'm a link main I don't fell like I'm improbing, and I get bodied by fast characters like fox, marth and diddy 😭😭 (question also for other good link mains)
This video is got to be the best video guide that I ever sern
These are some nice tips but, I play on a 3DS so I don't have a c-stick... any recommendations for that?
that Art Of Roy hype is growing after seeing this video
Nice video! Learned about jump cancel reversed up smash which is great for my Mario. If you got time can you put time stamps in the description or something? It would be pretty useful for people like me who want to go back to these videos to see specific points again. Thanks for the video! :D
This was helpful.I can't wait to practice this in Smash Ultimate
Instant Dash Attacks in Ultimate use C-stick in the same direction as dash, so IDA right = L-stick right + C-stick right :)
Izaw, am I not able to do some of these techniques if I use tilt jump? I've tried all of them, and jump canceling and buffering a short hop up air with fox seems near impossible, any advice?
I have idea if you press the attack and special button at the same time tou can smash attack this could be used so 3ds players can perfect pivot smash
1:01 Marth is that you?
Night Bot Imagine Marth could do that in Melee, his grab would cover 5 billion light years!
I don't understand the point of jump cancelling out of shield to use attacks when you can just use the attack directly out of shield. I'm getting the same results between when I Shield Dash -> Jump Cancel -> Up-Special and when I just Shield Dash -> Up-Special
Its a bit slower ,when you just u p.
I play Smash for about 10 years and Smash 4 since its release and I didn't know all of that! And... are all those technics possible on 3DS? I don't have a Wii U... ^^'
I know this video is ancient in internet time, but how would these techniques work with other types of controllers such as Wii motes?
Izaw Can you still do buffering and jump cancel if you use the analog stick for jump instead of a button?
I wonder which stuff gets into the Master and which to the Expert video
NOW I realize how those people made their characters move faster than they should.
I recently started incorporating reverse b and this video pops up on my birthday.
I don't know how to feel about this. I'm conflicted.
This is an amazing series!
Hey, 3DS player, over here... No C-stick for me, and I only have one circle pad.
What would I do about the C-stick techniques?
Hey Izaw, I watched the video but I already know all these terms, and I still do mediocre at my locals. I'm hoping to learn more in Expert because I still can't point out the difference between top level players and low level players at my locals. Is it mix up options? Is it watching their opponent? Is it taking notes on their opponent before the match? Or is it possibly how well someone adapts? Hope to see some of these questions answered in the next video
I'll be covering that in "Masters"
Awesome, thank you
Izaw. I'm still trying to pull of that small leap from hanging off the edge of the stage into a down air that I see u do in a lot of ur montages. how do u do it?
You are helping me a lot, keep that good work
do you think you will every do another art of sheik now that she has been affected by recent patches?
I can't pivot grab. Each time I try it does an attack rather than a grab, I tried both Z and Shield+Attack.
Until I get a Wii-U, this all still applies to the 3DS version barring cstick stuff right? Because you can't change the cstick settings sadly.
If you're playing on a 3DS is it still better to use the *C-Stick* for aerials?
is a game cube controller recommened for plaything this game ? does a right analog stick on a pro controller act like the C Stick?
Solid information right here. Been practising with new controls (though with the 3DS which SUCKS ASS *compared to the WiiU's controller options.*)
I totally missed the part about the difference between the pivot-tilt and pivot-grab thing.
The Zelda animations at the start is so dope.
um i have a question. i rty to use c stick but what finger do you even use? i use y for jump so using the c stick instead of just going over to a from y is very difficult
what if where using the 2ds??
is the c-stick attack? I'm so curious and it's really hard to attack and do movements on 2ds and 3ds I wish I had a wii u but I can't afford it
@Izaw, how do you jump cancel an up smash if ur upsmashing with the c-stick?
what is the c stick equivalent on the Wii remote and nun-chuck cause that's what I use
