  • Howard Hewett of legendary R&B group Shalamar, before embarking on a solo career, sits down for a full in depth IG live interview with DJ JScratch of Old School 104.7 KQIE FM Radio. Howard Hewett talks with DJ JScratch about the encouragement his mother gave him to explore his God given talent as a singer at the age of ten by pushing him out front to sing lead in their family group "The Hewett Singers". Furthermore, he discusses how growing up in Akron, Ohio was an ideal place to explore the foundation of his music, how he later joined the Air Force and briefly attended college before moving to Los Angeles with only thirty-four dollars in his pocket at the age of twenty. Then after helping form a singing group called "Beverly Hills" that took him overseas, he later joined the group "Shalamar" after receiving a call from Jeffrey Daniel. Moreover, Howard mentions how Michael Jackson used to attend the "Shalamar" shows at Disney Land, where Jeffrey Daniel taught Michael how to do the moon walk. In addition, Howard discusses how he sang the background with James Ingram for Michael Jackson's song "P.Y.T.". He also sang the background for Carl Carlton's "She's A Bad Mama Jama" song along with James Ingram and Phil Perry. The singer then recalls a time when he lost his voice during a concert. He explains that even when things don't work out according to plan, the show must carry on. Next, Howard shares how he kept his word to the Lord by honoring him by recording the song "Say Amen", how he was in the process of working on a new musical collaboration with singer Teena Marie just weeks before she passed away, and explains what inspired him to apologize to singer Jody Watley after forty years and more on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
As well as his solo songs "Show Me," "Once, Twice, Three Times," "I'm For Real," "Strange Relationship," "Stay," "Crystal Clear," and "Say Amen," Howard Hewett is also known for his Shalamar songs "A Night To Remember," "This Is For The Lover In You," "The Second Time Around," "Dead Giveaway," "Right In The Socket," "Make That Move," "Over And Over," and "Dancing In The Sheets," countless others.

This was a wonderful interview. I grew up listening to both Howard and Shalamar since I was a child in the 80's. Thank you for sharing this.

Howard needs a showcase moment like the one given to Chante Moore on the BET Awards.
