That is exactly the way to pump it. Many ppl complain that the pump is easy to break but if you hold it they way you are doing it , it will last forever. Thx for the review.
Excellent review of an excellent product! I own 2 of these filters for backpacking and both have worked flawlessly from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to Isle Royale National Park to, most recently, the Manistee River Trail Loop. Lightweight and high volume! Ben, I too have gone to just using a cheap water bottle for backpacking. Very lightweight and easy to store. I take a Platypus collapsible liter bottle as a back up on the trail and a 2 liter bladder for in camp. Awesome review!
Ben, Nice video. I own their pocket filters, while I have yet to use it. From video reviews on it, they suggest you rest the bottom of the filter on the ground or a rock, which makes it easier to pump, and that you make sure you don't touch the clean water hose to the dirty water hose. So placing the clean water hose back in the clean zip bag before handling dirty hose. Keep up the great video reviews...Abe Azar
I went to the Hiker Pro from an MSR MiniWorks. It was a HUGE upgrade, in terms of speed and ease of use. Hiker Pro is an killer filter. But I've since gone to the BeFree and like that even better. Flow rate is a little better and easier to clean filter, and a simpler design. I also love that I can fill up a packable seeker bladder and filter while sitting at camp. But you definitely won't go wrong with the Hiker Pro for sure. Great review!
Great overview thanks for sharing we have one of these we’re using and although I figured it out without reading any instructions your video shows some key points that were educational. Thank you for sharing
I carry the katadyn pocket filter. Yes, it’s “heavy” at 1.5 pounds, but almost all my other gear is super light so it is a non issue. The pocket is hands down the best filter money can buy.
I like the smiley face in the water. I had a similar filter and I just never liked the clumsiness of it compared to my sawyer squeeze. Plus its HEAVY and I really don't need a filter when car camping.
The initial high price is okay for the Hiker's Katadyn Pro Filter I don't mind paying that price, BUT the Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Cartridge is way too expensive. It's about the price of what I originally paid for the whole Katadyn Unit. What the heck is that all about? I think the replacement filter cost is what SUCKS!
I really like my Katadyn Pro. I use it a lot. For questionable water you can add an Aquamira tablet to the bottle. That being said, where I hike and explore I could likely drink straight from the rivers and creeks without any problems. That being said, I still use the Katadyn Hiker Pro to filter all my water. Nobody wants Giardia when exploring the outdoors on this beautiful planet.
Just wondering... Its not going to help on the weight but has anyone tried putting a sawyer mini in between the outlet hose and the pump? Maybe it would prolong the filter on the hiker pro.
I have two of these, I have always found that the pump style filters need 3 hands or more to use, I also use a sayer mini in a in line gravity system, and the be free for a pocket filter/ in the boat filter.
Ben I'm not sure if it still is this way but you use to be able to use the Hiker Pro replacement filter in the Hiker. Back when the price difference was $20-30 you it was economical to use the stock Hiker filter until it was time to replace the cartridge and pop the Pro filter in the standard mode for an instant upgrade. Of course this was also when Pur owned this product line. I'm not sure how much Katadyn has changed the design since then.
I was planning to get the Guardian water filter but after watching this video you've "sold me" on the Katadyn. Not only is it a lot cheaper but it also seems to be better made....I've seen quite a few reviews of the Guardian which say that the piston breaks very easily so I'm going to order the "Kat" instead. Many thanks for a great demo :-)
I had this pump in the late ‘90’s when it was the Pur Hiker...before Katadyn bought The Pur company. The katadyn branded filter is identical. I guess if it ain’t broke...
Thanks for demo and instruction! I just purchased a (never used) Pur (brand) Hiker Miscrofilter which appears to be identical to your Katadyn. Anybody know about this.
Mark Truso: Its the same thing.....they are sometimes sold under the "Pur" brand name and sometimes under the "Katadyn" name. The "Hiker Pro" version (black) is sold under the Katadyn brand name but the older (grey) version is sometimes sold under the "Pur" brand name.
Would anybody compare this to the MSR Guardian? Is this better? I'm battling to decide between these 2 and so far people and reviews prefer the Katadyn over the Guardian. If anybody could help me make an informed decision or has any experience using both of them, i would really appreciate your feedback! thanks in advance!
4:53 You do not connect the float to the outlet hose!! That's why it's in a separate plastic bag because you do not want to contaminate the outlet hose with the water body or inlet hose. Crikey!!!!
@@livingsurvival Obviously! You clearly say, while talking about the outlet hose, "...reach down into a river, lake or stream, throw this, throw the float down there..." As the recepticle will almost always be near the pump, it's the inlet hose which we need to be a decent length. But you're describing the outlet hose as a decent length in conjunction with talking about throwing the float (inlet). Maybe you knew what you meant to say, but to me, it didn't come across that way. Still, thanks for the vid
Just picked one of these up with a spare filter for my SHTF kit, VERY nice unit! Any idea how much volume you can put through the filter before it needs changing?
In my mind, this should have been a comparison between the Hiker Pro & MSR Miniworks instead of the Guardian. I like that the HikerPro is 5 oz lighter than the MSR Miniworks & $20.00 less in price. They are both excellent products; it almost comes down to personal preference. Customer Service & parts replacements are superb with both MSR & Katadyn.
Salt though. I wonder if this system provides any kind of salt through the process somehow. Or you can always just have salt tabs any time you go hiking or camping as a just in case.
I appreciate the video and info I have watched several of your videos. I sort of wanted you to become a zombie after drinking the algae bloom water but then realized zombies don’t make videos... 😂😂 seriously great job. Much appreciated.
I've got the old Pur Guide which looks very similar. I rubber band a paper coffee filter over the pick-up strainer to help keep a little extra silt out. Water is life. Good videos btw.
The Grayl is a superior filter for personal use in an office or travel situation. Not the most handy when backpacking however. Thanks for the comment Jeff.
Ben if you pair that with say a sawyer filter you could have some very darn clean water. My opinion, but would be neat to see you toss a video doing that, if at all possible find the nastiest dirtyest mucky water source you can to test a combination of Sawyer Mini with the Katadyn Hiker pro.
Why would you pair it with a Sawyer? There would be zero reason to do that. Check out my Katadyn BeFree filter review where I drink some nasty dirty runoff. Or any of my other water filter reviews. I have a playlist.
Фильтр наверное не плох, но механика тут лишняя. Сейчас столько бутылок со стандартной резьбой,что наверное было бы лучше если взять какой-нибудь накручивающийся на эту саму бутылку.имхо
You got very lucky my friend. I appreciate your videos (I bought a Paria tarp at your suggestion), but this video is misleading to viewers. Most people without an Env. Science background don't know the difference between algae and 'blue-green' algae, AKA cyanobacteria, which only appears in extremely brackish, oxygen depleted water. The anatoxins produced by cyanobacteria are not filtered out by the Hiker Pro, or any other hiker filter -- not even the MSR Guardian; activated charcoal will only remove anatoxin to a very small degree. Generally the Health Department will put up signs as a result of water quality testing, before any visible algal blooms take hold and before anatoxin levels are sufficient to cause significant human health problems. With a sufficient amount of ingested anatoxin your water will still come out clean and clear tasting great... but hours later you will require hospitalization or you'll die. So honestly I think this video is problematic.
You can get sick from any water yet for the most part even without a filter at least here in Michigan chances are rare. I’ve swallowed lake water my entire life without a problem. I could understand if you were drinking gallons of it daily. I also don’t seem to be able to find one documented human death from blue algae toxin in water.
I share this with no malice but with appreciation for your videos. That white text is barely legible to me and hard to read. I liked the thumbnails better when it was just the product. Not saying to go back to that but just offering a contrast. Maybe use a black border but I know not every designer offers a shadow or border option.
That is exactly the way to pump it. Many ppl complain that the pump is easy to break but if you hold it they way you are doing it , it will last forever. Thx for the review.
Agreed.
I have a PUR hike.r it still works great after 30 years. Kataydyn makes filters for it today!
I just bought this today with my $50 scheels rewards card to reduce my cost. Love it for my family of 5 for camping and our bug out truck.
Excellent review of an excellent product! yep, pretty much how I roll too. Thanks Tom.

Agreed ;) Thanks for the comment.
Worth it, need water in 3 days. Yea, couldn't resist, I don't like a short hose either. lol. Thanks. Tony
excellent review I live in the uk and have been thinking of buying this filter for some time you just made my mind up and will buy one tomorrow.
Great overview thanks for sharing we have one of these we’re using and although I figured it out without reading any instructions your video shows some key points that were educational. Thank you for sharing
Cool just picked this up for a trip to Katahdin. Good to know about the viruses. I’ll be trying it out in Franconia Notch this fall.
Great video as I had no idea what all the extra thingys were in the bag!
I carry the katadyn pocket filter. Yes, it’s “heavy” at 1.5 pounds, but almost all my other gear is super light so it is a non issue. The pocket is hands down the best filter money can buy.
Check out the smiley face at 6:19!

Lol
I like the smiley face in the water. I had a similar filter and I just never liked the clumsiness of it compared to my sawyer squeeze. Plus its HEAVY and I really don't need a filter when car camping.
LMAO I just noticed that!
I think that is something I will be getting for me prior to do any hiking this summer...thanks
I love the Katadyn Hiker when hiking with a group. When solo, it's kind of a chore to both pump and keep the output hose steady.
Great filter for groups.
$ 0.22 a gallon mate. That is cheap for water in the wild. Still cheaper than store bought by $1 a gallon!
Awesome little filter!! Thanks for the review
Please review the pocket one to I'm trying to figure out differences and see hands on b4 I purchase things for Christmas !!!
I have a video on the pocket shot.
I really like my Katadyn Pro. I use it a lot. For questionable water you can add an Aquamira tablet to the bottle. Hello Ben... how are you my dear friend? I own the Hiker version. what's the difference if any vs the Hiker Pro?.gracias
Do you still recommend this filter today?
Thank you
Just wondering... Its not going to help on the weight but has anyone tried putting a sawyer mini in between the outlet hose and the pump? Maybe it would prolong the filter on the hiker pro.
Great product and review! Nice for the base camp or for the boat. Fill them 5 gallon buckets up
Definitely.
Shoutout it lobster video check in lol
SLAMMIN'
SLAMMIN' How is the house coming along?
I have two of these, I have always found that the pump style filters need 3 hands or more to use, I also use a sayer mini in a in line gravity system, and the be free for a pocket filter/ in the boat filter.
great system Ben i think i might have to upgrade from my sawyer in the spring ! thanks for the review !
atb john
Did you upgrade from the Sawyer? Just bought one. Had the Katadyn in my hands, but a sales rep at REI suggested the Sawyer as it's lighter.
Hi I have watched some of your videos, just curious, What state are you in?
Great video. Seems like a great product but some of the reviews on Amazon point out a design flaw that buyers may want to be aware of.
if it fails in the future I will do an update for sure.
Looks like a great filter. Definitely one of the best out there. Worth the money. Great video and review. Thanks
thanks for watching and the comment James.

It is the exact same as the original.
atleast the 2015 version is
...For the field, Thanks Brother
Just got one 😀
Thanks for the great review 😁
What Water filter do you recommend today?
befree for the hollow fiber, grayl bottle for everything else.
You never mentioned how many gallons it'll filter??
Great video! Thanks for posting
I was planning to get the Guardian water filter but after watching this video you've "sold me" on the Katadyn. Thanks for the review. Ben, do you have any concern about the only 0.2 micron filter spec?
0.2 / 0.1 same difference to me. Kinda like how Sawyer claims 100,000 gallons...
Cool! The hiker is one of their best selling products! Good to have!
I had this pump in the late ‘90’s when it was the Pur Hiker...before Katadyn bought The Pur company. The katadyn branded filter is identical. I guess if it ain’t broke...
Can I clean the filter system with the water that I used
Probably
Hi please can you tell if it's safe to use the katadyn hiker pro water filter to filter water that as green algae in it. thank you
If the algae is at the surface filter the water from below it so it doesn’t clog the pre-filter. Otherwise should be just fine.
anyone know the diameter of the hose so i can replace it?
I recently got the Katadyn Vario. Whats your opinion on that model?
Never tried it. I am sure it is decent though.
Thanks for demo and instruction! I just purchased a (never used) Pur (brand) Hiker Miscrofilter which appears to be identical to your Katadyn. Anybody know about this.

the guardian protects against viruses as well.
Great clip mate. Thanks.
4:53 You do not connect the float to the outlet hose!! That's why it's in a separate plastic bag because you do not want to contaminate the outlet hose with the water body or inlet hose. Crikey!!!!
Did you actually watch the video? The float is on the inlet hose.

About 1150 liter, depending quality of water.
Where is the charcoal filter?
internal

If you put it away wet is that ok?!
No,bacteria growth occurs.Wash it out and dry it before storing
Salt though. I wonder if this system provides any kind of salt through the process somehow. Or you can always just have salt tabs any time you go hiking or camping as a just in case.
Great video. Almost bought that one but went with the vario instead
many have the vario, seems like a good model as well.
I appreciate the video and info I have watched several of your videos. I sort of wanted you to become a zombie after drinking the algae bloom water but then realized zombies don’t make videos... 😂😂 seriously great job. Much appreciated.
Lol. Thanks.
I've got a Katadyn but not sure which one. It's like the Hiker Pro
I've got the old Pur Guide which looks very similar.

Good videos btw.
Looks like a awesome product! I thought about the life straw but you would have to pay on the ground to drink. Not cool
Harmful algae likely means beneficial bacteria
MSR says that the Guardian does remove chemicals or heavy metals.
Nice video very good review good info
Great review, thanks
Thanks Ben.
So how bad was the diarrhea?
Very nice thank you for the video
thanks DOOD
I bought one, mine leaks at the top on the pump and the filter part... is this normal? I guess not
Katadyn bought out PUR and uses their same models.
I bought the Grayl water filter on your recommendation. I could not be more impressed. I've owned the Katadyn, but the Grayl is my new favorite.
The Grayl is a superior filter for personal use in an office or travel situation. Not the most handy when backpacking however. Thanks for the comment Jeff.
MSR Guardian does not filter chemicals or toxins, but otherwise its best in class.
The Hiker is lighter, and cheaper than the Pro, the only difference is it comes with a quick connect.
Can anyone confirm this?
Ben if you pair that with say a sawyer filter you could have some very darn clean water. My opinion, but would be neat to see you toss a video doing that, if at all possible find the nastiest dirtyest mucky water source you can to test a combination of Sawyer Mini with the Katadyn Hiker pro.

There’s a smiley face in the water
Your gonna have a group of people, not just one without water, if you treat your pump like that.
$70!? my hiker pro was near $200 lol
Very nice
Фильтр наверное не плох, но механика тут лишняя. Сейчас столько бутылок со стандартной резьбой,что наверное было бы лучше если взять какой-нибудь накручивающийся на эту саму бутылку.имхо
I prefer a gravity. Much less effort
I Never said it did .!
🙂 jk
Good review I have not picked one YET. But your vids help.✔️
The befre does not filter chemicals or metals.
Nope.
I Literally just bought this about 25 min ago and said go home and google Living Survival
lol
Love you by the way Ben
8:50 EDIT AND ANOTHER BOTTLE.
💞
The only difference between the hiker and the hike pro is the filters .
You can put the pro filters in the hiker non pro and turns it into a pro .

Ranger Rick over here.
Stop showing the bags! Show the filter itself! 4 minutes watching the black bag.. Are you joking?
did you know you can fast forward the video? lol
Less is Muir.
this filter doesn't do viruses
I share this with no malice but with appreciation for your videos. That white text is barely legible to me and hard to read.
I liked the thumbnails better when it was just the product. Not saying to go back to that but just offering a contrast.
Maybe use a black border but I know not every designer offers a shadow or border option.
thanks for the input Ivan, I appreciate it.
A little aggressive with that title.
Katadyn Hiker Pro does not filter bacteria

I'll pass.
