A good friend of mine had built a pond with both koi and goldfish. But he didn't have a deeper section of at least feet or more and no place to hide. He came home one day to chase a large bird away, but he found that all his koi were gone and not one goldfish. Koi is the sushi grade of the pond.

I was temporarily keeping my fish in an outdoor kiddy pool after my indoor tank sprung a leak. I'm going to be installing a fish pond outside. The other day I went to feed them and found no fish. Just their remains. I'm looking to see what can be done to prevent raccoons eating fish in a pond.

The heron decoys are not good for 3 reasons. #1 won’t take long before a real heron will figure out it’s a fake, unless you move it all the time . #2 your Koi will get a false sense of security. #3 during mating season herons may get attracted to it. I’ve tried everything because I’m near lots of golf courses and we have loads of them. The ONLY thing that works is a net. To make it less distracting to the beauty of the pond I formed large hoops of steel which made a high dome. With the net sitting higher it’s less noticeable.

      Fishing wire/line didn’t work?

@@ryanrightnowar7319 fishing line might work however you have to have it far enough away to keep a big heron out. They can stretch in quite a bit. Then that makes for an issue of you wanting to get to the pond to do any work on it. Or accidental forgetting it’s there and tripping over it lol. Done right it can work I just feel much safer with the net. One other thing is netting will keep other predators like snakes out. I did the netting on a neighbor’s pond. She has big problems with snakes because she has wet lands behind her.
