I found a used Nikon D50 for a price of few cups of coffee, so I got it out of curiosity and purely for fun! Little did I know, I actually quite enjoyed shooting with it on the streets. I paired it with the Nikon 50mm F1.8 D. For a 6MP DSLR from 2005, I thought the dinosaur DSLR performed admirably!

Any camera with at least 5mp is still good enough and is fun to use.

I love what you : old affordable 6mp camera having fun with a great 50 1.8 lens. Thats what photography is about create, create, create. Not gear, gear more gear.
At my son's recent graduation I found it interesting that the official photographers- with a top name among professional portrait companies- were using the Nikon D300, which came out in 2007. With its massive 12.3 mp and superior image quality, why change? I could only ever afford a D200, but its 10.2 mp sensor still fills a 4k set with room to spare; nice colours, too!
I am not surprised. A lot of my friends who are professionals here still use Nikon D700 or Canon 5D mark II/III for their shoots!
Before I switched to M43 I used a Canon 5D2 and a 1Ds3, both 20Mp and both old for all of my pro shoots the colours and contrast were awesome. I had ‘upgraded’ previously to newer cameras but they didn’t give a noticeable difference in the quality presented to my customers so I sold them and saved my money. The 1Ds3 had around 1/2 a million actuations when I finally sold it and was beaten up visually but it’s still going strong for its current owner. These Nikons are of a similar quality so expect it to still be going in another 17 years…..as long as you can still get batteries and memory cards
D200 better than d300 anyway ;)
My first DSLR was a Pentax K100D, 6 MP as well. Loved that camera, had amazing colors and ergonomics. Pentax will always have a special place in my heart

Good to see your first experience with Nikon is a positive one. I got into photography using my Dads old Nikon DSLR's. Always enjoyed the rendering and colors. Thanks for sharing the photos with us. Even this old dinosaur of a camera makes image much nicer than any smart phone.

Fired my d50 & 100 up a couple of months back. Was pretty much blown away how good 6 mp's looked . Good vid, Robin.
I know right! The 6MP files look really good! Better than many 100+ MP files from flagship overpriced smartphones
Actually, 6 mp is plenty for many things. Most people forget that many of the top photographers out there, including on RUclips, made their names in photography using cameras that had 6-8-10 megapixels. It was their skill in crafting good images that made them stand out.
More megapixels do give you more cropping and editing options, but the picture has to be good to start out with in the first place…🙂

Amazing. I had this camera as my first learning camera around....2008. I shot quite a few airshows with that camera. Makes me want to go and pick one up again just for the nostalgia.

NIKON D40 was my first DSLR. Only 6 megapixels. But even shooting through the LCD screen and in Raw format, there was almost no lag. I missed that when I jumped up to higher megapixel NIKONs and the lag really caused a lot of missed shots.
I also had this camera. The Nikon D40 was only 6 megapixel, but I shot more detailed and sharp photos with it than a 18 megapixel Sony point-&shoot I also used.
I had a D40 as my first DSLR as well; it, for the time, was a great little camera (and is still operational..even after being all around the world including a trip to Iraq for a humanitarian mission!) Robin, you seem to have such a good rapport with workmen and people on the street to get photos. Have you done a video on how you approach people and have a discussion about making pictures of them?
I have no experience with other Nikon cameras but I don't think there is any significant lag, something must be wrong somewhere. Nikon cameras are known to be speedy and responsive.
@@jasonnicholas4336 thanks. Well, I have shown as much as I can through these POV videos, there was nothing more to add on how I approached the people. I just walked up to them and took their photos as shown. I did make a video about shooting portraits, and have written a few articles. Do search them up!
@@robinwong I dont think its anything mechanical. Only when shooting through the live feed. On the relatively low megapixel D40 there was only a momentary lag between press and shutter, and you got the shot pretty much at the same time as the press. But with higher megapixel Nikons, (I upgraded to the D3200 and then D5100) there is like a 1/2 second lag between the press and the shutter. Now that I think about it, I think its more to do with the camera switching back to viewfinder mode (because the live view goes black) to actually engage the shutter than it has to do with processing higher megapixels images..

Thanks for the kind words. I intend to show more of how I got my shots, but the action camera I had was very limiting. Sometimes the subjects I was shooting were completely out of frame!
Excellent, still have a Nikon d40x, these cameras are easy to use, no nosense Pure photography cameras. Try a Nikon Coolpix 5000 with microdrive all in one.

I recently bought a Nikon S 9100 point and shoot compact for 15€ on Ebay and it is amazing. I just wanted something that replaces my phone for shuttertherapy Sessions with my dog and it really is a gem. I'm more and more interested in older cameras because that "old" tech really delivers to this day and it is so much fun to explore the limitations and their unique quirks!
I feel the same, I am in the hunt for older cameras too, of course I won't pay too much, as long as the price is reasonable.

Nikon DSLRs are built like tanks. Even my lowly D3000 from 12 years back is still working. I love the rendering from it's 10MP CCD sensor. Though it's high ISO limit is 800 max.
Yeah technically the images can't compete with anything from modern days but use them well within the limitations, you can still get wonderful results!
Yes Nikon and Canon DSLRs are well built, but Pentax is a level above both!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. My first DSLR was the D50 with a 50mm f1.8D in 2005 and was regularly used for many years until the shutter button started having consistency issues.
I have since moved on to using mirrorless but I took it back out a few months back to take some pictures for fun and forgot how fun it was to shoot with the D50 (or DSLR in general).
But I do agree that 6MP is all you really need in this day and age where everyone is looking at photos through cellphones and it is still a very capable camera even without all the bells and whistles of modern day cameras

Ah, that D50 is built well like a tank. I'll have to read up the specs later.
But this video brings up a happy memory. My first serious camera is my Dad's Nikon D200. It was a huge jump from using a second hand Canon S2 bridge camera to a full blown semi-pro DSLR. Thick. Heavy. A literal tank. I love it and I slowly made it my camera over time by growing my small arsenal of lenses, batteries, and a third party handgrip. I still have the D200 and it's one of my two heirloom cameras (the other one is a Fujifilm XT20). Who knows? Maybe I'll play with the old girl again soon.
Oh yes do bring it out and shoot a few rounds!
Nikon ergonomics seems to always be well done. They make strong and reliable cameras. You can get punchy colors. I had a D5000, and now a D3500 which will be my last DSLR. The battery life on DSLR is so - so much better. Oh and that great mirror slap sound. :) Take care, Loren
Hi Loren. Still have a Nikon APS-C kit and still shoot it. Migrated from a D40 to D90 to D3100 and now D5600. Still shoot Nikon 35mm too (N80). Although I now shoot M43 (both Oly and Panny) probably 80% of the time, I still love my Nikons, and will probably never part with them.
Agreed, Nikon, much like Canon and Olympus, true camera companies know how to make cameras that are comfortable to handle and use. Unlike some non traditional camera companies, they just don't feel the same, as if no "soul".

The first machine i bought was a nikon f70, then a d3300, i upgraded to a d5100 and a year later i sold and bought my olympus (partly thanks to you robin) but i missed the nikon... i bought a d200! It's a real tank and I love the typical nikon colors, the buttons and menus are fantastic. But my em5 II is much lighter😁. great video... as always!

That was my very first Nikon digital. I purchased it new when it came out in 2005, and paid a bunch for it.
I have recently seen several D50 videos. Yes, I have thought of buying one, they are NOT expensive at all.
But I still own a D5500 and a D5600. I shoot them sometimes and can't justify buying an older D50.

Hi Robin, thank you for your video. I shot some of my best images ever with the D50 back in 2008. Now I am shooting with olympus e-m10 ii and e-m1 iii. The only issues i had were: the small display and the lack of live view, but the battery life was incredible.
Imagine when Olympus came up with Live View people laughed at them (E-330). Now we all can't live without it!
I've never owned a Nikon, but after this video I would consider. I love my Olympus OMD EM1 MKII, but the older stuff still takes great pics. Great colors and photos here..... and another great video. Well done sir!

Great review! Last week I "upgraded" from a D50 (my 1st & only DSLR) to the latest, greatest Nikon tech (ha ha), the D5200. The D5200 shoots great images, but I won't be retiring the D50. I really appreciate it's size & build quality, & most especially it's internal focus motor. The D50 with the 50mm 1.8 D is a dynamic combo.
The D50 is a rare DSLR camera. For its time and price, it had a lot of features not normal then or later in an entry-level DSLR. For example the LCD screen on top, screw drive for using older mechanical-drive autofocus lenses, etc. It was my first DSLR (bought it in the fall of 2005), upgrading from an IXUS 30. Bought it with the kit lens, which was ok, but nothing more. Added a Sigma 18-125, Sigma 135-400 and an older Nikkor 28 f/2,8. Looking back at the pictures I took with it, it produced some wonderful images. Later I got both an D7000 and a D7200, but I've always kept the D50. This video inspired me to dig it out and try it again (it hasn't really been used since 2013...). So thank you Robin, for inspiring me to try out my first love in cameras once again.

Thanks for this! I've been getting into photography and until now I've only had my phone, but since I've inherited the D50 from my father, I've been curious as to what it's like as I wait for an sd card to come in the mail.
I just scored a D50 and a D80 for $80. A year ago I frequented a thrift store and bought a D50 for $8. I recently have been shooting the D50 with a 70-200 2.8. The photos come out so good.

OK, Robin performing some digital camera archeology again! 😉Recently I found out, there's still some energy in the battery of our good old Canon 20D after being idle for six years back in the drawer. I got him a new friend - ef-s 24/2,8. Now I'm looking forward to take this combo to the streets to test it thoroughly. But I must give the camera some care first - the sensor is dirty as hell ... Hey I’ve been following from the Oly days. I LOVE this D50 I bought earlier in the year. It’s incredible! I think I love the images more than my Oly EM5m2. It was also my first Nikon lol. It’s all about that CCD sensor!
Nice photowalk with great pictures from this old Nikon D50. I have my D3000 (10MP) still in use. It is god enough for me until today. Meanwhile I have three of them. When ever I bought a used Lens I bought it with the camera body :-).
Cameras like the d50 are the perect cameras for someone wanting to try photography and can still produce some lovely images.
My first DSLR was the Nikon D50, which I bought in 2005. It took lovely photographs, particularly landscapes because the colours were great. I never really thought about the resolution cos 6 megapixels was par for the course back then I suppose and I was very pleased with the pictures it produced anyway.
I love these reviews of older DSLR's. I picked up a D80 for next to nothing and I love it. In fact it has the exact same ccd sensor as my other older DSLR. That being a Pentax K10D. Just love the colours and character these cameras produce.

Old cameras are great indeed. My personal favorite atm that I carry everywhere with me.. Is an old 10Mpix Leica compact camera that is just super.
Nothing beats Nikon colors.
I have to disagree. I don't like the colder and flatter tones. I prefer Canon or Olympus colors.

I was given a Nikon D50, normal lens, 300 zoom lens, macro lens, battery and charger. My first digital SLR !

Wow! Those pictures of the coffee on the table are tack sharp, even better than my 50mm 1.8D on Nikon D 90 with a 12 megapixel sensor. At 5.10 if you took pictures of people in the UK sat at a cafe they would probably frown at you most of the time, especially risky where there are children, but it obviously depends on your approach with street photography. People there seem so relaxed , warm and friendly 🙂

Nice! I picked up a Pentax K10D that was "before my time", but that was drawing me in with great build quality and CCD sensor. That is slightly newer so huge10 Mpixel resolution :)
10MP vs 6MP would have been night and day!
Now I shoot a few nikon cams...film and digital ....f90x film and d600 as well the d7100
Got the d7100 and d600 under 1000 Canadian dollars ..both still extremely usable cams for all my projects ..pro and personal

Very interesting, D 50 was my first digital camera back in 2005 and I took a lot of great shots, especially with the 50 mm 1.4 and with the Tamron 70-300. I never really liked the upgrade I had, D 5500 and D7500.
D50 was indeed a legend. Maybe you can try some of the newer mirrorless offerings from Nikon? I am sure things have improved a lot ever since
Totally agree Robin , upgrades are useful when Technology changes dramatically. However depending on what you shoot any camera is capable of amazing results. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses is the game. If you shoot close 6 Megapixel is plenty. Marketing makes us want to upgrade. Like the old saying , need to upgrade skill not the camera. My dad gave me his old D80, the D50s successor. I'm so used to my OM-D em-1 ii that I automatically grab it but I must haul out the old Nikon for a change.
You are absolutly right. My favorite cameras at the moment are Nikon D80, D700 and Canon 5D
After years of hibernation, I woke up from the film camera and entered the world of digital by buying a Nikon D60, good enough to capture the automatisms of photography. As we always say it is not a question of the camera but of the photographic eye.
I think D60 is still a fantastic camera today!
I love my Nikon D3 it is full frame and awesome.
Robin.... no words can describe your passion for photography. And yes WHO cares? I have the same 50mm f1.8 lens on my....... tadaaaah! Nikon D2H. That's right, a Nikon D2H from 2003 and the pictures I get are like no other for being 4.1MP! And it is still good today. And yes, I did subscribe after I also saw your video of the Olympus Evolt camera (E-520 I believe).

Robin, great to see you using system other than the Oly. Talking about old Nikon legendary cameras, I still have my D200 sitting in my dehumidifier and I use it once in a while pairing it with my Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art. Just love the color coming out of its CCD sensor. If you have a chance, try it. BTW, I use both Nikon and Oly systems.
I use a lot of systems other than Olympus.
I'd love to try as many cameras as possible, but this is also a venture that brings no return, other than just for fun. Unless I can find the D200 selling for the price just a few cups of coffee, I'd pass!
