- Milicent Patrick was the makeup artists and special effects designer who created the iconic look for Gill-man in the 1954 classic, Creature from the Black Lagoon. So why haven't we heard of her?
Another Monstrum #Shorts from your friends at @pbsstoried
I'm so glad she's getting the recognition! I wonder how her name surfaced to get her the credit she deserved.
I believe it was surviving cast and crew who praised her. There was a anniversary DVD release quite awhile back and I remember Rico browning (who played the creature underwater) briefly talking about her
It was well known to univeral monter fans, its just nobody else knew.
I've known this for about 20 odd years when I was first getting into horror.
Most people just watch the movie and leave it at that, but people like me if we love the movie it becomes more than a movie and it becomes a passion and I have to research it.
You'll be surprised at some facts about your favourite movies, some are funny others are dark or even tragic but it's always worth doing a bit of digging into.
This is honestly sad that she didn’t get the credit. This is one of the coolest creature designs I’ve ever seen!! Millicent Patrick is now on my list of favorite creature designers!
Just imagine all the other hugely impactful or more important things women did that men took the credit for
There's unfortunately no way of knowing just how much that is.
Discovering DNA
@@rickseiden1 Fire. Cooking. Housing. Clothing....
Or white women from non-white women, men from other men, etc.
Cringe
Now she's not unknown to me! So many women creating iconic staples of our collective art memory, and so many forgotten in favor of their male contemporaries.
Imagine what she could have gone onto do if she had been given the credir she deserved? What other amazing creatures could she have designed? The Gil-Man suit isn't amazing for it's look but also for its functionality. Robbing her of her credit robbed us all of her talent.
She needs recognition. She's the Icon, Gillman is her work. Credit where it's due.
Petty bosses are the worst. Hope the dude's name gets trampled across history
Bestmore? More like Bud Worstmore.
It’s Bud Westmore, and he has been publicly shamed for not giving credit where it was due. Wikipedia has the correct credit for the makeup. IMDB still has him credited and Millicent Patrick as “uncredited” (because she wasn’t credited when the movies were released). She is credited as the original creator of the costume in the trivia for the movie.
So did the studio that allowed her credit to be stolen pay her family for damages and compensation?
Man she deserves so much better then this.
I'm getting he hit on her and was rejected by her so he decided to ruin her career vibes.
humanity never changes 😒
Pretty much, weak men ego, can't take it.
I remember reading about Millicent on an obscure blog post almost 8 years ago and thinking WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF HER? The Creature from the Black Lagoon has been my favorite since I was 10 years old. So glad she is getting credit she deserves ❤
There's a whole Netflix drama series in this story.
What’s it called? 😮
@@echelon4ever3098 They mean "there's a story in this" as in there is enough compelling drama to make a series out of.
Did you know about Milicent Patrick?
Unfortunately, I have not.
Fun Fact: Ingmar Bergman watched Creature From the Black Lagoon every year on his birthday
Ugh, outrageous she didn't get credit! Imagine what else she would have gone on to do if she was correctly celebrated
Awww, I'm so glad she's getting the recognition now!
The Gilman is my favorite creature too! Like any good Lovecraftian scholar, I can't really have another favorite.
FINALLY! She gets the TRUE recognition she deserves! Her design is INCREDIBLE and memorable for all fans of the monster genre, old and new. I find it absolutely upsetting that she wasn’t credited for her work. This gal deserves 100% RESPECT!
She definitely deserves her flowers. RIP to Milicent and Ricou Browning who played the Gilman in water
Thank you so much for your effort...❤
Millicent Patrick ROCKS!!!!
🤘😎🤘
And this is a legitimate Bad a** cool freaking movie that still stands up to this day
Omg ty so much my and my late grandfather watched this every Halloween since I was 4 and he is my favorite and it's a blessing to know the person behind this what a gem ty so much
So pissed off for Milicent Patrick! How could someone do that?
Common practice my friend, so despicable
Never heard of her but thanks for sharing her story! I personally found the film to be rather unremarkable EXCEPT for the gill-man who really made the whole film worth seeing! She deserves great acclaim
you have to read mallory o mearas book Lady from the Black Lagoon. 5/5
That's sad. We live in a man's society.
my goodness! she was beautiful - so graceful. 🌷🌱
That's crazy.
She deserves her own movie or tv series.
Maybe one that combines her struggle as a uncredited artist and a window into the imagination of the artist coming to life in dreams. Maybe if Guillermo del Toro directed it as the shape of water was beautiful.
poor Millicent, to think of all that she has suffered. "which artist, suffer with her"
I’m glad that she’s getting credit. I never knew it. That’s why it’s important to have RUclips this is a clear example how good RUclips is bring something that was literally hidden and making it come to surface … I mean she was a hidden gem, but she’s getting her awards
Thankyou Millicent, for giving the world such a fantastic and awesome creature
I bought a glow-in-the-dark Creature From the Black Lagoon action figure in the '80s. Back when Universal tried their hand in the crowded action figure scene. The Gill-Man was definitely a favourite of mine growing up.
That’s ocean man
I would love to see her sketches, do a book about millicent❤yessss
Rather than be jealous of her fame. He should have basked in it as a fan who got to be closest.
Good on her for getting the credit now! The Gill Man is a badass beast!
She deserve better ❣️🥰
That’s insane that, imagine all she could have done for Universal Studios!! What a sad little man! She deserves a lot of credit respect and recognition for this and more!!
I enjoy any classic horror monster. But the Creature is my favorite and I have a 14" version of him. Hope you get the recognition you deserve. RIP.
Great theme music too!
We have the same favorite. The Gill Man was just amazing
Oh wow ,thank u for putting Ms Patrick's name out there. Just wow,sad how women were not respected in those jobs. Well most artists never get the credit they deserved back in the day
Gill-man is my favorite of the Universal Monsters.
The creature from the black lagoon is basically a jaws type film. Excellent movie
Gilman (TCFTBL) was my fave classic movie monster too!!!!!
Who is Gill-Man? The one in the video is Renato Alexandre
Truly a crime! The Creature is my favourite. Truth about Bud should be known for his selfishness, just like Stan Lee.😥
I have the book on her. Amazed me being a fan of the movie never knew about hee until recent years
My favorite monster too.just loved it when i saw the trailers of the movie on youtube.not be ause he was scary but because he was damn aeful tremendously hugely funny
Ocean Man
Take me by the hand
Lead me to the land
She should be uplifted, but her boss should also be exposed and shredded so what remains of his reputation is properly stained by his offenses.
Typically someone who makes something soo iconic gets ZERO CREDIT and someone who barley lifted a finger just because they are a man get all the credit DISGUSTING NARROW MINDED LOGIC!!!
OCEAN MAN
Her boss probably made a pass at her and she said no. But glad she’s getting the recognition now.
Ahhh yes. Bless you Emily! I tell this story to everybody who will listen. I think Shape of Water in many ways has Millicent Patrick nods.
Equal pay for equal play.
My Favorite Monster Also........ ❤
Millicent is also extremely beautiful woah
A beauty as well
Good for her!
Hollywood was always scarier than the gillman
Is she alive?
Sadly, no. She was born 108 years ago in 1915, was 39 at the time of the film's release, and died in 1998 at the age of 82.
@@allisonhomiak2336 Thanks.
That movie was scary, but one can't overlook the subtextual messages of beastiality presented to the audience. Perhaps that was one of the scariest parts.
thats sad, she won't get her money and money is all that matters
mine too!!
This is so sad
I always thought that the Gill-Man was real 😢
It's so criminal that she didn't get the credit she deserved all because of Bud Westmore's arrogance.
It's so hard to find true top talent. Having her finest work usurped by her vainglorious boss is, unfortunately, all to common. Here's to Millicent, Maker of Monsters, a little known Amazon in the world of cinematic lore.
What lurks deep in the dark waters of the lagoon? Watch and find out.
Agreed👍
Thank you guys for informing us about the true talent behind this film.
It's a this movie get so little credit. If any movie deserves an update this movie does. With today effects good leading cast and great writers. This movie can be a hit. As long as they don't dumb it down into today's society.
wow thats sad
❤❤❤
i thought the monster was made for the Ween clip
All too common 😢
Never again? Damn.

Ocean man take me by the hand lead me to the land
That is just sickening, actually angers me. I have the deepest appreciation for people's talents and for them not to be recognized for it is shameful beyond the pale.
Ocean man
hey look its ocean man!
🔷✊🏼100% Millicent!!!!!
Yeah she gets the credit NOW! Now that's she's either too old to benefit from it or dead
Shes beautiful and hot the make up artist
My mother used to make up stories about how things were invented. The stories always had a woman inventing something and then her husband proclaiming he invented it. The last line was "but he took credit for it anyway.
Story of men being jealous of women as we know it!
What else is new?
I think the man that took the credit from her, should equally have the credit taken from him today. Mark him as a sexist petty little pp guy.
Damn shame
Emily Zarqa you are a true feminist
PUT THESE ON A SECOND CHANNEL! PLEASE!
Damn is that woman beautiful.
Millicent was a hottie
Her boss (Bud) was the person taking all the risk as the head of the makeup department. He would've been responsible whether the costume was successful or a total flop.
If the costume looked like crap, would you have made a video about how Milicent Patrick was a really bad artist? Stop being so hypocritical.
For that reason 😂😂😂 I'm totally agree back then and even nowadays.... Head of design getting a lot of crap if those creations sucked....
How I know? Ask BMW..
ADRIAN VAN HOOYDONK vs Domagoj Dukec design periods....
Former design philosophy was beautifully understated that not CONTEMPORARY screamer but maturely elegant as time passed...
Later name design so gaudy so in your face worst than Isuzu Vehicross or Pontiac Aztec...
Have you read credits before? They don't just list a few higher ups, they list everyone who worked on the movie/tv show/game.
Furthermore, have you seen the internet? of cause people would make a video mocking terrible design.
No one is being a hypocrite, you are just trying to defend bad people with bad arguments.
How is it hypocritical? If the costume looked like crap, nobody would be talking about this movie over 70 years later
This makes me think of the Margaret Keane story. A movie about Millicent’s life and experience on the set of The Creature from the Black Lagoon is in order.
it’s like when scientists or Professors put their names on research papers first, when Ph.D. candidates or hired researchers did all the work.
for instance, Edison. he had many scientists working for him, yet he claimed all the credit! this has been happening in business and industry still. the real creator gets his or her “salary”, while the company reaps all the profits!! nice, huh!
have a good day :) 🌷🪻🌱
