7029 'Clun Castle' A Gruelling Climb Over The S&C

- The double chimney Great Western Castle Class 7029 'Clun Castle' retraces its steps over the steeply graded 'Long Drag' which it last traversed in 1967 and its been 11 years since we last saw a Great Western engine over the Settle & Carlisle Railway. With the day upon us, all eyes turned to the weather forecast, which was very bleak to say the least with rain and wind in the forecast. Not ideal considering the landscape and terrain which we would be filming from. There was also a few hurdles for the crew of Clun Castle to deal with, which was two speed related restrictions through Settle Station (10mph) and Horton In Ribblesdale (20mph) these restrictions would seriously hamper the climb, so this wasn't going to be a record setting run.
With the weather set against them, there was worst to come, a signal check at Settle Junction brought the train to a stand at the foot of the Long Drag due to a proceeding DMU not clearing the section in front. With a heavy train including the dead weight diesel, this was going to be a Battle with the big bank and this is what it turned out to be. Reports suggest mid 20's was sustained up the Long Drag all the way to Blea Moor tunnel, not bad considering the restrictions and poor conditions with an equivalent load of 12/13 coaches. Action is captured near Horton In Ribblesdale and Selside Shaw.
For the return leg the weather had eased off but remained dull. The destination for the Cumbrian Mountain Express was Appleby due to issues at Carlisle. We first capture the tour departing Appleby with the Castle once again in full voice as it crosses the A66 road. Our next glimpse of 7029 is a Great Strickland where the Castle is finally seen at a quicker pace as it heads up the lower slope of the southbound climb to Shap Summit. This is swiftly followed by a shot at Thrimby as the train sweeps round the curve in style.
The final shot, which we somehow made with only two minutes to spare sees the tour racing through Warrington Bank Quay at Speed. This topped off a challenging day for all concerned and hopefully we wont have wait multiple decades to see Clun Castle tackle the Northern Hills.
I hope you enjoy the coverage.
Congratulations to whoever was firing 7029, great job!
I second that! Maintaining the boiler at blow-off point while the loco was being thrashed for that period must have taken some doing!
Excellent footage there Liam and Phil. Nice to see Clun working over the Long Drag once again
I am not the greatest fan of GWR locos but this is a cracking video showing Clun Castle truly rising to the challenge that is the S&C. She is working hard with a heavy train and shows she is in fine fettle ready for some high speed running once she has left the Pennine challenge behind. Well done on a great and entertaining video. Absolutely brilliant!
Absolutely breathtaking videos, especially the curve, steam locomotive turning at full speed, thrilling feeling. Thanks for sharing.
An excellent Video! All of it was great but the last one especially. A GWR Castle Screaming through the station at full speed (or rather what theyre permitted) . You must of had the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. A brilliant video!
Simply some of the best footage I have ever seen of a Castle loco. Brilliant, many thanks for sharing it.
Great work Liam & Phil for managing so many locations! All of those shots were lovely to behold and I particularly like Selside and Warrington Bank Quay. Regards, Dan
Thanks for the great footage -- she did the GWR proud -- great white steaming on wet rails !! - she even took a class 47 on a sightseeing tour too ! -- what a gorgeous lady she looks !! .
Superb, thank you. Equivalent to load 13 (with the 47 attached). Loco and traincrew doing a great job at working the train in damp conditions.
Why equivalent?
Great video. She was certainly doing the maximum at Warrington befre shutting off. Thanks for sharing.
Super work Liam , good display I thought from the Castle especially on the S&C with the restrictions 👍
Top of the good work boys and the settle and Carlisle line is definitely the non GWR territory for clun
Brilliant photography of a loco well managed doing what it does best. Thank you.
Fantastic set of shots. Thanks guys 👍👍👍👍👍
just brilliant - thank you for sharing this with us much appreciated
Brilliant mate. Thank you.
Excellent video Liam and Phil. Great sounds and plenty of exhaust. Great skill by the foot plate crew. Enjoyable watching. Kind regards C&A
Wonderfull to see Clun Castle today Liam and Phill, great show I thought from the northern hills, many lovely locations, you managed to catch me a few time on your video 😅😊 cheers .
A nice video you have made Liam and Phil :)
Magnificent video.
Nice video great camera work as usual as always keep it up bye for now Philip
Liam & Phil, Nicely captured and good to see the diesel idling on the climbs. The weather was the spoiler. Regards, John
wonderful!
Great video. Sounded nice on the s&c.
Ah - WBQ. It is amazing/annoying how many tour trains go through without stopping - so potential passengers have to go to Crewe or Lancaster.
Which preserved Castle Class engine do you love watching most, Clun Castle, Nunney Castle, Earl of Mt. Edgcumbe, Defiant or Pendennis Castle? Or is it equal for all of them?
Until the work at Carstairs is finished Carlisle is off limits to Steam Railtours due to capacity issues
it is not called the long drag for nothing i remember going on the 10.25am from leeds to carlisle/glasgow c train in 1964 with a clan loco pulling 15 coaches un asisted up there at walking pace and commong back with a brit and still on time into leeds at 2145 at night
