the padding on the gloves is more for the person getting punched than the guy punching its to protect the face. back in the days of bareknuckle boxing it wasn't uncommon for a boxer to get his eye punched out of his head.
@@MrSporkdude The padding protects your hand a lot. Bare knuckle causes more cutting and superficial damage but most of the serious long-term damage from boxing is internal brain injuries. I think it is fair to ban him from fighting but not from coaching, he learned his lesson, and should be allowed to have a second chance, he is not likely to encourage a boxer under him to cheat ever because he lived through the pain he caused to others and how it led to someone's death. The biggest reason for me that he doesn't deserve a second chance is that for 40 minutes he watched as he turned a man's face to hamburger and was ok with it. At any time he could have said to himself, this is too much.
Nope, he shouldn't be allowed near a ring in ANY capacity. Cheating in competition, especially in ways as blatant as this, should mean a total ban from anything related, including training.
I watched this video, then cried for Billy Collins Jr when it was over. I am a Puerto Rican whose also from the Bronx, NY. I too boxed as a youngster but never got past the Golden Gloves level, which for me, was an achievement. However, this is why it breaks my heart even more... To know that one of my countrymen, with more talent than me, chose to cheat rather than train harder. And, how this shortcut cost another man his career and subsequently, his life. Still, I have to acknowledge that Resto was just a kid at the time and kids simply do stupid things! And, even further to that, I don't believe that Resto is the same man today that he was when he fought Billy Collins. None of us are the same person we were when in our 20's. I agree that he should be given a second chance, but he should definitely stay away from boxing. For me it is simple, Billy Collins Jr can't go back into boxing, so why should Resto be allowed? Resto should concede this on his own and step away respectfully.
I feel conflicted about Resto ... He was taken advantage of by his Manager and thus was somewhat of a victim himself. On the other hand he is a grown man and could have refused to participate in this BS, so for him to partake in cheating he must've had a questionable personality to begin with. I have no doubt he's remorseful, and the cheating was probably not his own idea, but it was his choice to go through with it, and he should not step a foot in the ring ever again. He jeopardized the Sport, and him becoming a Boxer again after ruining another Boxer's career would jeopardize Collins.
7:20 exactly. He didn't just cheat, he tampered with safety equipment. It's fair to say that letting him handle safety equipment again is a bad idea. Beyond that, I think a second chance, in a form without such opportunity, is entirely fair.
At first i was screaming to give him a second chance, but your remark on having watched the whole fight with prior knowledge on what was going on and how it left a mark on you changed my mind. I also want to add: Everyone should be given a chance to show remorse and defeat the demons of your past. Judging his old trainers lifestyle he did the opposite, which really sucks...
I think it's important to set a precedent that when you put your opponent in danger to gain an advantage that you will never play in your sport ever again. It has nothing to do with if they will re-offend, but to keep others from thinking about doing it.
I had no clue he was 22... he was my age. So young, poor kid... he had so much potential and these awful "men" took everything from him. They took this young man's life. Resto deserves life. Not 2 and a half years of incarceration. He killed a man.

Resto was happy to take the belt, the money, the accolades and have his reputation intact. His only regret was being caught. . His manager should have faced attempted murder charges, he knew full well what damage would result from the plastered hand wraps and along with those gloves were nothing short of a weapon.
As my dad said, "The only square thing in boxing is the ring!"And he would have known, as he was a golden gloves in New Jersey and in the US Navy back in the 1930s and 40s, at a time when a 10 round fight was just getting warmed up, and it wasn't a sport, but a means to keep your 8 head Irish family fed and clothed. It is a brutally corrupt sport now as it was back then.

Man, I used to be a boxer, still do some every now and then. I'm very passionate about this sport... I don't know much what to say, this story gets me a bit teary eyed and gives me a heavy heart. The thought of Billy's career being ruined because of the cheating, and it is clear he was passionate about it, because it ruined his life. I imagine the boy's only dream was to live his life boxing. But at the same time, it's also clear that Luis is also very passionate about it. He had his passion taken away from him, he was never able to go back to what he loved doing because his coach wanted to cheat. In the end he is a victim too. I'm very passionate about boxing too, I can understand how painful it is for them. I get very sad every now and then knowing that some stuff that happend in my life made it so I didn't follow my path into professional boxing, but I still know I always have the option to go back, to go pro again, even if life makes it hard. These men had it taken away from them, they never could. If something took away from me the possibility of fighting forever, I guess it would also ruin my life. I feel very sad for them both.
After watching video, and dozens other videos of fights gone awry, you should know now that a career in professional boxing isn't all glory and fair chances. Your life is probably pretty good, compared to be a punching bag for other people's Saturday night amusement.
@@ricky-sanchez I know it isn't glory. I never wanted to do it for any glory. It was more a question of love for the sport, I loved doing that and the idea of doing something I loved professionally just seemed great. I guess this is what makes this stuff even more sad, whenever someone loses the chance to do it, it's not that these people lose the chance to win, is that they can't do what they love.
You missed a big fact in Resto's gloves, 1oz of padding was removed AND after wrapping his hands his soaked his wrapped fist in plaster, which means he basically casted both fist.
I feel like he should get another chance, but his coach should have been given a lot more of a harsher punishment. Too often there are cases of the employee taking the fall, while the boss working sidelines weasels out with a slap on the wrist.
Food for thought: It is good that they never let him fight again. But I think there is a place for him outside of the ring but within the sport for 2 reasons. 1) Second chances can really give a person a new life if they use it well. 2) By being visible in the sport, with his story being known, he becomes something of a warning, a warning that won't be nearly as loud from any other place. A little anecdote: I have a friend, have known him since the early 90s (I was born in 80, he is a year or two younger than me). He ended up going to jail in his 20s on a felony assault (regular, punch & kick style assault, not that other kind). I forget how many years he was locked up for, it was like 3 or 4 years or so. But he used his time while incarcerated to do a complete 180 from the trajectory he had been on. When he got out, he made the most of it and essentially started a completely new version of his life. Someone who also knew him (the brother of the woman who had his kid before he was locked up, and also a friend of mine since middle school) said straight up that he turned into 'dad of the year'. 2 or 3 years ago, he got his felony record expunged due to remaining on the good side of the law. So he is no longer in that former felon category that a lot of people never get out of. Has a house in a nice place in the next town over (which is a mostly forested town, really nice area), a family, a nice life. Nothing fancy, but a good life. Second chances can be an amazing thing to people who realize how special they really are and make the most of them. edit: One last thing: Everytime someone who has f**ked up bad sees someone who has made the best of a second chance, they are shown an example of what they could be, what they can strive for. An example to be followed.
The fact that he cheated and went along with it because his trainer wanted it so means that he should not be allowed to second chance in any type of sport it doesn't care if you admit you were wrong after the fact you still did wrong and you should face punishment like any other person
He wasn't convicted for murder because he didn't commit murder. He committed assault and was convicted for it. A lifelong ban seems fair enough, though.
Collins tenacity and determination are certainly very admirable, but they cost him his vision, career and eventually his life. I had laser eye surgery and losing vision for a minute was terrifying, imagining it being permanent in one eye is mortifying. He really should have given up even if no one else noticed it. Sometimes the fight just isn't worth it. I realize in the heat of the moment it is hard to gauge just how badly you're hurt thanks to adrenaline, but we must keep experiences like this in mind to protect ourselves in the future.
Beautifully put darken the ring with his presence. I agree count ur blessings and move on. Man your videos are great been a fan for some time now ur among a few golden channels in my book. Love from Detroit

What these men done is absolutely vile and the justice that came satisfied me very much, but what’s the point if you don’t allow people to progress. Everyone’s done stupid things at a young age and I doubt he would be thinking of the possibility of this outcome at that young age with star stricken eyes.
Feel bad for Resto, as he was most likely being used by Panama to win on large bets. But he was still complicit and deserved everything that came at him.

He knew what he did was wrong, and even after spending time in prison, he continued to lie about his envolvement for decades. He's only sorry he got caught and not allowed to fight again.

We all like to criticize what he did but we all have done something that has hurt someone knowing full well it would hurt them, we ourselves are not without fault, but if we cannot forgive him and give him a second chance to prove he has changed then how can we call ourselves, virtuous or good, and even more so how can we ask to be forgiven if we do not forgive?

the padding on the gloves is more for the person getting punched than the guy punching its to protect the face. back in the days of bareknuckle boxing it wasn't uncommon for a boxer to get his eye punched out of his head.
@@MrSporkdude The padding protects your hand a lot. Bare knuckle causes more cutting and superficial damage but most of the serious long-term damage from boxing is internal brain injuries. I feel he's genuinely remorseful and he's clearly passionate about the sweet science, but yeah once you've made a gross mockery of the sport like that it's even more a mockery to let that person back in as if it were just a "time out". Actions lead to consequences and really should reinforce the message to present and future boxers to not EVER fuck around like he did.
I think it is fair to ban him from fighting but not from coaching, he learned his lesson, and should be allowed to have a second chance, he is not likely to encourage a boxer under him to cheat ever because he lived through the pain he caused to others and how it led to someone's death.
I think he was a kid mislead by a scummy coach who took him down a bad road, I think that if he had the right coach he'd have made a fantastic boxer, and I think he can make a good trainer

He is not remorseful, he only confessed after going totally broke, that too 10 years later. And he also tried to frame the trainer. Looks like at the start they had some deal, but after all these years trainer cheated on him too. So confession was his last attempt to threaten the trainer.

I remember watching the original footage on Reddit a while ago, I'm glad this dude got convicted
Got 2 and a half years for attempted murder.
The biggest reason for me that he doesn't deserve a second chance is that for 40 minutes he watched as he turned a man's face to hamburger and was ok with it. At any time he could have said to himself, this is too much.
*No way in hell* you let that guy back in the ring. Ever.
Resto should concede this on his own and step away respectfully.
i boxed 2, stay strong brother
I couldn't agree with you more! Cheating like that is dirty and disgusting and I feel so heartbroken for that poor Boy's family

I also want to add:
Everyone should be given a chance to show remorse and defeat the demons of your past. Judging his old trainers lifestyle he did the opposite, which really sucks...
I think it's important to set a precedent that when you put your opponent in danger to gain an advantage that you will never play in your sport ever again. It has nothing to do with if they will re-offend, but to keep others from thinking about doing it.

I wonder if Billy Collins knew something was up and decided to win in spite of the cheating, but ultimately didn't manage it. 😣
The fact that he applied again and again after essentially killing some one kind of shows that he is just a bit full of shit when it comes "paying his dues"
He ruined some ones life, your life should be in a perpetual state of giving back not trying to "move past it"
Man, I used to be a boxer, still do some every now and then.
I love the way you tell a story.

Heard this story 100x and honestly your video on this is one of the better ones
As a representative of PR, we fully disown and want nothing to do with Resto
The fact that he cheated and went along with it because his trainer wanted it so means that he should not be allowed to second chance in any type of sport it doesn't care if you admit you were wrong after the fact you still did wrong and you should face punishment like any other person
If you asked me, it's not all that surprising that a sport fundamentally built on violence would end up breeding violent crimes like this.
He wasn't convicted for murder because he didn't commit murder. He committed assault and was convicted for it. A lifelong ban seems fair enough, though.
I'm sure if he had of killed him in the ring he would be charged with murder because of the plaster
Great job presenting this heartbreaking story.
It'd be a bad precedent to let him back in. He commited manslaughter in the ring
Shocking that they didn’t check these sorts of things
