Alicent's situation is realistic for a medieval queen because they are usually sent to live in a foreign land where they have no connections/allies and only have their children (Who are effectively disinherited). This could've been more compelling than the "friend sleeps with friend's dad betrayal" type of cheap drama that isn't worthy of GOT but ended up defining the show and Alicent to most fans anyway despite not being in the book. So many other possible interactions are sacrificed by making Alicent and Rhaenyra childhood friends and ultimate making the chief co-conspirator of the Greens just some victim all to for an even more basic narrative of everybody being oppressed.

      @@Alejojojo6 Actually Alicent is Rhaenyras enemy, i get the stance and Otto was definitely the maker of the conflict but NONE of it works without Alicent.
      I would say your thought is slightly flawed. it is not that the Kingdom wasn’t prepared for a female ruler. The whole point is that the Targaryens are the biggest power in the world, they say in ep 1 “The only thing that can destroy the house of the dragon was itself”
      If Alicent and Otto never pushed for Aegon there would be no war. Even if Aegon was alive, as long as he didn’t want the throne, there is no war. The Targaryens have 10 dragons even if ALL the lords of Westeros were sexist and didn’t want a queen, it wouldn’t matter. That conflict would last like a week, if they tried to overthrow Rhaenyra. Along with that, Oath/ Honor is such a big thing in Westeros, majority of the lords would never want to be seen as dishonorable and would support Rhaenyra.
      As they say multiple times throughout the show, “what the people want is no consequence” THEY HAVE DRAGONS. The war is only a war because Aegon, a targaryen WITH dragons and a mother and grandfather who worked 20 years for him to take the throne.
      If Aegon had been successful and fled or went off to tell Rhaenyra, there would be no greens or war. Baratheons and Lannisters would not have risked crowning a king who doesn’t want to be king. The biggest solution was if Viserys would have kept his family together even if Alicent hated Rhaenyra, he could’ve made sure Aegon and Rhaenyra had a better relationship. However Viserys was always trying to people please, best option was Rhaenyra marry anyone either Daemon or Velaryon and have their firstborn engaged to a Martell.

    Alicent was never friends with Rhaenyra, she only used her to get closer to Viserys and once she did that she threw her away like a spoiled child abandoning her old toy because her dad bought her a new one.
    And for all those who still believe that Alicent did everything she did to protect her children, know that this is just idiocies. Alicent never cared about them they were just a means to allow Hightower's bloodline to ascend to the Iron Throne, nothing more.
    And to achieve this Alicent purposely subjected her children to repeated psychological abuse by telling them that Rheanyra would kill them to secure the throne, something she never did in the book, she says plainly.
    And the truly worst thing is that not even after Aegon III's accession to the throne was Alicent able to admit to herself that the war had been exclusively her fault, rather she tried to convince Jaehaera, a frightened and traumatized 8-year-old girl to killing Aegon III a move that makes it clear how selfish Alicent was and if it had happened she and Jaehaera would have been the first people to be suspected of Aegon iii's death and Baela and Rheana would have both had them burned alive for it.
    So Alicent no longer even cared about the fate of her last grandchild just to have the last word with Rheanyra what a pathetic woman.
    And I'm convinced that Jaehaera was happy when her grandmother died, so she could never ruin her life again.
    Alicent was a greedy and selfish woman who did nothing but blame others for her choices and who didn't even have that glimmer of dignity to end her miserable life because dying meant having to look Viserys in the eye and explain why all her children and most of his grandchildren are dead.
    Alicent never loved anyone and died alone, abandoned, forgotten and hated by all even the Hightowers repudiated her, it is no coincidence that they built a statue in honor of Daeron I the young dragon the grandson of Rheanyra rather than Aegon II or of one of his brothers I think this was the Hightowers' way of telling Alicent to go f**k himself.

Like Danaerys is a woman so “nobody supports her claim to the throne” so is Rhaynera’s claim but Cersei murders everyone and somehow she’s allowed to sit the iron throne even if just for a few. I yet can’t take it seriously, surely the man could be sexist but come on she’s a beast and rides a dragon how much more womanhood would you want in a queen.

      The only ones that they could sit on the iron throne are Robert Bartheleon’s bastard children, the possible matrilineal blackfyre descendants as the patriarchal line of the Blackfyre’s were completely destroyed, the Valyrons who have fallen on hard times since Aenys death, and Danaerys. In this case Danaerys is the only remaining direct descendant whose claim no one can dispute or challenge. That and she has three overgrown lizards if she meets a Valyron one of them could easily mount one of her dragons and could probably provide the designs or even use one of the old dragon saddles they have. The other Valyrian house that is present in westeros is not of dragonlord descent are also very wealthy merchants, despite being unable to mount a dragon themselves. If she dies the throne itself will likely go to the Valyron’s if they are ballsy enough to take it.

      its a thing among ancient royalties that GRRM applied here. The male line need to completely-die-first before the female line get a chance. Jaeherys chose Viserys instead of Rhaenys. After his wife and son died, Visery's should have named Daemon instead of Rhaenyra as heir, then wed the 2 off if he really wanted his line to continue. His solution to a problem is creating another problem by marrying another woman and fathering children that will contest his daughters claim cause he's an idiot who did not bother to change the succession law. This is why he's a weak king. He should have put laws and rules into place before naming Rhaenyra as heir so her claim is strong and valid. Example of this is Aleksander II of Russia who's children from second marriage despite having noble status is barred from succession.

    Alicent is easily the most evil character in all of the series and books. Cersei at least loved Jamie and loved her children. Alicent loves nothing. She feels for nothing. She’s purely driven by taking power. Even Tywin and really loathsome characters like him (The Mountain, Little Finger, etc) had a devotion to someone or something else that made them human. Alicent is just full fledged out for as much power as she can and the worst part is she tries to hide it as her being honorable. She destroyed Rhanera’s claim out of jealousy that her friend would be ruler and she wouldn’t. Shes disgusting.

      I don't think Alicent is entitled to the throne, she just has all these facts in front of her eyes, how could she not think Rhae capable of murdering her children after that ? She just tries her best to protect her children from the succession mess that will obviously happen

      You can see her as a traitor as you wish, but things are more complex than just "this one is wrong" or "this one is right".
      "Alicent's only point as a Queen was to harass Rhaenyra" Are you talking about the time she asked to see the baby ? Rhaenyra could have refused or waited, she just wanted to see the baby, it's not harassment.
      "She understood nothing about politics" Much more than Rhaenyra ever did if we see the alliances she tried to make after Aegon's coronation or how she handled King's Landing when her husband couldn't
      "She had years to evolve as a queen but she only upgraded Criston who abused Rhaenyra's sons" She took the King's place in the Small Council, isn't that enough of an evolution ? And no, Criston just favored Alicent's sons, he didn't abuse Rhaenyra's sons and only suggested a fight when Harwin questionned his training abilities.
      "she protected the killer of their father" Come on, who would have believed her ? She had no proof except what Larys said to her.
      "raising her rapist of a son to usurp Rhaenyra" She just told him they have to be united as a family because Rhaenyra could see him as a threat and thus being close with the children of a potential enemy is not a good idea

      @chaperonrouge8309 Lolllllll. Otto is the one who sold Alicent to Viserys lol. If anything, Alicent should be happy about him getting fired. And of course Rhaenyra had the right to be angry, anyone would have been. Also, Otto literally told Alicent that Rhaenyra would never become Queen. Alicent always knew about her father's plans, everyone knew. She was well aware that her father would make sure that Rhaenyra doesn't become Queen and she indulged him. After the death of Lyonel Strong, she gave him back the title of hand of the king. Thank you for confirming how much of a traitor she was.
      Episode 6, Lyonel Strong literally explains that Rhaenyra and the children could die especially because Alicent was so keen in exposing the children's biological father even so no-one cared.
      And No. Rhaenyra cannot just refuse anything she wants to the Queen. We saw that in episode 4 literally. So the baby had to be brought to Alicent and Rhaenyra was scared obviously because Alicent was trying to have them all killed ( episode 6 Lyonel Strong speech ). And asking to see a baby right after childbirth is just disrespectful and disgusting anyway. And she did it to pressure Rhaenyra, that disgusts me.
      And denying that Criston abused the children really ???? He literally kept asking to Aegon to hit Jacaerys even when the latest was on the floor.
      Also Alicent was useless as a Queen. She proved that in episode 6 during the council. She literally said " Let someone else deal with the conflict between the Brackens and Blackwoods " when it's literally Jahaerys who made both house stop their little feud... Alicent's words were all about letting people fight lol. And then she got angry because obvious Rhaenyra understood politics way better. Only thing she did as a Queen was to harass Rhaenyra, her children and protect her rapist of son while gaslighting his victims.
      Oh and please... She literally told him that everyone knew that someday he would become king while Aegon didn't even care lol. Nah cause team green really ignores half of the show.

      @@LolLilol-uw3ou I can't remember a single moment where Rhaenyra defended Alicent. Initially, Otto ordered Alicent to visit the king, after some time Viserys asked Alicent not to tell Rhaenyra anything about their communication. Alicent tortured her hands and worried about it. She did not betray Rhaenyra, because... didn't owe her anything. After her marriage to the king, she sincerely tried to make peace with Rhaenyra, who rejected her. The father tried to convince Alicent to turn the king against his daughter in order to put Aegon on the throne, but the girl did not do this. She didn't set up the princess. Instead, she gave political advice to Viserys, such as helping Daemon in the war. At this time, the heir to the throne was not even aware that Westeros was waging some kind of struggle. It's funny... Finally, in episode 4, the friends "made a truce." Otto denounced Rhaenyra, Viserys tried to find the culprit, but Alicent defended her friend in front of the king. She believed Rhaenyra and decided that her father had lied. As a result, she was left completely alone at court and realized that she had been deceived. The friend lies, her father covers up the adventures of the prodigal daughter, and the price of this lie is the father of Alicent herself. Despite everything, she was a faithful wife to Viserys, honestly observed all customs and orders, and took care of the king. Rhaenyra herself ruined her reputation at court when she did not even try to hide her extramarital affair and gave birth to bastards. Then she fled the castle when the gossip reached enormous proportions. Realizing that she would lose her crown very quickly, she jumped into Damon's bed on the day of his wife's funeral, a few days after the funeral of her beloved.
      When Aemond's eye was cut out, Rhaenyra accused Aemond of spreading rumors even though everyone knew the truth about the bastards. The princess knew that talking about bastards was punishable by death. And yet she blamed it on the child who was bleeding because of her son. Viserys took his daughter’s place even here, without even punishing the bastard. For Alicent this was a real betrayal. After all, the history of the past repeated itself. Otto was right. Rhaenyra could condemn Alicent's son to death, and the king would still support her.
      Further, the princess did not visit her sick father, although she knew that he was under the supervision of the Hightowers. She was too carried away by the endless birth of children, forgetting that she was actually an heiress. At this time, the Hightowers ruled the capital. In your opinion, did they do their job poorly? The country prospered, Otto gave advice to the old king, and now to Alicent. Rhaenyra didn't care much. What made her a good queen? The fact that she didn’t kill the deer in episode 3?)) But when the question arose about the inheritance of her illegitimate children, she went to the capital once again to ask for her father’s help. Together with Damon, they accused Alicent of improper care, although they themselves did nothing for him. When the daughter came to her father at night to ask for help, he called her Alicent, because it was his wife who honestly did her job all these years, served the kingdom, maintained her honor and dignity. The Queen did not try to denigrate Rhaenyra; she dealt with it without Alicent. Finally, Alicent heard the last words about Aegon and thought that Viserys had changed his mind. This was not a betrayal, but an error of interpretation. She really decided that the king wanted a different heir. She was terribly tormented by her conscience even in this situation, which suggests that she didn’t give a damn about Rhaenyra despite their painful past.

  • @felicity_rose3466
    @felicity_rose3466 6 месяцев назад +8

    Rhaenyra wasn’t exactly kind to Alicent either, don’t know why she’s so surprised.
    Also Alicent genuinely believes that Viserys wanted Aegon on the throne. She was never told about the prince who was promised. So hearing aegons name, in the same sentence of saving the realm and being king, would obviously make her believe Viserys wanted Aegon on the throne. Remember that Viserys also told her he had a dream that his son would sit on the iron throne one day during Aegons name day (in front of the fire) , he even broke down to her about how he made a mistake and the only reason he supports Rhaenyra’s claim was because he feels he killed her mother.
    Lastly: if Rhaenyra stuck to her word, she would’ve been crowned. She told Alicent she would see the children back home, and fly back on dragon back because they had just started to rekindle their friendship, yet after like a full day or two, Rhaenyra was seen chilling at home with no intention of returning to Kingslanding.

She had the right to be angry. Rhaenyra never harassed Alicent nor her children. Alicent abused Rhaenyra's children and Rhaenyra. She protected the killer of Harwin. Rhaenyra always protected Alicent, always tried to stand for peace... She went against her father and Daemon for Alicent. Rhaenyra would have made a good Queen but maybe she was too trusting.

If Alicent is any type of mother at all she will always make these decisions to protect her children.

      There is none so accursed as the kinslayer. Rhaenyra wouldn't kill her siblings just to shore up her claim. If they pledged to support her she wouldn't have touched a hair on their heads. In real life, Henry VII and Elizabeth I had to deal with this kind of thing and they tried very hard not to slay their kin.
      This rhetoric was purposefully fed to Alicent by Otto to turn her against Rhaenyra. Please take a moment to think critically here.

      @@allypally1768 If you chose to be naive and lack critical thinking that's fine but don't accuse me of it. Real people have killed their own siblings to shore up their claims to thrones but sure, a fictional character like Rhaenyra who has been shown to make countless bad decisions and show little accountability for them is suddenly above such actions lol

    • @celestielsigh
      @celestielsigh 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@allypally1768 Also the main reason Elizabeth I was truly against murdering Mary of Scots was because it meant one monarch could pass judgement on another and that she herself could be put on trial and would no longer be untouchable. Her actual siblings were already dead so she didn't have to worry about disposing of them but her own sister Mary had her imprisoned and was seriously considering executing her for much of her reign lol

    • @allypally1768
      @allypally1768 6 месяцев назад

      @@celestielsigh and why didn't her sister execute her? Because kinslaying is frowned upon. In the ASOIAF universe, kinslaying is even more serious. People accused Robb Stark of being a kinslayer for executing a Karstark. If Rhaenyra could avoid killing her family, she would. If her siblings swore fealty to her, she would've spared them. It's really that simple. Aegon offered Dragonstone to Rhaenyra to prevent her allies from fighting him and also to keep himself from being a kinslayer. If you really think Rhaenyra wouldn't do anything she could to avoid killing them you're an idiot.
