As a hunter when I'm in the woods about every 50 yards, I do a 360 degree turn around just to see what the trail looks like during a return back to the camp or vehicles. It's sounds so simple, but you'd be surprised how the scenery changes by looking at it from different angles.

I went hunting with different hunters on two occasions who both said they knew the area we were going and that I was silly for bringing my gps with me (along with a backpack of supplies). They made fun of me but I didn't care. I did not want to depend on their knowledge alone. I ended up leading both hunters (on two separate occasions) out of the forest after they were lost. One enjoyed my food I had brought also. Don't rely on senses alone and leave your arrogance at home, your life is more valuable than to make assumptions.

Also, this is why I don't go into the wilderness... I can't find my way around the block! And sadly, lol, I'm not kidding! Almost died in a car accident a few yrs back because of this. In my defense though, where I grew up "around the block" was a 3 mile trip into the back woods. My home town doesn't have a single stop light. And, the accident was in the city beside my town. Also, there was an accident in the same spot a week prior to mine, the stop sign facing me was ripped out and never replaced. I hadn't realized I was already "around the block, and instead of turning left, I went straight, and straight thru a busy intersection where I thought the other cars had the stop. I didn't realize until too late they weren't stopping. It was a month later the city acknowledged they hadn't replaced the stopped sign. I was found half at fault and also realized..... I am very very bad with directions! I also got lost in the woods behind my (parents now, but I grew up there) house as a youngin bc its just miles and miles of woods, and it all looks the same, trees, the occasional downed limb, and a random small stone wall that looks to falling a bit. I always wondered though, who put those stone walls wayyyy out there? I don't know, but I wasn't going back that far ever again to look around

  • @LaHayeSaint

It is always extremely sad when hikers don't make it back. Some issues, however, can be tackled in the planning stage:
    1. Proper use of maps and compasses and GPS. Do not just blindly follow a track. Confirm where you are and rely on your navigation.
    2. Take proper survival gear with you. That includes a tent, sleeping system, cooker, candles, torches, food, small axe, pepper spray, firearm, fire-lighting capability. If you are in a forest use dead wood. Dead wood burns, green wood is more problematic.
    3. You must tell someone when to expect you back. They can raise the alarm.
    4. Smoke grenade is useful for tracking aircraft, if you are on the move and have no fire.
    5. You must be aware of the possibility of predators and their biting characteristics. You must have a plan if surprised, eg, axe and knife at the ready. In bear country place food on rope suspended from a tree 100 m away. With wolves, build a raised platform.

Trails in a lot of lesser used areas tend to be marked horribly. Can easily get lost on many trails because of that reason. I’ve been lost . Besides hiking for a long time trying to find the way out you lose energy from the stress. I luckily hiked off mount hood and found highway 35 right before it got dark. But had we been lost after dark it could have been real bad. Always bring a small survival kit. Once I took a day hike and decided to spend the night with just my survival kit. Was wet cold couldnt get a fire going. The space blanket isn’t very warm if there’s air leaks and they barely wrap around you. The couple granola bars and water helped with slight hunger but one night was enough to tell me not to leave my car I prepared. Was very uncomfortable cold wet and did t get a wink of sleep even with a small lean to. I wouldn’t have had energy to hike around lost without sleep. Luckily I wasn’t lost and hiked the 6 miles back that morning at first light. I was worn out like I had just climbed a mountain.

Glad u made it out. I think people underestimate how quickly the effects of hunger, dehydration, hypothermia and a lack of sleep can set in and always ask why did they stop here so close to the way out??? Well they might not have known it was there, and they might not have been able to get up and move any longer.

I just recently found this. I usually keep myself informed on missing persons ever since I first read of David Paulides but somehow I missed this one. Based on the narration of this video it is definitely perplexing how the two women ended up where they did? Did they not plan out this hike? Did they not come prepared for it? Why seemingly casually wander off the beaten path in an area that had to have been completely unfamiliar to them? I can only imagine in horror the final days or hours these two must have endured before they succumbed to the elements. There just seems to be more and more of these kinds of disappearances happening these days and it begs the question why? Perhaps this is not the case and since we live in the information age we just here about it more then it was possible before. Either way it is still distressing!

@@treerat6959 I am just really clueless why these two met their demise the way they did? Their scattered remains were found near a make-shift shelter 100+ yards from a trail that would have eventually taken them back to their starting point. Why did they stop where they did? Did one of them get hurt or got sick (altitude may have factored here)? Was it getting too dark or raining too hard forcing them to seek shelter? Did something spook them to leave the trail? Were they just lost? They supposedly had matches yet there was no evidence of a fire, why?
I personally know what it is like being out in these mountains in a rain storm and given the terrain they were in they could have found plenty of dry pine needles at the base of any pine tree nearby. So, again I ask why no fire???

That is not always possible. I never park by a large vehicle such as an SUV where someone could be hiding on the other side. I remember a few trips to this area as a scout. The first trip I was around 12-13 on my first overnight backpacking trip. I remember a different group asking if we had seen someone from their group, as he was lost. Luckily after a few hours of searching and just before dark they were able to find him. The other trip I remember, well, in short it sucked. I was 14-15 and we were doing a kind of pre test, one night backpacking trip before taking a much longer one for a week later that summer. On the drive up the weather got worse and for some reason once at the trail head we decided to still go even though it was raining. I can't remember the destination or plans but I want to say that we didn't complete the entirety of our plans due to weather. Finally, being soaked and tired we set up camp. Looking and the extra reading from Mr. Cawley's backcountrypost I remember quite well the area in the picture with the caption, "An unsigned intersection on the Notch Mountain Trail leading toward Clyde Lake. Rocks lined up were the only indication of where to make the turn. (Photo: Dave Cawley)" Underneath. Even though the women in pictures are smiling I personally don't think it to be a honest example showing what they were truly thinking or feeling. Most people smile and/or pose for a picture. Personally when I was hiking in the crummy weather I didn't look up and around at the scenery much and was only thinking how wet and cold I was. We had to stop a few times to get our bearings and make sure we were heading in the right way. We'll never know the full story about these women, but given similar circumstances I can see how one could possibly get mixed up or lost in the area. Once it got dark they wouldn't of had light from stars or a moon given the weather and would be forced to stop. An unfortunate story.

So sad...but I can't understand with all the hikers that travel out into the wilderness why the trails are not marked at all or poorly marked. If the trails were marked, maybe more hikers would not get lost and perish to the elements. Great channel. I just found your channel. Thanks.

Learn to read a topographical map and never go out without a topographical map of the hiking area. The better the resolution of the map the better your chances of orienting yourself. This was mountainous terrain with streams, lakes, scree slopes, plenty of features to use for orientation. Plan your hike and study the map closely and well before you set out. Do not rely solely on trails to guide you around. If planning a new route or a route in unfamiliar terrain do a dry (mental) hike of the route the day before with the help of a topographical map. Be aware of the lay of the land across a wider area extending beyond your planned route.

Very interesting video. I heard their story before, but you tell it well. You should do more like this, with so many people that go missing in places like this...you are definitely good at it. I just hope the mom and daughter both passed in their sleep, together, so one was never knowingly without the other. And hopefully didn't suffer. Very sad story, but definitely a cautionary tale

So let me get this straight, two women died and medical examiners cannot determine a cause of death? How weird is this ? Wouldn't you think they would have either traces of an injury, or internal organ damage due to a number of causes....I have been watching many documentaries about missing people in similar circumstances and this seems to be common...Autopsy doesn't reveal any aparent cause of death...This is just very bizarre to me, it has to be some sort of cover up for something else....These medical examiners are hiding something.

That's kind of like saying you could avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by not breathing. Hypothermia slows down your respiratory system, and you become very tired and weak. They probably figured that they would shelter there till morning, then continue on their way. I'm sure that they didn't just give up, and lay down and die.

I would NEVER suggest females to hike by themselves or even worse - all alone. Hiking alone in the night is dangerous enough for a man, for a woman it gets way way worse - the male brain & the female brain work completely differently in panic mode.
The male brain gets into fight or flight mode while the female brain gets into surrender or scream for help mode. It is likely that Kim & Carole first went into scream for help mode & then into surrender (to their fate) mode - they most likely knew they were done for while huddling beside those rocks.

There's too many obvious lakes and mountains to not know where you are, even if you're not a local. Maybe whoever led them found them dead in the morning then left? Maybe see what's in that direction west, or what their heading was? Some weirdo in a hut, out in the middle of nowhere? Im reaching pretty hard here :/ or just as simple as not being versed in wayfinding. Sad, and odd.

@@PutinsMommyNeverHuggedHim Okay, since you asked politely, I will reveal that this was just inflammatory "rhetoric", constructed to get a discussion going. Then the exchange would evolve into a more nuanced interpretation. So ... I will start/finish now. Women do have a tendency to eschew "instrumentation", in my experience, and usually they can get good results. That is, so long as they stay in their "power curve" of individual performance. The problem arises when they stray out of that, something happening much more with the women-can-do-anything propaganda current, ubiquitously. News flash to a LOT of women out there ... YOU CAN'T ... , especially since most women have no concept of potential danger in strategic failings, of the nature of this video. That you are not interested to try various pursuits does not seem to dissuade the overall attitude, as there are enough near, or full, existential mistakes made to highlight the attitude that has gone astray.

Oldclimber Amb sure, women tend to be more intuitive. I’m coming from a personal perspective. My greatgrandmother and my grandmother survived in Northern Europe by cutting down her own trees, farming the land, knowing where and when and how to plant and how to interpret the weather, where to find there best mushrooms and berries in the forest, and where the best grass was for the cows. They knew when the best seasons were to sell goods at the markets, what things were worth. Their husbands were dead or imprisoned by the Soviets, so they never had a man to help them. They never used a compass or a calendar and never got lost.
My mother is a neurobiologist who switched to research, she’s a double MD PhD, makes much more money than my rheumatologist dad, and interprets brain wave data and writes research papers and runs a lab with plenty of men, who have never amounted to her intelligence.
Just a counter-point to add nuance to your statements. It’s not male vs female - it’s simply intelligence and common sense vs....lack thereof. Having a *enis doesn’t automatically grant you analytical thinking, just like not having one doesn’t automatically diminish your thought processes. My great-grandmother didn’t even go to school, but she would win at checkers and chess against all the men in her small town.
Maybe it is American females you’re referring to? In my country, we have female presidents, women were allowed to vote much earlier. Women fought in wars and some flew planes and plenty outsmarted the guerrillas in the forests. They helped build cabins and ran the markets.
I don’t know, your statement seemed ridiculous to me, knowing that two whole generations in my family survived because of our women.
My great-grandmother build a secret attic to hide her two young sons so that they wouldn’t be conscripted into war. The sons brought down gas lamps for light but she snatched them out of their hands, knowing that they’d die from air poisoning. She was a smart cookie, and lived till 95 years old, god rest her soul.
