    Never seen peony like yours....we have several peonies including Itoh in our backyard, but yours is interesting to look at...Looks like Dill from far away...😅

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hi Victor & Annie. Tree peonies have woody stems that stay above ground all year. Their leaves are deciduous and drop every fall. An intersectional peony is a cross between the tree peony and the herbaceous peony. The flowers look like those of a tree peony, but the stems die back to the ground each fall. Itoh peonies are a hybrid cross between herbaceous peonies and tree peonies, they do die back to the ground in fall like herbaceous peonies but their flower and growth characteristics are similar to tree peonies.
      When it comes to seed germination, many people don’t realize that some seeds, such as the tree peonies we grew from seed, require cold treatment (stratification) in order for them to sprout properly. In upcoming videos we will be showing some amazing blossoms.

      Hi Dawn. Actually, they're pretty easy to find online. If memory serves us correctly, we purchased our original plant from Monches Farm in Colgate, WI near Holy Hill. Unfortunately, they closed their amazing operation last summer. It was a great place to find rare plants not typically available at local garden centers.
      We're keeping a close eye on our Montauk Daisy cuttings in the Liberty garden. We will do updates on our monthly garden tour video blogs. Perhaps in another month or two, we may have some extra to share. Stay tuned.

    Hi from Oregon. Everything looks so good. I am glad you have a sunny day. It make such a difference. I really like the area you just finished with the bricks. I was wondering if deerskydd works with raccoons. I have one that comes and eats the cat food I leave for an abandoned kitty. It knocked over and dug in my seedlings I have growing. I think most will make but some are struggling. I bring them in at night. Is there an odor? Thank you. Karan

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Good morning Karan. We're sorry to hear about all the Raccoon damage. Unfortunately, your kindness for a kitten is actually attracting them to your yard. According the package claims, it includes deer, rabbits, elk, moose, chipmucks, ground squirrel, nutria, opossum and beaver. There is no mention about Raccoon on the PlantSkydd package. Our take is that this product works best with plant eaters.
      Raccoons have a very good sense of smell, and they do not like the smell of pepper. You can make a liquid pepper repellent that may keep raccoons away from your home and garden. To make the pepper repellent, get a bottle of hot sauce or a jar or can of cayenne pepper. I'm sure there are many formulas available Online.
      Cayenne pepper is one of the natural raccoon deterrents and a great way to repel critters and pests. These pesky rodents hate the smell of this homemade raccoon repellent. It makes it an effective ingredient then, in homemade animal repellent
      Depending on how you feel about preventing raccoon invasions, make sure all trash is securely protected, fence in garden areas, remove easy food sources and try to eliminate easy places for raccoons to hide.
      Professional trappers often use scent, such as Goon Dust to attract them and set out a series of traps. It doesn't take them very long to catch. What they do with them afterwards, I'd rather not know.
      We used to have a family of Raccoons living in our neighbor's tree and listen to them chatting. Since we bungee corded our trash cans, they rarely cruise our property. We do however, see scat signs near our compost bin which helps keep them easily attracted and away from our north gardens. We wish you well in lessening and perhaps eliminating attractions to your home and garden areas.
      Thank you for watching, caring and sharing. We continue to wish your family, friends and neighbors great healthy and a prolific year gardening. We look forward to all of our future comments. Your garden friends from www.WisconsinGarden.com - Lynn & Richard

    I recommend a good 2-3 inches of bark mulch under those tree peonies and a good 2 handfulls of Biotone for each also.....NO NO NO spray painted dead trees!...lol How about replacing the Japanese Maple with a purdy Pink Dogwood tree? Will we be seeing GLORIOUS Heavenly Blue Morning Glories this year?...One tip...don't fertilize too much or you get tons of leaves and few flowers...Just to let you know...

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hi Tim. We should be receiving 100 bags of Cedar mulch this coming Saturday as we've been prepping the new sun garden areas as garden rooms. We'll consider the Pink Dogwood tree after removing the Japanese Maple perhaps this fall.
      We've been reworking the Snake Willow area which you'll see in our next video this Thursday. Richard will be mainly focused on dismantling the waterfall and rebuilding it from scratch. He's not looking forward to it and most likely going to have to wait until our son Skye and his friend can carefully take it apart. Then he will begin building it bigger and better.
      We know how much you love Morning Glories and are still keeping an eye out for a possible invasion. The jury is still out as to adding more this year. This week our focus will be on planting all of our vegetables if the weather cooperates.
      Hope all is well with you. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. We wish you, your family, friends and neighbors continued great health and a prolific garden season. We look forward to all of our future chats as well. Your garden friends from www.WisconsinGarden.com - Lynn & Richard

      @@WisconsinGarden Suggestion on the water feature....to be totally honest, and my own personal opinion...after all you have to live with it...why not do something better...no wood...no maintenance...and you have to admit it is a bit of a monstrosity....i am sure you have access to rock...build a waterfall out of rock with copper or some other type of non-deteriorating plumbing and have it spill into a preform pond like you have in the back...larger of course with rock surround?...Or a beautiful concrete fountain....many on the market that would look great instead of what you have now...just a thought...i have a 3 tier 5 foot tall fiberglass fountain that looks like concrete and is easily stored away for the winter...each tier just twists on and off.....looks great and hardly any maintenance....

      I'm sure Richard is pondering other options. A neighbor installed a pond in their backyard which got the DNR involved and ended up increasing their insurance rates. I will tell Richard you offering to build it for him. I'm sure he would be thrilled. TKS Lynn & Richard

      We do enjoy the wood structure when we see children safely looking into the main section watching fish. I'm confident that whatever Richard decides to build will at least last longer than our lifetime. Eventually, the new owners can spend the big bucks and create a neighborhood water slide. We are at home celebrating this Memorial Day. Enjoy your day as well.

    The reviews of plantskydd says its stinky and stains plants red, have you had that experience with it and was it as bad as some reviewers stated? Deer in our area are hungry beasts! Thanks guys, stay safe! 🌸💐🌸

      Hi Jane. Not only deer, but rabbits, chipmunks, voles and many other critters. Since animals are scent oriented, all spray deterrents work because of odor. Yes, PlantSkydd is an earthy blood smell not quite as bad as rotten eggs and does stain the plant but lessons over time. It's not something for flowers you plan on cutting and bringing into the house. But, it has worked really well for us this year, especially for our tulips which we dearly enjoy in spring. We will continue our trial with this product next year as well for consistency.
      This is another reason we have been experimenting with Dill and squash bugs. We cut fresh dill and stick it down around the base of our squash plants and don't ever remember having a squash bug problem. While not yet scientifically proven, our opinion suggest that Dill disguise the smell of the squash plant and thus, confuse and deter them. Time will tell if our experiment is valid.
      May you have a wonderful Memorial Day as well. Thank you again for watching, caring and sharing. Hi Penny, It really is a shame losing such a beautiful tree. We were warned about their problems but thought having it grow in a protected area would be helpful. When they resided our house, we think all the foot traffic may have played a role. Now we're on the lookout for a different tree specie. Hope you have better luck with your Blood Good varieties.

    Can you grow cold weather crops, leafy greens in summer if it’s shaded?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      I'm sure one can grow most anything under the right conditions. Cold crops do really well in cold weather. Leafy greens should grow well if the spot is cooler, watered and well shaded. You'll have to give it a try and let us know what worked.

      Hi Diane. We did our best to protect our Japanese Red Maple tree by sheltering in a protected area on the north-east corner outside our kitchen window. For about a dozen years it brought us lots of joy. We knew they had a very sensitive nature but thought we'd give on a try. We will probably find a hardier tree, just as colorful.

    Are the Forget Me Nots perennial, or do they just reseed? I started some from seed but is it too late for them to bloom this year? And how appropriate that the birds started chirping when you were talking about them! 😊

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад +1

      Hi Kathy. Forget-me-nots is the state flower of Alaska and one of our favorite blue spring blanket of flowers. Depending upon the specie you have, Forget-me-nots can be grown as annuals or perennials but typically perform as biennials in most climates. Forget-me-nots typically bloom very little during their first year of growth and bloom profusely in their second spring. Ours seem to prolifically seed themselves and the birds do the rest in spreading them all around our property. Hope this was helpful.

      Hi Bozena. I think you're referring to the wild Woodland Poppies. Woodland poppies have bright yellow flowers and interesting dissected leaves. This pretty wildflower blooms from March through May. Mature celandine poppy wildflowers reach 24 inches in height and self-sow easily. The Native Americans used the yellowish-orange sap to dye baskets, fibers and as war paint. TKS Lynn & Richard

      Hi Mark. We only have a little more than 1/2 acre. It seems large because our many gardens totally surround our entire house and property. It's been said that people need 3 things in life beyond a loving relationship. 1. They need a safe and secure place to live. 2. They need a meaningful job or career that is challenging, uplifting and satisfying. 3. They need a place to escape to, a vacation spot to relax, reflect and rejuvenate. We decided to do all 3 right here on our Wisconsin Garden property and sharing it wonderful viewers like yourself. We hope you enjoyed one of our eclectic experimental gardening adventures.
