  • When we decided to portray Mary Magdalene relapsing, we knew it would be controversial and tough to watch. We also knew we had to get it right.
Dallas sits down with Ryan, our head writer, and Liz (Mary Magdalene) to discuss this important episode, including Ryan’s very personal connection to the story.

Dallas I was a meth addict 20 plus years ago. Dark, dark times, lucky to be alive and well due to incarceration and an incredible moment with my now Lord Jesus Christ . I absolutely bawled in season one when Jesus called her name. I fell apart in season two when I saw Mary fall into relapse and I saw it coming. More important bar far is the response of Jesus when he just wanted her back with him , forgiven. Why can't we just all strive to be like him . The chosen has changed my daily life . Praise the Lord and thank you Dallas

For so long I believed that I was the only Christian who went through the cycle of needing God's forgiveness. I truly thought that other Christians never made mistakes and just did perfectly by God. I slowly started to see that wasn't true but still deep down believed I was alone in it. This episode showed me that 1) I'm not alone and 2) He will always love and welcome me. It hit deep.

      .Joshua 1:9
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
      Romans 5:8
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
      1 Corinthians 13:13
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
      1 John 4:9-10
9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
      1 John 3:1
1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
      Romans 5:5
5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
      1 John 4:8
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
      1 John 4:19
19 We love because he first loved us.

Jesus Peace be upon him was a human being not a God nor the son of God, He neither said he was God nor that he came to die for the sins of the world,Salvation comes from him alone in seeking forgiveness, so when a person seeks forgiveness, he must turn to God submissively with true remorse and beg forgiveness, promising not to repeat the sin. Then and only then will sins be forgiven, so as God says: The door to forgiveness is open to anyone who seeks it and he says: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of God . Indeed,God forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

It is referring to the total solar eclipse which happened in the year 24. The number 24 in both scripture is the year. We have same total solar eclipse coming april 08 2024. If you count the total solar eclipse back which only happens every 100yrs is the yr 24. So the next 1,000 years of tribulation/plagues is .....

The scene where Mary comes back into the tent to see Jesus, and her head is bowed and she confesses that she needs forgiveness. Jesus tells her to look up in his face. That spoke volumes to me. It showed me that when I come before our Heavenly Father to confess my sins that I don’t have to come with my tail in between my legs but look into His wonderful face to receive the forgiveness and the grace that He has for me

When Jesus told Mary to look up and she says “I can’t”, the beautiful, gentle way he says “you can” just caught my heart. All the words, all the love in that scene is amazing, but just those two words crushed me(as you like to say). Because of course we all feel we can’t, not again, and He so lovingly says, you can! Again! His long suffering love is such amazing grace! Thank You, Lord Jesus. And thank you Dallas and company for portraying such truth.

@@martinkent333 it's amazing to me that a person who seems so bitter about what people believe, would go out of his way to insult people he doesn't know, on a video he had to click on to watch, which he apparently doesn't believe in. So I'm not exactly sure why you're here, nor do I understand what you hoped to achieve. But insults don't really change minds, and your "statement" wasn't even substantiated with even an offer of proof.
I'm not the best at being a peacemaker, and I struggle with not obliging people who clearly want to argue. So here's what I'll offer you: one question, that I think you should research. Does God exist? You seem so fervent in the belief that he doesn't that you choose to antagonize the people who do. Perhaps you should research that question, and let everyone else go on with their day, till you have some questions for us, or a testimony to share.. I hope that you have a blessed day, and that God might touch your heart. Happy Thanksgiving.

I agree, it shows possible scenarios and struggles that the disciples might have gone through. It’s supposed to make them more real as people with personalities that have good and bad parts to them. The purpose is not to be a verse by verse direct from Scripture telling of the story which has already been done before. I think it’s a win if it is causing people to pick up their Bible and read because the story peaks people’s interest. People always find ways to be critical just like they were when Jesus did things that were not the norm like eat with tax collectors and prostitutes or heal on the sabbath.

When I watch the chosen I personally feel so many emotions, it reaches inside me and moves me in ways that no other film or story ever has. I can admit that I have been brought to tears countless times. It is very hard for me to find the right words to describe the feelings I have for Mary throughout this journey. Hearing Mary in this interview left me speechless. I can personally relate on so many levels. When Mary says "You feel like you don't belong." she hit the bullseye. I would absolutely love to be able to meet her someday.
As someone coming from a life of addiction and a dark past the journey of recovery is continuous and humbly submitting daily before God to overcome the enemies lies and attacks is a must. I can recall many times where I felt those same exact emotions and had those same exact thoughts. Even though my life has been saved by the love and grace of Jesus Christ and I am committed to daily live for God there have been times when I have been around my brothers and sisters in Christ or at church and the enemy with all his lies has caused me to feel or even think "I don't belong here" "I'm not good enough" etc. It is in those times, that is all the opportunity the enemy needs to pounce with the overwhelming flood of the past and regrets. Mary couldn't have said it better when you instantly want to disappear, walk away, and fall back into your previous life. You feel so unworthy, like you're nobody, there is nothing good in you. Jesus Christ in his faithful love never gives up and is always there to remind you that the old is dead the new is present and in him you are a new creation with a mighty purpose.

What I was so grateful for during the whole sequence of events was the awareness of emotional tone. I felt the same fear with Mary when she saw the Soldier while she was walking alone. I felt her helplessness when the demoniac attacked the camp after she tried to interact with it. I felt her run away and felt the guilt and shame wash over her in the alley way. And I cried when she came back to embrace her Saviour who had nothing but Mercy for her. Each moment so beautifully portrayed and respectfully dealt with. This is how I know God is making this show, because there is no way all of this could translate this flawlessly over so many cultures and generations as much as it has.

As Catholics, we believe she will always lead us to Jesus, not herself, but to Jesus, our prayer, the Hail Mary says it all. Not sure the writers realised this as it wasn’t mentioned in the discussion.

@@markmoriarty7760, I think they also consulted catholic priests to give proper space and representation to Our Mother. I guess this is what The Chosen is about, ecumenical dialogue from the source, with a touch of drama and charisma, so much needed today to spread the Godspell. Definitely, I sense Scott Hahn´s work reflected in this show.

Yes. Mother Mary immediately covered Mary Magdalene w/ a head covering, restoring her dignity and making her presentable. When Mary Magdalene asked if she should wait to go see Jesus, Mother Mary said "no, I'll take you to him". That is what our Blessed Mother does. She brings us to Jesus. She urges us to go to Him immediately and to "do whatever He tells you". In the tent, Jesus tells her to look up after she has confessed her sin and repented and He simply says, "I forgive you". When watching this, I immediately thought of the Sacrament of Confession. This is precisely what Confession is all about. I was pleasantly surprised to see this in a protestant production. I hope it will help people see and understand the importance of the Catholic Sacrament of Confession which was established by Christ when He visited the Apostles after His resurrection. I think protestants lost a very necessary part of having a full relationship with Christ when they did away with the Sacrament of Confession (along with the Holy Eucharist which is the True food that gives us life - without the Eucharist, you have no life in you).

@@ritajoseph9326 Yes!!! The moment I saw that scene, I already knew it was the Sacrament of Confession and the fact that the scene happened in a tent just like how we go to a confessional box and the unveiling of our sins in that place is just so much alike with the scene. Most especially the Blessed Mother guiding us back to Jesus Her Son. Which proves “To Christ through Mary” indeed true. I’ve told this to an ex-Protestant who’ve watched this scene as a Protestant but now a Catholic and told her about watching it in a Catholic lens and she totally was shocked how her perspective of that scene changed as well. This scene is just mind blowing. Clearly the Holy Spirit is moving in this movie series.

Relapse happens! Sober here 23+ years...but I know the continued fight. I love what Jesus said to her when she apologized to him. He forgave her...but he also told her that it wasn't much of a redemption if he just tossed her aside...God never tosses anyone aside...not ever. I have been shown so much Mercy...and "I am grateful before Him" for it. But for the Grace of God there go I.

It is very important to pay attention to the distinction that Ryan makes between abstinence and sobriety. You can stop acting out with your drug of choice but still be acting out in a dozen other ways. It's called being a dry drunk. You're still self-medicating only with different mechanisms, many of which are technically "good" but are keeping you from addressing your pain in a truthful and healthy way. Ryan's story is a real and brutal example of Jesus' illustration of the evil spirit who is driven out of a person but nothing lasting is put in the spirit's place. When the spirit returns and finds the person empty, it invites several of its buddies to join it inside the person! This is exactly what Ryan felt when he relapsed after 8 years. He was immediately worse than he'd ever been before. You are powerless against addiction on your own. You have to fill the empty space with God's truth, beauty, grace, structure, forgiveness, communication, and accountability.

I love Elizabeth's portrayal of Mary. Episode 1 and I was hooked. I also was delivered from many spirits of drugs and others, that drugs were the least of. I studied the Bible for 7 years, learning about God and applying His word to my life continuing in my sinful practices. Yet, through the application of His word I found Him to be true. He delivered me completely in Sept. 2006 while I sat in the queen's chair in the drug house. I knew at 4 pm that day I was done, PTL! I recently celebrated 15 years clean and sober. I also have been a full-time volunteer with Friend Ships in Louisiana for 11 years. This is a faith-based organization that serves God. I thought I was living life on the edge in the old life, which I liked but now I serve Him in many situations and live the best life ever. Thank you Jesus and thank you Chosen. I also have sent your DVDs and t-shirts to friends to get the gospel out there. I must have watched season 1, all episodes, 15 times and continue with season 2. Thank you for streaming and having it be free because only through Jesus are we free.

Another WOW. Thanks for sharing the creative process with us--your audience. The process of creating a Jesus series is fascinating, and so is this content of relapse, backsliding, and seeing how demonization also works. Between the world, the flesh and the devil, there are so many opportunities to slide in our walk with Christ. Getting saved is one thing, but walking the Christian life has land mines, enemies that resurface, weaknesses in our character that must be dealt with, and always the testing of our hearts as to where we stand with our redeemer and King. The way God weaves all of you--the creators of this series--to glorify our God-- is beyond beautiful.

At first when watching this series I became annoyed that things weren’t lining up with scripture. But I’ve come to appreciate the direction these episodes are taking. We don’t know that Mary went back to her old ways but I like how that was added because we know that Christians aren’t perfect and we still sin at times. Whether it’s sins of commission or omission we are still forgiven and Jesus is always there. He will never leave or forsake anyone. That’s the love of Christ. ❤️

The scene of Mary Magdalene coming back to Jesus is one of the most emotional and heart wrenching scenes. I would say it would be a very true scenario even though it's not mentioned in the Bible. How many people who were mired in sin have relapsed? And then found God's mercy again? I loved this scene. Well written, beautiful acted out! Hits people in the heart who have had similar things happen to them. The stories of Jesus are vast and I'm sure not all have been written down. Triggers are very real. We are not without temptation because we are not perfect. God's mercy and grace are infinite. We are human. Mary was human. God is our Father, Jesus is our Saviour and the Holy Spirit is our Guide.
The Chosen is the best series on the life, times and possible times of Jesus I have ever seen! Well done all the cast and crew, writers, producers, any one involved. Can't wait for the next season. We really need it right now.

    - If The Chosen isn't being inspired by the Spirit, I don't know what could be. So many people from several denominations and belief systems are being tremendously impacted by the show. It's being a humongous tsunami of grace all around.
    - Would it be possible to have Elizabeth Tabish maybe co-writing or co-directing an episode at some point down the road? I know she's also a cool writer and director, so it could be pretty interesting to have her running the show alongside Dallas for one special episode.

Two sections of the Word comes to mind with this "relapse." "Behold, old things pass away and all things become new." Some believe this section of scripture tells us that Repentance brings an instant new life, without sin, others believe that the original language properly translated would have said: "Behold old things begin to pass away and all things begin the process of renewal." So some church groups will expect near sinless lives from early believers and others will allow endless relapses.
One of the reasons I know that the move from "old to new" is a process, is because Mt 18:15 tells us how to handle a "brother." "Brothers" can't trespass against you, or need booted from the church if "old to new" was not mostly a process.
I believe there comes a time when Heb 6:4-6 will be applied. "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame."
For it is impossible.... to renew them again unto repentance is what it is telling us. The long clause in the middle of this impossibility is the list of conditions to be forever rejected. I use this section of Hebrews to show to all those that believe that they have been rejected by God. I ask them if they did all the conditions. Some will say yes, so let me go back to my sin. Then I ask them if anyone ever warned them about Heb 6:4. And they say no. So I tell them that they can come back because they were not warned.
Endless relapses are serious business. The saddest part is those that relapse to the cookies and ice-cream have become a part of the strongest "stronghold" in the body. How can a person drunk come to church? Some do. How can a person high on sugar come to church? There is probably another "fix" waiting on them in the lobby. All who turn to the bottle are not at ease during the sermon. Almost all who are 25, 50, 100, 200 lbs overweight are sitting at ease around many others at ease with the lack of ease causing the overweight person to go to the cookies and leave God out.
There was an add campaign years ago: "Friends don't let friends drive drunk." We need an ad campaign in most of the churches. "Friends don't let friends eat when they don't need food." Obesity is killing many more than drunk drivers ever will. In fact many are killed on our roads by blood sugar issues that will never be on record. When will we have officers with the new blood sugar testers that don't require a finger stick"

Mary I am sorry i do not know your real name ( at this moment) I thank you for working so hard on your character and I pray for you in this work and in your life. ( As well as the whole cast and crew ) Amen. Joe

Know who you are and Whose you are will make a huge difference. Yes we fall but as Proverbs 24:16 says For a righteous man/woman may fall seven times and rise again, But the wicked fall by calamity. You see many of us have a distorted view of our value. We don't realize just how much Jesus loves us and considers us worthy to be called sons and daughters of God. He paid our complete ransom with His blood and wants His family home. Satan wants to throw guilt and shame as he did with our first parents Adam and Eve. He wants to rob us of our identity. But praise God Jesus has redeemed us in His identity. Lean on His everlasting arms. We are almost home. Keep getting up. Thank you Elizabeth for playing such a vulnerable role. Watching this particular episode made me so proud that finally Christians are breaking the silence that we are not perfect but we are on the journey to perfection. Thank you for portraying our struggles in such a powerful and tangible way that broke the noose that Satan has over God's children. God bless you and may many stars be in your crown and that crown we will all one day lay at Jesus feet.

To think anyone has the strength to never sin again, even after bring touched by Christ is hard to imagine. Mankind has a sinful nature, so i believe its very possible Mary could have backslid even after her healing, as she was still an ordinary human being.

According to the Scriptures, born again believers still sin. We don't get rid of our sinful nature until we die and get our new glorified bodies. But I'm finding that the more time I spend in the Word and fellowship with the Lord, the less I want to sin and the more I want to please Him.

@@kathierouse5306 According to scripture there is no such thing as sinful nature. When someone sins it's only because he choses to sin.

Yes, that’s the first thing I thought and said was that Mary relapsed. I love how your making everyone so real and with full human flaws that are very real.

Will The Chosen portray Mary Magdalene as the woman caught in adultery and was brought to Jesus to be punished by stoning (John 8:1-11), in future seasons and episodes? That would be amazing!

Uh, no. Different person. Also, Mary screwing up that bad AGAIN would be dumb at this point. Also, why on earth would somebody who is portrayed as a traumatized rape victim choose to do that?
Personally, I hope they cast Gina Carano in that role, to really drive home the message of that story.
