Leona is indeed from the King of Fighters series with KoF '96 being her first appearance ever. She's canonically a member of the Ikari Warriors with Ralf and Clark, and her attacks in Metal Slug XX are references to her KoF moveset! (Same with Ralf and Clark's unique attacks.)
The arabic writings in mission 1 in Metal Slug two are hilarious, some just say "supermarket" "bakery" "danger" but some are very weird, like "silly war" "house with no work" "i have diarrhea" " i need medicine" "food poisoning restaurant " and "sometimes cheap all times expensive "

There are lore videos out there for metal slug, without watching a lore video though as far as the story goes your guess is as good as mine also in Metal slug 3 there's a small chance you'll save a POW and their name will be Joestar The Iron Lizard weapon is also a direct reference Lupin the III part 2, an episode where weapons are used that are called Iron Lizards and look almost the exact same as the ones in metal slug there's also a hint of the aliens at the end of the first game where General Morden looks up at the sky and you see a bunch of stars appearing from out of nowhere
That's a pretty cool little detail about the iron lizard, did not know that. Part of me feels like the lack of exposition in the metal slug games almost adds to the charm. thanks for watching!
