  • The four track cut through Pittsburgh's West Park in the Allegheny Commons on the North Shore offers a unique vantage point for railfans. Located just west of the split between the Pittsburgh Line and the Conemaugh Line, West Park sees heavy traffic daily. Additionally, the Island Avenue Yard is located directly west of the park, and Allegheny Valley Railroad train movements are a common sight.
Our day consisted of a parade of eastbound trains. First we see a manifest freight, followed by a long AVR train departing Island Avenue. Last we see a train of empty gondolas.
Although fall foliage was in bloom throughout the region, the parks Ginko trees stubbornly remained green. Apparently they don't turn their bright yellow color until Halloween. Oh well, there's always next year!
Filmed in RAW format with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, Metabones Speedbooster, and a Canon 24-105mm f/4.0 lens.

We call that spot "The Pit." Seen my first Heritage Unit, The Wabash, here. I was so 😁 excited. You see so much action come through here. This is also the beginning of NS Conemaugh Line. Pretty much. Soon as they get on the other side the inner tracks go under while the outer two head up- across the river and through downtown.
