How to make a vocal booth on a budget.
Hey audio friends! Check out my new album, produced in my home studio. It's not generic garbage, trust me. I think you'll like it: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cthreep/karma-harm
Who saw Travis Doing this in the Netflix Documentary
bro i was just gonna say this 😂
exactly i had to research why i seen him doing that 😭😭
Yupp
Lmao on god
Fk ya, Lmao, that some real sht right there.
Every soundcloud rapper better be taking notes rn
Haha, nice
It does work. The only problem is that every time you move, the rustling sound gets picked up by the mic. Also, it gets way too hot and uncomfortable to do any recordings more than a few seconds long. The best way is to make a blanket fort/den. Also use thicker blankets that absorb more sound.
I knew there was a practical reason I wanted to build blanket forts as a kid
haha. well, i guess you're right. i was just considering this method just for now before i come up with a better idea) maybe still better than nothing 🤣
the blanket actually works!!!!:)
hahaha , he is crazy but IT WORKS
Kingdom Songwriting I Just Hung Some Blankets From My Ceiling.
Yea it fr does u just gotta put up w the blanket But the sound difference is worth it
Yes
I am swetting ☹️☹️😟😟 Do anyone have any idea for it?
That ending was the best part! lol
I'm going to try this soon, hope my nephews and nieces don't think im a singing ghost.
+Lee Roy Gonzalez Haha, I can picture the look on my nieces and nephews' faces if they came into the room while I was singing under a blanket. That's a memory they'd never forget.
HAHA
Hahahha
Hey. NYC home studio guy here. My awesome little setup is in a 350 square foot studio apartment and space is right. I'd heard people talk about using a quilt over the top of your head to deaden the sound and it just sounded so silly to me and I never tried it until I saw your video or should I say heard. I just set up for an acoustic guitar track and I used mic stands to support the quilt so it's not dangling on the strings or the microphone or my hands. The difference was stunning, it really really worked. You have to spend a little bit of time setting up the quilt so that you're not interfering with play or vocals. But otherwise it's very cool.
I cant believe you just saved me from spending thousands of dollars in insulation stuff. RESPECC
Yeah but it sounds amazingly professional with the blanket over your head! Bravo!
Oh I’m definitely doing this!
Just make some frame to hold the blanket up for you if you want to use this more than one time
It could be done really cheap and doesn't take much room if you construct it with poles/rods that are attachable for a frame and detachable for storing it
I am thinking of holding an umbrella ☂️ and throw the blanket on top of it. Quick solution lol
PVC pipes could probably work for a dismountable frame.
@@smaklilu90 A couple of clothes rails might be easier
You're teaching people how to make non lo fi home recordings, that's awesome
+smiileyfase Thanks for thinking it's awesome. At least someone does :)
Thank you for this video! it was helpful mainly in making me feel less stupid about building a blanket fort under my bed for recording voice overs!
Wow, just that blanket makes such a dramatic difference. I’m very very impressed
To those who apparently don't have good speakers to listen to: This is NOT a good way of doing things. You can hear how he destroys his tone while under the blanket. It completely FUCKS UP the frequency spectrum in a major way that you cannot undo later in the mix. I tried to undo a bad case of that myself, and although I could fix 80% of the issues, even after having the track sent to a top of the line mastering house, the vocal take was pretty bad in certain frequencies, and the mastering engineers told me there was nothing that could be done to save it. Seriously, invest - if not money - then at least knowlege into your vocal booth design. This is a cool and ok way of doing things if you are doing a voice over for a school project or is doing some mumble rap on a 5 dollar condenser mic, but if you are trying to get a good vocal take with a good microphone, then please never do this, it will cause you some major amount of grief, speaking from experience :)
Good thing I basically make that point at the end of the video, eh?
@@cThreep I just watched the video again, and I can't see you making that point anywhere. The only thing I could hear you say was that is was impractical having to hold the blanket up while singing, but that it does work. But my point wasn't that it was inpractical, my point was that it doesn't work.
Had to learn about small square spaces the hardway myself. My eq cuts looked like craters, lol.
Creative, cheap great idea presented in an hillarious way!Awesome
From what I heard, you can try a combination of mike stands, thick blankets and towels. I heard it takes a lot of trial and error, but I'm sure we can find ways to make it work.
This really helps out for my future project, thank you!
This is what I've been looking for. I've been thinking about should I getting acoustic treatment panels and what not (For voice recording). And then I saw this video and thought... I can do something like that. Thanks!
Going to try this with ALOT of blankets and some PVC...I hope it works.
Thanks!
+Eddiethatvoguy That should work :)
I am swetting ☹️☹️😟😟 Do anyone have any idea for it?
What type of blankets are you using right now?
@@johnlexterrosales143 I moved the booth to the closet, but I still use comforter type blankets.
@@eddiethatvoguy7901 Do you think a regular fleece blanket would work too. Planning to 3 pcs of it since a comforter is much expensive.
Love it, man. STILL RELEVANT!!!
you could easily build a frame from wood or even just tent poles to hold the cover. could even staple a couple covers to the frame and then put wood panels over the top to make it look more like a normal booth
Haha! Write SOUNDBOOTH on it and sell it for hundreds of dollars
This is what I have to do for work currently. 🤣 I need a dead room! I think it will happen eventually.
Wow big difference. I thought I needed to sound treat my room but maybe it's more for bass and I just plug in my bass directly.
I’m just trying to get my room to the point where no one else in the house can hear me 😔
That's a great verse you should be a song writer! Great Video!
Yeah man, I love, quick, to the point. and save me so much time.
bwahahah that ending, I wasn't ready for this
bud just plain awsome im speechless
+iDylan Gaming Channel C'mon, this video wasn't _that_ cool.
C-Threep Music o
Mae the fuck. I FEEL HUMILIATED.
Tech Warrior to the 7eleven on Earth is safe.
i've done this too or should i say tried it before. Good vid made me smile
I used furniture blankets, worked very well
Nice vid bro! Short ane simple, I appreciate it
Thanks, might try that! All the "cheap diy mic booth" videos, might end up expensive here in Denmark, like most other "cheap diy" videos, it sucks! :P
I have a stationary computer and 4 budgies in the room, so can't really get away from them, for the things I'm planning, and I kinda can't build an ekstra room around my computer setup, in the middle of my apartment, haha. x'D
Next step; finding a way to get the budgies to be most quiet. Possibly by stuffing the cage with parsley. Lol.
The ending is everything lol
I loved the ending!
Good video, right on up to the disturbing end.
It is much better with reverberation, but comb filtering is going crazy.
Could you explain this?
@@airbourne145 I personally hate the room reverberation in my vocal recordings so I tried almost everything when I am not in the studio but somewhere where I can not control the reverberation. My first choice was this, the blanket. Then I tried some closet with clothes inside, then I recorded in my car. All those reduced the reverberation significantly, however in all cases there was a lot of comb filtering happening which is audible all the time and it sounds horrible while reverberation can be covered with some reverb. Not perfect, also the room colours your voice a lot, but it is better than comb filtering.
Unfortunately there is no other solution to treated room, as it should be large enough not to create all sorts of phase issues, which vocal boots and solutions like this always give.
@@BojanBojovic Wow interesting thank you for your knowledge
Can a blanket work as pop filter?!!!!!! I recently used a scarf as a pop filter!!!!
Yeah I bet that would totally work. Though a blanket would muffle your voice quite a bit.
im thinking..tape an umbrella to a mic stand, drape the blanket over the umbrella, step-in
if you're using a boom arm i dont think that'd work unfortunately.
LMFAO GOOD IDEA
Great idea
I use a tripod to hold up pop filter and Blanket, I dont have to hold it up, I just have a weird looking desk
it feels like we forgot everything
Ill actually gonna do it
i once wrapped my entire head around a huge thick blanket that i had. i was angry, and i screamed loudly. nobody heard shit lol
I bought some acoustic foam it's like 25 bucks for 24 pads, if u want the link I can give it to u.
+xliam127x Yeah, please send the link! I found a pretty good deal a while back too, but haven't put the pads on my wall yet. Waiting til I have my own studio room.
Thank you!
xliam127x I like the blanket idea. :D
1 dollar = * 6 or 7 danish money.
25 dollars * 6 = a lot xD haha
send me this link broo
In summer it's nightmare
s there anything that can hold the blankets. Also what if you have no choice but to sit?
i made myself a mattress and blankets fort and i called it a “singing booth” it works but yes it also involves sitting down😅😅
What an idea man😃😃😍😍😍
Shits about to get real
Solid. What type of blanket would you say is best? Cloth? Down?
Wool
using a sytheric beedsheet blacked set up. sound ok... wonder what an expert would think of the sound.
it works but it barely gets rid of background noise.
Thanks for the advice, but does the type of fabric/material in the blanket make a difference? I record in a wooden shed (so conditions would be poor) but with 2 polyester fleece blankets over me, and there is a difference, but would there be an even bigger improvement by any chance, with a different material blanket?
+Just Morton The thicker the blanket, the more sound dampening will occur. But even a pretty thin blanket will get the job done just fine.
Okay, mine should be pretty good then, thanks for the response!
How is the blue yeti for recording vocals
You guys worry about reverberation ?, my room does a hissing sound everytime i try to record
Omg the ending tho 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hey. Amazing video as always :)
Can you make a video about how to make/edit/record your voice like podcast voice. I mean deep, bassy etc. I know its not your interest but I couldnt find good videos about this and this is really important. Can you please make one? :)
ummm.. aaaand that's it. Bye. lol
+Rogos EU I think I can whip something up :) Good suggestion.
what was up with that ending? haha funny stuff
nice bkanket!
Frogs rule.
who saw taylor swift doing this in folklore long pond sessions
The bomb!!!!
Ha! Thanks for this video That is informative and funny :)
lol this is a pretty good idea tbh lol. But not if ur a bit weak in the arms haha lol
I dont understand. What does this do?
well what im just doing is that i made a skeleton out of pvc pipe, and just draped the blankets all over it
do the blankets absorb low frequencies? like 100-300
Nope, it enhances them beyond belief. When under a blanket, all you get is low mids pretty much, and it will ruin your vocal take just as it ruined his in this video. Don't do it if you are working on a serious project, only if messing around with things you'll never release.
@@michaelcaplin8969 thank you 😊
@@dav.e4410 No worries, it royaly screwed me over on a project where I had to record in a bad room and did it. 5k microphone and great voice, but not even one of the more expensive mastering houses in Europe could fix it, so I really recommend just building a really good, cuper cheap setup with thick rockwool panels you can make yourself, or rent a professional room, even if it does cost some money. The material will be out for decades once released, so better to spend a few extra quid on making it really spectacular than get under a blanket and regret it forever :)
@@michaelcaplin8969 u can lokey eq it out
@@prod.kulturedakid7157 I think you need to read his comments again lol. You can't fix all of it in post, so the better your recordings are to begin with the better the end result will be.
how decent is this for soundproofing? I just want to be able to sing loud without annoying the neighbours.. If i try this would it keep a lot of the sound inside the quilt?
Yes it will keep most of the sound in the quilt but have you ever thought of killing your neighbours? That would be more comfortable.
LOL
This is to reduce reflections and natural reverb. Your neighbors are likely to hear you if you live in an apartment
@@bmaier490 damn😣 i want to record rap music but i rap loudly
Omar JR lmao! Wym?
Didnt see a major diff did anybody else?
There Is A Decent Difference.
I am swetting ☹️☹️😟😟 Do anyone have any idea for it?
Fucking gold
Can't tell the difference. Your room didn't have much reverb anyway.
Just get a chair or two.
Frogs!
Yoo
Make a cheap pvc pipe tent.
NOW THIS IS CHEAP! HELL YES.
You know it!
I couldn't stop laughing for 10 minutes... a fanny video! thanks a lot.
I think at this time the blanket will protect you100% from covid 19 if you want to visit your neighbors:)
Lol I suggested this
Beautiful voice. You should always sing.
Or you can build an estructure to hold the blanket so you don't get tired :)
+alexdigimate You probably can. Or just pin the blanket up to the wall somehow and have it hang down....it's worth experimenting.
+C-Threep Yep, I thought that too. Maybe I'll do it :)
Hilarious!!! 😁
haha

Be sure to sing with your mouth as wide as possible, y'know, like a frog.
