How to Manage Paranoia | Advice Series

  • We are starting a new advice segment responding to questions or scenarios submitted by our viewers. In this video, I respond to this submission:
“Do you have any recommendations on how to deal with paranoia? I cannot shake the notion that my partner and my psychiatrist are spying on me and are secretly seething mad at me. I am terrified at what they might do. What can I do to make this better?”
I provide my own experience with this as well as advice I've learned from trying to navigate it myself.
I have a background as a social worker and of course have my own experience navigating living with schizoaffective disorder. In these segments I try to bridge together these two perspectives. However I am not a medical practitioner so all advice is purely based off my own experiences and should not be taken as medical advice.
If you would like to submit your own question or scenario for advice, please email a few lines to lwwsadvice@gmail.com

Anxiety and paranoia is just something that kept us alive back when we first romed the earth....now we live in a world too easy it creates more problems. Hard times create hard people, hard people create easy times, easy times make soft people. Wherever you focus your energy is exactly where your thoughts will go.
The thing that helps me the most is staying in the moment and just dealing with whats infront of me....stop trying to control things you cant touch...emrace your feelings and make solutions not problems ..... Train your brain! Work out, eat healthy, stay put your head and in the moment, surrpund yourself with positive energy and understand the storm cant last forever hard times dont last only hard people.... You decide weather you want to suffer or evolve.

    Paranoia literally sucks 😑
I remember when my paranoia was on peek, I won't even trust my own parents. Always thought they had an ulterior motive behind everything. Which sucked cause your parents are supposed to be the ones you can trust the most, so I felt so alone and lonely all the time.

That happened to me too two years ago I had a mental breakdown (psychosis episode) and thought my family was conspiring to drawn me. I believe that delusion was build because of family disfunction and years of of having to coupe with that. They didn't know how to handle the situation and I mean we all do what we can. After this event I ended felling very angry with my family and society in general. And now I'm trying to build compassion for those that don't understand how the others are suffering, I feel that is the best I can do as a human being. Love is always at the end of the tunnel.

It is hell for the family as well, you get little support, emotionally and financially it is very draining and at the same time you have to deal with your own issues. Sometimes you pay a tone of money just for a doctor to tell you shit you already knew, that doesnt help anyone involved and then they just give you a subscription to drugs u can hardly afford that may or may not work while the person you are trying to help may or may not accuse you of something depending on the day. Then sometimes you drink too much to coupe with it all and then you think would it be easier just to end it all but then you realize you cant because you have someone else that relies on you.

It’s strangely comforting to feel I’m not alone in having paranoid delusions. I have major depression disorder. Even when I’m not in a psychotic type state I still get paranoid at work that people are talking about me all the time and planning on firing me. It helps me to keep busy; I just wrote an essay about my cat, while at work yesterday and that kept my mind occupied on a slow day. It helps me to “reality check” with my partner (I’m lucky I don’t often get paranoid of him).

My daughter will be 30 this month & has lost a decade of her life already to mental illness has been diagnosed as schizoaffective, but she believes she is more of a paranoid schizophrenic which may be a perceptive insight by her into her condition. She is in a mental healthcare facility and does well for a long time until paranoia takes over and destroys her progress. In the coming weeks decisions will be made concerning if it looks like she will ever be able to live on her own again. The thing is that she likes where she is at now, but can't stay because it is not a long-term facility, because she feels "safe" there.

Even on my best days I still really struggle with thinking that coworkers, neighbours, etc are talking behind my back or looking sideways at me. If someone I know even brushes me off or doesn’t return a txt I will have intense anxiety and obsess about it until I talk to them next and confirm that they don’t hate me/mad at me. And even though thought broadcasting for the most part isn’t a symptom I have I still somehow believe people hate me or know that I thought something bad about them

I was so touched by you describing your therapist pickicking up on your paranoia and asking that person to move places. They were really attuned to you, cared what you were feeling, gave you space and opportunity to calm yourself. Nobody did that for me, when I was suffering from paranoia. Nobody cared at all. They just forced me to take the medication, forced me to go to the hospital, they used force under a smallest pretence, without caring how I must have felt, like I was an animal that one cannot talk to and be understood. Nobody even tried asking me, nobody cared I must feel extremely anxious, nobody tried anything gentle at all before overpowering me with force. I hope one day I will have a chance to lay my vengeance upon them. I hope they will suffer as I suffered. Dreams of vengeance, that's all I have left. Schizophrenia too away almost everything from me. Evil people took the rest.

It's not a good idea with schizophrenia. Since its genetic also one time she was in a psychiatric hospital photograph was taken. They don't allow that in Canada or 🇦🇺. She also talk about smoking cannabis. It's a No-No with schizophrenia. Her stories don't add up. I believe that she's done a lot of research on schizophrenia. Just capitalizing on this. Always remember she says consider supporting me on patreon. Again I believe that she is malingering and she's in this for the money. There is definitely other people talking about schizophrenia besides her I personally suffer with schizophrenia. Nothing she says adds up.👎

Hmm idk I feel like that can be a dangerous thing to tell people who suffer from psychosis. When my mom thought she caused 9/11, there was no element of truth to that delusion. Some delusions do come out of nowhere and those experiences are valid. However I agree that paranoia can develop from truths. For instance, my mom could sense when I was mad but trying to hold it in, not talk about it. Her paranoia turned this real observation into a belief that I was being paid to be passive aggressive. She picked up on a real tension but no the CIA wasn’t paying me to be a bitchy teenager

    • @stoneyvowell1239
      @stoneyvowell1239 2 года назад

@@huu5807 what was the trigger for thinking that she caused 9/11? Just like the other example you gave there was a specific trigger based on a thought, and the thought was based on a Feeling which came from something that she perceived. Something in the real world happened that triggered the feeling and the thought to be twisted. That's why it's a thought disorder. Real-world events get twisted into something else that neurotypical people just can't connect the dots to, even if it is weird associations. We can't see what's going on in people's heads so we try to make the best sense of it we can. And sometimes invalidating somebody's words when they're opening up can be even more dangerous when what they're opening up about may not be as severe/ as big as what you're thinking. Maybe when she says she caused 9/11 you could be thinking something like she was one of the terrorists on the plane, and she could just be thinking that she gave terrorist information or something smaller that just help things add up to 911.
Or to give a personal example: sometimes I think I shot somebody. The possibility is there, because one time at one of the shooting ranges I had a couple of bullets that did not hit the berm at the back of the range. A couple of days later I heard a news story about a farmer getting shot while he was working on his tractor. At first glance you wouldn't think the two would be connected. Upon further research, that farmers Farm was directly behind the range. So the possibility that I shot somebody is very real.

Oh man. I once was convinced that my husband was conspiring with my dad about me behind my back. I found out that, in this instance, they actually were. They were because I wasn't doing well and they were working out how to get me some help. The realization that they were meeting behind my back is what tipped me over into psychosis and sent me to the hospital. When my husband dropped me off he said "take care of yourself" and it just sounded like something you say to someone when you leave them for good. He left as the ER sent me to an in-network hospital in the back of a police squad car. So I traveled in handcuffs in the back of a squad car to a hospital in an urban center that I had never been to before. I had always been to a different hospital where they knew me from frequent visits and were very kind and understanding. This new hospital was in an urban center, and was horribly under-funded and under-staffed. Every other patient was in for drug-induced psychosis and detox, and upon arrival they strip searched me (this was so terrifying as I was admitted with paranoia and extreme fear). On the first day, I left my water cup sitting out unattended and then became too fearful to drink from it once it was unattended. They told me, "too bad, if you left it unattended then we won't get you another, you can drink from that one or none at all." There was frequently urine on the community bathroom floor that was rarely cleaned up. When I left I went to the community health center for a hepatitis test. I refuse to report or complain officially because I know it was a funding/staffing issue that wasn't anyone's direct fault.

I’m schizo affective and I guess I could say in remission from paranoia and persecution . I’m just on 2 mg Abilify I use to take a second antipsychotic for paranoia but not any more. I guess I can thank my psychiatrist of 25 years for her commitment to me to help me discern between delusions and reality . Keep taking the right medications and stay in therapy with someone you can trust. All the best

Paranoia is very stressful idk who to trust these days. I can't even go outside somedays unless I am with somebody. That feeling of people's presents and feel like they have an alternative purpose watching you is very unsettling. Too scared to see Dr's and think my partner is an imposter and always up to something to make me uncomfortable. Every plane helicopter that Flys over I feel uneasy and look up. It's to the point I dont want to be here. How does one get help if its too much to deal with?

Doing the Wim Hof Method has massively helped me over the last 4 months. Not only does it give temporary relief from paranoid ruminating it also helps to release feel good chemicals naturally and lowers stress levels. All for free. The interview with Novak Djokovic was good enough validation for me to commit, research loads more, buy books on the subject etc. Hope it helps - ruclips.net/video/tnuW6Xn2ChA/видео.html&ab_channel=WimHof

Focus on some other things and thus distract yourself away from it. Do this everytime when you feel like absorbed in not useful things. In simple terms ignore it and refocus your energy, thoughts on some useful things instead.

I agree --- this is a crucial issue for me, too. I wonder if you've done any research or come across any tools for people with psychotic conditions who live alone? I live alone in the country, and when I get paranoid, it can go on for months before I realize what's going on, especially if I'm between therapists. Do you have any thoughts on managing this kind of thing totally by yourself?

I feel your pain. I pray to Jesus and ask Him to show me the truth. This may take a while because we live in a fallen world. I guess we will have to run its course before we "wake" up. It's tricky as I have to remind myself that God knows I have auditory hallucination so He wouldn't talk to me (to create confusion).

We are lied to all the time. It is normal to react this way. Sometimes it's only a feeling of discomfort in your body or it can be totally debilitating and ruin your life. It all depends on how deep the lie is in your psyche. Good luck to you all.

Does anyone else struggle with paranoia of their partner cheating? I completely trust my partner and I never worry about infidelity normally but sometimes when my paranoia acts up, I get really scared about it. I try to bring it up in a healthy way by just asking him questions about it and how he’s feeling but I still don’t think that’s the best way of handling it.

    • @Fortuna808
      @Fortuna808 2 года назад +4

My husband gets paranoid about this quite often and as his spouse the way i try to deal with this is by clearly telling him I'm not cheating and then resisting the urge to get insulted about the accusation, but instead lead the conversation towards his feelings. So if I'm sensing that he is worried about it, i might ask him to talk about why he's worried and then try to validate his feelings and I also reassure him that I'm not cheating. It takes a lot of patience. On my husband's end (and your end, as the person who is experiencing the paranoia), i think it's important to open up about your feelings fully to your partner so they can understand and see you are willing to talk it through, so that will hopefully lead to a more calm communication overall (as opposed to conflict)

My dad did this constantly with my mom. He was told over and over how these cheating situations were not possible and never could accept it was paranoia. She should have got away from him because she herself had a mental breakdown!
The best thing you are doing is acknowledging you are paranoid! This is how you are helping yourself!

@@robinmarks5638 although probably an unpopular opinion, I think being in a marriage or romantic relationship with someone who has schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder is too much for the average person to handle. I would not want to raise a child with someone who has paranoid schizophrenia and I wouldn't feel capable of dealing with a partner with this type of pervasive mental illness. I'm not saying that people with schizophrenia shouldn't have relationships, but it takes a very special person to have a successful relationship with someone who has this disorder. Most people know very little about it and therefore do not fully comprehend what they are entering into when they start a relationship with someone who has this illness.

often when i lay down i cover my eyes with a tshirt to sleep without disturbance.
as i lay down and cover my eyes i can see visual hallucinations which are quite artistic and pleasing.
last time i seen japanese performers and then also girl performer and also robots which were quite adorably designed.
then i was talking to the robots that i want to see Bruce Lee because He is going to be fit with the really composition which we have together with some people. The really itself can be made artificially via molecular mixing not boiling and it can happen on a tree as a fruit grown just like that and later the fillings grown on the tree can be taken out of the leafletpocket and put into eggshells and boilfryed or so for taste.
But as people with really and as or with parts of the really we are fit into a helicopter crew who hunts using a helicopter and light weapons. we hunt people sometimes.
The robots were showing to me images thats what i get out of it.
Or i hallucinated in accordance with covering my eyes and during sometimes observing details of objects (ever since i have dreams with aliens other then the greys)

These are essentially tormenting spirits. We have the authority to bind these spirits up and cast them out based on the Word of God and in the name of the Lord. These types of spirits work in clusters and the reason why people experience the same issues - fear, rejection, depression, isolation, rebellion, lust, anger, suicide, fantasies, and delusions. Paul was struck down with these spirits on the road to Damascus. Frank Hammond has some great books that explain the issues and solutions.
