    Couldn't agree more Robert. So important that these 3 things are solid. As my Collie is my Assistance/Service dog she has been taught food refusal,she won't even take water poured by another person. My only concern is if something happened to me she would not eat or drink. I have done all her training as I do with all my Assistance/Service dogs.Thank you : ) Goofy is very well trained and all yours and Janet's dogs are a credit to the amount of work you both put in. : ) So lovely to see.

    I almoooooost at this level with my dog and my s happy about it. And it is because of your 'leave it' video. Previously our trainer wanted us to teach a dog leave it, do something else and then 'go get it', but I noticed that the dog always remembered about those 'leave it' treats and went for them when left alone, so I searched your channel for help and we finally got it. Now we are working on better 'leave it' on the go, during the walks, when he smells something great near trash (or similar) and we are almost there, so THANKS!

    Recently I have started watching your videos and I'm really enjoying the balanced and down to earth approach you have.
    I have a (very) mixed dog, probably some sort of a sighthound mixed with other goodness, judging by appearance and behavior, who is about 1.3 years old.
    We got him from another family who couldn't take care of him anymore about 4 months ago (they have rescued him from a shelter).
    The previous owners didn't do much and mostly just pampered the hell out of him so he was very unreliable and unfocused when I got him, also scared and suspicious.
    I'm working with him every day, at walks and at home.
    He's great and very energetic, yet soft and timid. Listens perfectly and is probably still a bit scared of me.
    In the very begging i was taking him to a dog park almost every day, but was suggested by various sources to refrain from it at least until I solidify our connection and so I did. He LOVES other dogs, humans, cats and whatever that moves, he is very curious and is NEVER aggressive, even not in reaction - he will back away instead.
    The thing is, everything the video talks about goes to hell when we pass by another dog, no recall no leave it (the other dog) , no stay.
    I want to emphasize that with ANY other stimulus that isn't another dog , the rules are very clear to him.
    Recently his behavior around dogs on walks got slightly better as I keep correcting him when he doesn't listen and reward when he does but it seems to have stalled. Many tell me it's natural at his age but I don't want to believe it's a decisive factor. he's quite big and thus my girlfriend can't handle his pull force which makes her wrists hurt later and that's why it's very important for me to make him listen under ANY condition on walks as soon as possible.
    I'd love to hear your opinion on the matter, and sorry for the wall of text , I heard you don't like them.

    I’ll be working on these tree commands tomorrow morning... My Cockapoo knows 2 of these commands.... (she is 6 months old.... a puppy still) but only listens when I have food in my hands. She does good at “leave it” and “stay” but not when I call her to come to me... unless I have food...and other times not even food will make her follow the recall command. I am extremely sweet to her... I’m not the yelling type ... I’m kind and gentle with her... So there is nothing about me that will prevent her from coming to me when I call her.

    I have a fourth (I call them nonegotional commands) which is a down from a distance. There will be a time when the dog is in harm's way & the best thing to do is place them on a down & go to them. Great training techniques BTW. Sláinte

  • @brooke5395
    @brooke5395 4 года назад +1

    We have all of this but no stay command. Whatever her last command, she stays in it until I let her break.
    One more command that's a must, in my opinion is the emergency sit. If you have called your dog back to you and something is approaching to get between you and the dog, being able to stop the dog where it is can be a life saver. You don't want your dog getting hit by a truck while trying to get back to you. 💙
    We use "off" instead of leave it. And I made it so salty. I say "off" and she stops all consideration for what she was gonna do or eat or get. It's like telling a soldier "about face" Lol

    I love your videos and am curious if it should be ok if the dog has both prong collar and e-collar when going out. Will the dog understand the correction or the recall? I am planning to use e-collar only if I will let my dog to run out of leash. Will my dog understand it if I am doing the recall using the e-collar from far away? Thanks

    • @randomamerican471
      @randomamerican471 3 года назад

      Sure your dog can wear both collars. The e-collar is used at the lowest setting noticeable to your dog. And it's only used to prompt compliance to commands the dog has already been taught. Or you will confuse the dog. Recall is an exception. And the collar may be used with the leash to prompt the dog to complete the command. But this has to be done closely first. With the distance being increased gradually as training progresses. Recall should be your dog's only default command on the e-collar. And ideally it should be the first and only thing taught with the aid of an e-collar. Then yes, your dog will understand.
      You need to learn about using the e-collar before using it on your dog. It's not a remote control. You still have to teach the dog. And the dog has to be acclimated to the collar first. Because they don't even know what it is, or how to react to it. The dog needs to be gently taught it's you communicating through the device. Learn all you can about it. Used properly the e-collar is a wonderful tool. But like any other tool it can be misused.

He run away around 50 meters and then he reacted correctly for recall, but doing his way back he touched fence again and run away around 100 meters he tried to come back... but touched it 3rd time. After this he was not reacting for anything just running away in panic like completely wild animal. We were very lucky finding him around 1.5 km away in the forest... he is not coming close to any fence now and when unleashed he stays closer to us now. We were so scared that we lost him forever.

In the yard and home he is fine, but if he is loose and he sees a car or person or a squirrel, he will run off to that. Help me. Is this a focus type of behavior in this breed. I think that he would make a great working BC, but that is not the life I can give him. I've been told that once a BC locks onto something, it is very hard to break him off of that object. Anything that has a strong smell like liver or heart, preferably without grains or preservatives. There are some very good freeze dried products on the market that are just 100% organ meat. In nature animals like dogs will eat the organs of a carcass before even thinking about the muscle meats because there is where all the nutrients are held, it's an instinctual taste for them.

    How can I extend the life of my 2 year old GSD/Malamute so he has enough years left to learn not to purposefully disobey commands he knows perfectly damn well? The vast majority of the time he recalls like an oiled bullet. But just occasionally he sees something that really interests him, and can see I'm just fine on my own, in which case he gives me the "middle paw".

    robert i have my dog understand the leave it, she never touches anything when im close to her,if we are out in a field she will not touch anything when i tell her to leave it but this only happens when im close to her or throw things close to her she waits and looks at me for a command,my problem is when she is off leash over 20 yards away from me if she finds something she will not leave it when i give her the command to leave it.

  • @jgn2112

    Hi Robert. I hope you read this. I brought home an 8 week old GSD last night and I'm already demoralized wondering if I made a huge mistake. I've read two books on training and a ton of your videos (and others) and I feel like a total failure. If nothing else, can you do a video, even if it's just you talking with no demo, on how best to handle the first 72 hours?
    My GSD has almost no interest in treats for use as reinforcement for training, only wants to eat mulch when I take her out to do her business, fights her leash tooth and nail when it's on, indoors and out. Nothing seems like it works.
    Am I expecting too much too early? Does it get easier? I could write more but I'll stop.
    Thank you for all you do.

      You need to just relax. The first few weeks could be like this but if you stay the course it will be an amazing change I promise. Consider jointing my member section at RobertCabral.com the lessons there are more detailed. Start hand feeding and give the puppy plenty of crate time.

    • @skatemore33
      @skatemore33 4 года назад +2

      Yeah I think you're expecting too much too early. Your new pup is in a new strange environment with someone he doesn't know if he can trust. Focus more on building the relationship with the dog first before you start asking or compelling it to do things. And yes, the first few weeks are going to be tough. But it gets better!

    • @eemmzzz
      @eemmzzz 4 года назад

      Pretty sure I saw you post on reddit too. At 8 weeks old you can't expect so much of both yourself and your puppy she has been on the planet 56 days and has just left her mum and litter mates. It takes a little bit of time for them to settle in. Spend the first week just bonding with your puppy and getting toilet training started (but be prepared for it to take a few months). I'm a first time owner too and have made it to the 14 month old mark. They are slow to mature but we can see he will make a wonderful dog once he finishes maturing. Remember that it's a marathon and not a sprint and to be patient but firm and fair. Things will work out.

    • @darrencaswell7856
      @darrencaswell7856 4 года назад +1

      Agree, first 2 weeks spend time toilet training, playing. We used the kibble as a treat initially before moving to higher value treats. Start giving a treat when your dog goes to the toilet in the correct location and you will see the sit will come naturally, start to give that action the command and then you can move that command to other actions such as sit before you put the food bowl down. Consistency and perseverance are key, as Robert says all of a sudden you see it all come together. There may be days when it seems the training is all going wrong and your dog is not doing anything you want. Take a break (coffee's good for these occasions) and then try again.

      *This is an 8 week old puppy* Yeah, you're expecting like the equivalent of a kindergarten age child to master a 1600 on the SAT. You're just making introductions at this point so the behavior you eventually want this dog to model gets set in place. Your dog doesn't even know your language yet. Imagine if you were dropped into a foreign country, and someone mutters verbal commands at you, throws you treats + sticks a leash on you? Everything at this point is completely novel to this puppy.
