  • How to Fix a Leash aggressive, Leash Reactive German Shepherd Dog Training.
In this lesson I meet Ariel and his German Shepherd Koda who has been giving him some serious problems with leash aggression toward other dogs. In the beginning of the video you see how he responds to other dogs just walking by. He is out of control, but what can we do about it? Do we fix leash aggression by dominating the dog, by giving the dog treats or by understanding the dog and working through the behaviors?
Watch the video and see the transformation that Koda goes through in his relationship with Ariel and how he sees the dogs he meets in this training session including my Belgian Malinois Goofy, my Labrador Retriever Jimi and then check out the full 30+ minute video on my member section:

Robert...THIS is the content I think everyone likes...real issues with real dogs in real time with you walking the owner through the process of what to do r.e. voice commands and corrections...can you do more of these with leash reactive dogs, general aggressive dogs etc along with their owners in a real world environment?....great video

Followed this video to the T and set up the same situation with a buddy of mine. I got my one year old german shepherd to sit next to my buddies dog and was also able to walk my dog side by side with my buddies dog in 20 minutes. It wasent the prettiest process cause he whined alot but nonetheless I was able to do something I wasent able to do in almost the 3 months I had him. Thanks for the video and insight Robert and worth the 12 dollar membership on your site!

Great video Robert. What you said in the beginning is so spot on more trainers need to know - if the owner can’t do the training the trainer handling him will not help them. Looks like a lovely shepherd and I commend the owner for allowing us to all learn and watch. He is doing the right thing by searching for help so he can help his dog and their lives together. Great job by everyone.

Robert, this was a great lesson! Love when you give a video working with a dog that actually needs the training that you are trying to teach. It gives a much better example of the kind of corrections that need to be made, and when to reward and mark the behavior you want.

Helpful to see a video on correcting aggression & excitement that mentions Prey Drive, that isn't chalking up the behavior only to fear & insecurity. This will be very helpful to practice with my German Shepherd; he goes particularly nuts around little dogs, but I can start doing this with medium and large dogs and maybe work our way down to little dogs later.

I had an aha moment watching this video, and used the same method with my 7 month old gsd. If he made any movement toward the person, I turned him away. When we would approach and he remained calm, he could sit and get praise from me. I'm starting to allow the reward (praise) to come from the person.

Just amazing! I’ve been following Robert for a while now, 6 days ago we sort of rescued a white female lab - we think she’s just 2-3 years old, she had a liter 4 months ago. We have a 1 year old pitbull- good thing he’s fixed because she’s not and the moment we brought her into our home she went into heat . Since I’ve been following Robert I felt fairly confident, trust me- I’m not a dog trainer. Our new dog Rosie has zero training. Didn’t want to wear a collar- if you put a leash on her, she would drop down and refuse to move ( unless you called her name and she would come forgetting the leash was there, I used that to my advantage) she’s only been here for 6 days. She walks beautifully on a leash, I taught her to sit, she sits to have her leash attached and removed- she is not food aggressive which I’m thrilled about because she is so terribly skinny- she now does as our pitbull Smokey- they sit and wait for me to pit their food down and not allowed to eat until I say so, that’s been the expectation since day one.
She’s the polar opposite of Smokey, Smokey is high energy and loves to play- Rosie is very low energy and doesn’t seem to understand what toys are for. Today, Rosie engaged in doggie play with Smokey.
Thank you Robert Cabral for all the tutorials which have given me the confidence to take on a second dog.
Now if I can just figure out how to bathe her, she hates water more than most cats- since I’ve had Smokey since he was 8 weeks, I had time to expose him to lots of water situations and he loves his baths

It's funny I noticed recently I never talk to my dogs when I'm walking them. I live in a gated condo community with tons of sidewalks but I have no yard so I can only take my dogs on walks and on leash inside the neighborhood. The facility that trained my dogs around 5 years ago told me when I'm with them my focus and attention needs to be up and out paying attention to the environment and not so much the dog. Everything I need to know or feel about my dogs I get through the leash to my hands and arms. I just naturally found that by focusing on the bigger picture I'm concentrated and not talking to my dogs as a result and in turn ready to respond to situations as they occur, such as going around a blind corner and another dog being on the other side, etc. In return my dogs stay focused on their tasks and they lose most care about anything else except on some occasions where there's a new dog or a dog they know or something like that but otherwise it's nose to the grindstone and do our thing and I have a happy existence with my dogs and the outside world.

Thank you for the video! I have a question. How do I re-socialize my GSD after he was attacked by and off leash dog. He seems so scared of people/dogs and is getting reactive. I feel so bad because the attack was not his fault as an off-leash dog came after us and attacked us. Lucky we did not get seriously injured.

Left side, right side; which? Owner needs to train the dog on his left side; only. Otherwise, if the shepherd is bouncing around from side to side, it creates uncertainty in the dog's mind on what exactly he needs to do? Shepherds appreciate direction, but it has to be precise!

Question? Shouldn’t the prong collar be higher on the dogs neck?

  • @shelly6303

And also the puppies just want to play all day, when ever I walk away they follow me to the stair gate and just look at me till I’m gone and wait there too, always bringing me the ball and I can’t play with them all day so it’s hard to know when I should and shouldn’t, and also for them to understand that, with the house training as well, having 2 seperate cages for the puppies or even 4 for the dogs as well isn’t possible, there’s not enough room in the house, two big ones are fine, still not enough room for two cages so I’m at a dead end, if you can help with that that would be great :))

Do you use a prong collar?

You probably won't see this, but thank you for these training tips. My dog is an amazing dog, however he pulls a lot on the leash and barks at other dogs sometimes. I did these tips today and in one day he already started walking better. I'm going to keep working with him on this, but just from this he's already much better.

I have the exact same situation and behaviour with one of my German shepherds. I prefer to keep mine aggressive as she is, due to the high crime rate here in cape town. I do take her for walks from time to time, but never off the leash. When we do hikings, which happens frequently, I do take her off leash and play fetch, as she has a very high drive to play fetch with anything that I thow at her.

that drive can carry over to bikes, children, cars and joggers, i hope u only unleash your "aggressive" dog when you *know* your alone with him

This isn’t aggression, Robert says it’s a leash reactivity, build up of frustration caused by being restricted by the leash. Your dog needs guidance on what she can and cannot do on the lead. Hope you are strong to hold this dog when she’s kicking off at all other stimuli.

@@myxezipetelka yes I do. I do only do it whilst hiking, when I'm absolutely sure that that there are nobody

Hi.. I can totally relate.. I live in SA and unless you live there u have no idea what it's really like to be continuing on your guard etc. What we need to.ask Robet to teach is for the dog to give signs to others to back off / keep your distance.. I will protect my owner so I strongly "suggest" that you pose no treat and give us a wide berth.
This Saturday another farmer was hacked to death with a panga 3 kms from me. Of course no media coverage on that..
