Agalloch, The Mantle is a masterpiece album. But that's what it is, an album. It's easier with the other song, "pale companion", because it's the start if the album. This song is a little out of context.
Personally I feel the song isn't too long but that's becuase I've heard it 50 times.
I would recommend "Falling Snow" next. It's from the follow up album, I wouldn't revisit thins until you're ready to do the full album. It's a great driving album, especially in the winter months.

Ichor is the "Blood" of Gods and Immortals in Greek Mythology.
So instead of blood they have Ichor running through their Body. Its described as a nectar like fluid.
Bonus: The Word Nectar itself is from Greek origin meaning Nek (Death) and Tar (to overcome)

I honestly think that besides “In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion” The Mantle works better listening to it as a whole rather than picking and choosing songs from it. It’s an album that ebbs and flows so this song fits a bit better when you hear the stuff that plays before and after it.
There’s less of a journey in this song compared to “In The Shadow...” so I can see why you could criticize it for being long. We set the bar pretty high by showing you “In The Shadow...” first. Nothing else on that album can really top that song but there’s lots of gems on their other albums I think you’ll enjoy. Agalloch were often a band that could tweak their sound from album to album yet still retain an identity that would let you know you were still listening to Agalloch.
Hope to see you react to them again at some point.

About the song *being too long* comment in the video, some music genres are tailored for fun, beat, dance, lyrics (sometimes lack thereof), mainly radio and pop culture (NOT generalising).
I can't recall the number of times I got the same comment from my friends throughout the years, I guess because of the humongous amount of shitty music that gets shoved down our throats at every turn (internet, radio, TV ads, public places...etc).
I feel we get programmed subconsciously for a specific duration for a song, that if it gets longer we get bored and expect another song.
atmospheric (insert a metal genre here) in general is the exact opposite, you can't have that mentality going in and expect to enjoy it, it takes time to get used to it, and appreciate the art behind it, if the song dons't suck that is :)
I think the best mode to enjoy them is usually when I am relaxed surfing the web, thinking, drinking coffee in the morning...etc where entering the atmosphere is my goal, instead of hearing many different songs each with their own atmosphere, if that makes sense.
This is not a diss comment, just my thoughts on a problem that is to some degree not our fault.
    Cheers :)

Like snowfall, you cry a silent storm
Your tears paint rivers on this oaken wall
    Amber nectar, misery ichor
Cascading in streams of hallowed form
For each stain, a forsaken shadow
    You are the lugubrious spirit
Etched in the oak of wonder
You are the sullen voice and silent storm
    Each night I lay
Awakened by her shivering silent voice
From the shapes in the corridor walls.
It pierces the solitude like that of a distant scream
In the pitch-black forest of my delusion
With each passing day, a deeper grave
Why did you leave me to die?
    Why did you abandon me?
Why did you walk away and leave me bitterly yearning?"
Her haunting, contorted despair was etched into the wood's grain
Though fire rages within me, no fire burns fiercer than her desire
    The shape whispers my name
    I damn this oak
    I damn her sorrow
    I damn these oaken corridors
That bear the ghosts of those I've thrown away
Though tempted I am to caress her texture divine
And taste her pain sweet, sweet like brandy wine
I must burn these halls, these corridors
And silence her shrill, tormenting voice
    Forever
Like snowfall, you cried a silent storm
No tears stain this dust in my hands
But from this ashen gray, her voice still
    Whispers my name
    You were the lugubrious spirit
Who haunted the oak of wonder
You were the geist that warned this frozen silent storm
You were but a ghost in my arms

First Arkona, now Agalloch? You guys are on a roll! You're reacting to all my favorite artists lately! This isn't one of their very best songs, though, imo. They have some truly amazing pieces, however. My personal feeling about this song, btw, is that it's mourning the loss of Mother Earth/Mother Nature, i. e. the destruction of the earth and climate, and the way the witness to this interprets how nature demonstrates its pain. The ghost in his arms, in my mind, is Earth.

Edit2: Glad you liked the lyrics, was hoping you did, that's one of the reasons I felt like this would be a good choice, compared to some of their other songs that are still long, but only have like 8 lines on lyrics.

They need to do a show called “album walkthrough” every week. On that they review a whole album straight because most metal music should be listened this way.

I think you should try and listen to the entire album. It's completely amazing and it would make more sense, in my opinion. This song you've heard is kind of out of context...

I just have to say, that most reviews of songs I have seen lack proper depth and treatment. The two of you go deep into this and Agalloch being one of my favorite bands, just wow. I really like the two of you. Though I don't agree with your opinion of the song being too long. Like snowfall, the song is really long. :)

"Not enough variation in the instrumental". I know you listened to a lot of black metal, and this band is inspiried by it - it's meant to be drony. It's meant to put you into a mood just like dance music is meant to put you in a groove.
