    I always enjoy watching young sewists and I'm very impressed with your channel, I am 61 and have sewn for 50 years and I love learning because even sewing is continually evolving. I have 3 overlockers, white,black and med neutral threaded, (age has privalage) 2 singer and 1 elna, my original is 30 years old and still works well. You can purchase a long needle threader to get the thread into the difficult upper and lower looper and it's easier than tweezers. Stick to good quality overlocker threads as they do have an impact on the results. A trick I use is to keep a note book handy to write down the tension numbers / differential feed and stitch length that works for each different fabric as a reference.When tensions play up I find taking all tensions back to 0 and increasing / slowly adjust until you are at the correct tension. Congrats on your wonderful presentations.🙂

    I really appreciate your review. Many people do unboxing videos, but for me that doesn't actually tell me how good or bad the machine is based on a first impression.
    What I want to know is all the pros and cons about it, which you actually did. Thank you for the amazing review!

    Thanks for the review... looking at retiring my lovely old overlocker. So researching new models.
    As an aside, threading is super easy. A trick I learnt is to cut the spool at the top tie the new colours on and loosen tension to zero and pull all your threads through from below. Keeps them all tidy and you dont have the tricky bits to thread, only the needles. Just thought I'd share

    I've not got a heavy duty singer overlocker but have the basic model. I've found playing with the differential tension made a difference to my stitches which was more noticeable than changing the tension on the dials at times. Not sure if that helps you with needing the highest tension or not but I found I needed a higher differential feed when working with jersey/ cotton lycra etc

    Thank you for such an informative video!! You’ve sold me on buying this one. I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to find a review video that didn’t just show an unboxing and a serger is such an investment that I needed to be sure.
    I currently have the singer heavy duty sewing machine and I use it to sew mostly Lycra and spandex. I’ve only been sewing for about a year currently but the second day that I had started using a machine, I dug my friends mom’s old serger out and gave it a go. Definitely scary now that I look back but I was so excited to finally be sewing 😂
    I can’t wait to have a machine that will finally make sewing knits that much easier. So thank you

    This is my first Singer overlocker and I'm totally lost as to why there's no thread/chain cutter? I'm slowly getting used to where the pressure foot lever is, but having to thread the needles with my left hand is frustrating. Saying that, threading the under loopers is a delight compared to previous overlockers. I do like it overall which is a good thing because it certainly has that strong, tough, live forever feel...land rover of the overlocker world for sure. Nothing flimsy about it.

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  3 года назад

      I've never actually thought about it! As you should continue the thread chain for a couple of inches so I normally just snip it off with my snips but its a good point! I hope you're enjoying your overlocker xx

    Just a quick suggestion: Get one of those cheap keyboard/mouse mats used by gamers. Works wonders in stopping that kickback/recoil action of the overlocker. :-)

    I just bought this machine. Because it came pre threaded I thought I could do what you said. Attach thread to the existing thread get some fabric and go. The motor runs but doesn't engage the needles. When I turn the fly wheel the needles work. Not sure why?

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  Год назад

      I'm sorry to hear that's been your experience. I would definitely recommend getting in touch with singer about that as it sounds like a fault - but in the meantime I would strip all the thread from the machine, give it a clean, and rethread to see if it helps?

      @@SoWhatIfISew well, I contacted the online store I purchased it from. They gave me a full refund and said not to mail the machine back. I took the side panel off as I suspected the belt. Sure enough the belt had slid off. Tried to put it on and tighten it but it keeps slipping off. Going to take it to a repair shop because at this point I have nothing to loose the machine was free!

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  2 года назад +1

      Sorry for the very delayed reply! You need to make sure you are creating a chain of about 3 inches before your start sewing, that should stop the machine unthreading as all four threads will be tied together

      Make sure you are threading it properly. This is an excellent video on how to thread your machine (it starts threading at about 3:40). Mine did the same thing, until I learned to thread it properly. ruclips.net/video/BhEtdNnNtos/видео.html

    I bought an X 500-HD Singer overlock on line and it did not come with the manual, but a leaflet. It's instruction said to download the manual which l am unable to do. I find this very frustrating as it should have come with the manual.

    Hi Jess, love your review of this machine!
    I am currently looking into buying an overlocker for dog bandana production, and was wondering if you have tested how tight a stitch along the edge you can make with the Singer machine? To explain/show what I mean, please have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/rFdUKChZXoI/видео.html
    Is this possible on the Singer you have? Thank you in advance!

  • @colhoo
    @colhoo 3 года назад

    Wrong info - they are not essentially for lycra at all. They are used for many different reasons, rolled hems, and for finishing off edges. Perhaps you should do a bit of research of overlockers for future reviews.

      Hi! I’m aware of that and I do explain that I’m the video however the ability to sew technical fabrics such as Lycra is one of the things that separates them from a regular sewing machine. Perhaps you should consider leaving less rude comments.

      From a nearly 60 year old who has been sewing for over 50 years - let’s applaud the younger generations for their enthusiasm and eagerness to promote sewing. It’s so clear Jess is utterly delighted with her overlocker and is thoroughly enjoying both using it and discovering it’s capabilities. As Jess says negatively isn’t necessary and doesn’t actually achieve anything. I would have loved having this sewing community when I was in my 20s which is why I’m 100% behind the younger sewers/needle people and look forward to their vlogs. Sewing is two way we learn from each other. Also making vlogs takes a lot of time so THANK YOU Jess xxx
