I have been running in the NB Hierro v7 (hybrid) and I love them. I recently hiked some regions of Colombia in them and the lugs held. NB is my favorite road and trail shoe. I’m happy to see you giving them the recognition they deserve 😊
The summit unknown is good for hiking. I use the NB Unknown & The Saucony Peregrines for my long hikes. The only thing I'd recommend is for u to replace the insoles. Buy a pair of Tread Labs insoles. They are game changers and will give ur feet much needed support on the trails. When hiking, keep in mind that ur feet are constantly rocking back and forth from side to side. By the way, buy the Ramble insoles or if u have plantar faciatis then buy the Pace model. Good luck!
Picked up the SG version for £99 pounds and I am loving them, I wanted just a bit more lug but it’s still very comfortable on gravel tracks too. Great value and great advice, thank you!
Great review! I wore the v1 and improved v2 for the first two Snowdon 100 milers. I think they where both 28mm at the heal with a 6mm drop. Absolutely amazing although then discontinued. I'm looking forward to trying these out! Totally agree about the need for a mid-cushioned trail shoe, and I like how narrow they are (snug, not narrow I would say) - this fashion of wide shoes is good for nothing but blisters (too much movement). The sole is Hydro-Hesion. Its mega on wet rocks. All good!!
Looking forward to trying those on, I've always enjoyed the lower stack trail shoe, like the Hoka Torrent. Just wish we got the yellow colorway here in the US, we only have the blue/grey color and black.
Thanks Pat, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately I looked everywhere for the stack hight but I couldn't find it anyway? 🤔 Thanks for watching 🙏
NB is probably my favorite brand of shoes, road and trail. So I'm glad you like these. And what a first run review! I really have to try these i wide edition. Bonus info: they also come in a SG version with 6.5mm lugs.
Really looking forward to the X More Trail V3 as I do not care about feel, it's about cushioning for me. Can you do more on recovery? I use Riixo cold compression calf sleeves and thinking about getting the quads one too......sat here after London with aching legs! What products would you recommend and also nutrition after runs like protein etc??? Great content BTW!!!
more a question than a comment... I am running long distance on trail, usually with standard running shoes (my present shoes are 1080 and 880 from NB... preferred is 1080)... and I had Salomon but got blisters past 25km... following this video, I am thinking to get a pair of something like this, which seems great for trail mixed path, with likely a bit more grip and stability compare to my road pairs... so, the question would be: would these fit long distance trail runs (15 to 20 hours runs), and what would be your view of the best choice of well fitting tight shoes for such trail runs? Thanks in advance
Hi Loyd. I like the look of the shoe. I live in the US and the link you have is for the UK. Your link is the only place that I can find that color. Do they ship to the US?
This, or the On Cloudvista? Checking both out right now (I have both pairs at home, only one will remain) and they surprisingly have a similar fit and feel. Having a tough time debating.. I’ve been enjoying your content! I’m a new trail runner and these videos really do help. Thanks!!
I've not run in the On shoe so it's impossible to say. What I can say is I really enjoy running in the Unknown Summit, it's a great shoe! Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊
I was told 6mm and it say 6mm on the NB website Luan 👍 It definitely doesn't feel like a 10mm off set when you're running in them. Thanks for watching 🙏
Do you think these will get me to Brixham from Kingswear along the muddy coastal path during the soggy winters? Or does anyone know of a shoe in a wide fit that will? (Running not walking)
what do u think of the mid sole? I've seen NB harden the fresh foam compound for their trail series, and the differentiated colorway on the midsole here makes me think they did the same thing here. I understand why they do it but it makes me hesitant to sink my dollars in before really getting to pound these out on the trail with a heavy pack. Does it feel as soft/responsive as the road fuel cell?
It's definitely not as soft as the road fuelcell foam Justin. Obviously the road environment is very different to trails and road Fuelcell would be pretty unstable on technical trails and that's what this shoe is designed for. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊
The Summit Unknown V4's are actually quite similar to the Peregrine 13's, there's not a lot in it but the Peregrine does offer more underfoot protection 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏 Loyd
The New Balance Leadville was my first trail shoe. I loved them and occasionally use them for a walk in the woods! Since then I have been waiting for a NB trail shoe that would use Fuelcell. I'm also in the market for a short-distance shoe. And I love my Rebel v2s. This review gave me a good reason to give those a go. Great material Loyd, as usual!
I haven’t run in the Venture 9 but I have run in the Trabuco and Fuji lite. I’d say the Summit Unkown feel a bit lighter and more responsive to run in 👍
@@Run4Adventure waw thanks for the response. How about the performance of the grip if you compare this summit unknown with some vibram outsole shoes? are the still comparable?
@@gallencool Nothing is as good as Vibram megagrip in my opinion but the outsole grip and traction is good on the Summit Unkown. Obviously asics trail shoes don’t come with Vibram rubber 👍

@Run4Adventure I don't know how comparable they are, but if you had to choose between Salomon Sense Ride 5 and New Balance FuelCell Summit Unknown V4 which would you choose
They are very different shoes but I'd definitely go for the NB Summit unknown V4's. It ferls a lot more exciting to run in and the outsole grip is really good but it is a narrow fitting upper. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊 Loyd
@@Run4Adventure Thanks for the quick reply! And how durable do you think the NB is, would the outsole and upper last 500km or more? I enjoy watching your videos!
@@i.dimitrov3721 It looks pretty solid but it's impossible to say until you've run 500k in them? Really glad you're enjoying the channel and thanks for watching 🙏
I might have to give NB a run at some point. I’ve walked around in there shoes but never ran in them. I’m excited for the Altra Outroad 2’s that come out soon. I didn’t try the old version due to reported durability issues but the version 2’s supposedly have fixed that.
I run these on the road (half marathon & marathon) because road shoes have become too soft (not enough support over long distances). I always run a NB wide (D) so I just buy the men’s shoe to get a wide fit, that can be a solution for women with wide feet, sadly the men are stuck with only standard width in this model. Hopefully new balance will take that onboard in the future and make V5 in standard and wide
Wow, I'm not sure I'd want to wear them for a road marathon! I'd happily wear them for a trail marathon but they'd be a bit aggressive for me on the road and surely you wear the lugs down really quick? I totally agree that a lot of road running shoes have became very soft 👍 Thanks for watching 🙏
Looking for a trail shoe that's as bouncy and responsive as my Saucony Endorphin Speeds, but can handle wet grass and some mud. Hoping this shoe (maybe in the SG version) or The Saucony Endorphin Rift or The Topo MTN Racer 3 Will fit the bill Let me know if there's anything else to consider
The NB Summit unknown v4 woukd definitely handle the wet grass and mud fine. It's not going to give you the bounce of a Endorphin Speed though. Like I said in the video, it's not a deeply cushioned trail shoe! Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊
You could use it for hiking on the trails but it is quite stripped back when it comes to cushioning and structure 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
