The unwritten rule that was broken was you never, EVER criticize or put down your own players in public.
Discussions like that are meant for the clubhouse, behind closed doors and private. Now, every player on the Padres will question their manager...does he have our back?
Scenario: a play at the plate, close but player is out. He thinks he is safe & starts to argue the call. A Real manager will go out and argue the call too...if things get stupid, the manager should get himself tossed.
If the manager got out of the dugout & yells at his own player, "get in the dugout, you were out by a mile", "You missed the sign to stop at 3rd"...etc. that team is doomed to failure.
This is what just happened to San Diego.
When you get hot in MLB you have got to respect the streak, as it rarely happens, NOT TRY TO KILL IT. Again, this is what just happened. Hope Tatis can recover as these streaks can be fragile.

I'm from EU and I don't know if you watch soccer or know much about it but last friday Barcelona played Bayern in the UEFA Champions League and Bayern won 8-2 which by soccer amounts 8 goals is insane, almost never see it. The last goal was scored by Coutinho at 89 minutes and before that he scored at the 85 minute mark. Game ends at 90 minutes + compensation usually 2-4 extra minutes. So the game was already pretty much over both times he scored. By all accounts what he did is, by the baseball unwritten rule standards, much much worse than what Tatis did and you didn't see anyone saying in the news "coutinho should have just passed the ball around or missed on purpose". Soccer is about scoring goals and baseball is about scoring runs, if you're mad about getting smashed just work harder so it doesn't happen again in the future, don't blame the other team. And on the coach thing I wouldn't want to play on a team in which the manager doesn't have my back.

Well, this is a brand new Manager, and who knows what his GM said behind the scenes. Though I did sadly hear his own teammate Eric Hosmer also chided him a little too. Hopefully, he has others backing him on the team and someone tells the Manager a better way to do this. Even if he wanted to tell Tatis to not do it, don't do it in the public eye. That's just rude and does nothing to make him feel appreciated.

@phat bill I mean as said there have been leads were vanished when ahead by 10 even. I mean I understand being respectful as you run the bases and such, but your stats are important in your run for contracts and chances at hof.
Doubt 1 home run and 4 rbi would keep him out, but it can add up over a career. As long as the home run trot is respectful and he isn't trying to be a dick, go for the swing.
I mean that pitcher I am sure would rather have had the extra strike then the bloated era, so he should have gone for the strike out too.

Football teams run out the clock to IMPROVE their chances of winning. It’s a bad analogy because they are two very different situations. The football team is TRYING to win, but in baseball they want you to DECREASE your chances of winning.

Coming to baseball later in life as a layperson, I feel like most of the unwritten rules could be made obsolete if the losing team had the option of conceding. Curling does this. If you’re getting shelled and there’s no realistic chance at coming back, you can concede. This is subtly different than a mercy rule, because the losing team is free to continue even if the odds are stacked against them.
I get that Baseball purists might balk and this, but think about it. The only reason the winning team should stop trying to score is if the game is already over as a contest. If the game is over, then it should be over. If the losing team isn’t ready to concede, then the game isn’t over. Suck it up, get guys out, and stop whining.
    My two cents.

      @jeffreytoman5202 4 года назад

BromleyGaffer - conceding a game? Yea it happens. I know you said you are new to the sport, but there are times where non pitchers pitch. When a manager decides to put in their second string catcher to pitch the 7th inning, the manager is waiving the white flag. Every team does it once a year or so...

  • @DerInselaffe
    @DerInselaffe 4 года назад +3

Pretty silly that some people use the excuse that 'this is how it was always played' or 'how we were raised'. No, because the game has always evolved in small and larger ways. Trying hit the ball out almost every at-bat is a relatively new thing in the grand scheme of things. There are other aspects too: we don't get high BA/OBP and low power guys really anymore; shifts; equipment quality; umpires calling games for both leagues and so no difference in strike zone; showing emotion and celebration even as basic as high-fiving... I could go on.
Your aim should always be to score runs, otherwise there is no point. I played association football as a kid and only switched to baseball at uni (from the UK) and was frequently on teams that could win a game 10-0. I've been on the receiving end of 21-3 losses in baseball. Do people stop trying just because it's a big lead? No, and I would consider it more disrespectful and patronising for an opponent to 'go easy' on us.

I'm usually all in favor of most of baseball's unwritten rules, but this Tatis thing goes way too far. Not stealing bases, grinding out squeeze bunts, and otherwise showing up your opponents I understand. That's going out of your way to take chances and try to get extra runs which can make sense in certain situations, but in a blowout, yes, I think that's disrespectful to your opponents.
However, I think it's equally as disrespectful to make a deliberate choice to not try. Batters are required by the rules to walk up to the plate and bat, and I think it's preposterous to expect your opponent not to put good swings on pitches they can hit. Even stuff like tagging up from 3rd, if the runner can easily score on a fly ball without there being a play at the plate he should run home.
You still play the game right when you're ahead. When you're up by a dozen runs, you don't necessarily throw tons of pickoff moves, steal bases, etc., but you walk up to the plate and do your job. I've been around baseball my entire life and I've never heard anyone suggest you just stand there and don't swing the bat when you're ahead. What's next, a pitcher needing to lob a couple meatballs down the middle in a blowout?

And don't forget that the stats these guys put up will affect how they get paid down the line. It irritates me as a fan to see the opposing team score and yes it is embarrassing, but at the same time, my team needs to get the outs and provide run support to their pitchers. Rangers didn't get the job done and the Padres earned it. SD has some great hitters who can make some clutch plays. Bad form on the Rangers to throw at Machado. Seems like a bad strategy to piss off a team that has been stomping on you. He got his payback last night with the walkoff grand slam. Rangers need to move on, regroup, and try to figure out how to get some wins. Also wanted to say thanks for your channel. My son has learned a lot from your videos since he's been in little league. Exactly how I felt too. You could be down (hypothetically) by a thousand runs with one out left and come back, in something like football it just isn't even possible to come back from like 40 points in a minute. Also I think its completely different in pros, in highschool and amateur i get why you don't want to go over board with the runs, but Tatis will absolutely 100% get a bigger contract for every HR and could be the difference of winning the ROY or MVP.

Baseball is able to incorporate multiple generations of fans because of the rich tapestry of tradition and history woven into the game. Consequently, there will be certain “unwritten rules” borne out of tradition, and I am of the opinion that some of those should be valued (e.g. “do not bunt if the opposing pitcher has a perfect game/no-hitter going into the 8th inning”); however, some of these “unwritten rules” (e.g. Tatis Jr. swinging at 3-0 fastball down and away while leading by 7) are ridiculous. In my opinion, baseball collectively has to choose between tradition and individualism. If you’re going to embrace individualism and “let the kids play,” then do not expect the younger players to abide by these obscure and ambiguous rules rooted in tradition.
By the way, I am only brought to tears at the lack of appearance by “Cowboy Matt” on Twitch, rather than baseball’s ambivalence toward “unwritten rules.” We want Cowboy Matt back, please.

I'm embarrassed for the Rangers for being in "game over" mode with 6 outs to go and down by only 7 runs... also, let's say he takes that pitch when he knew he could yard it. Would the Rangers be required to refrain from rallying against the Padres in exchange for Tatis laying down? It makes no sense

The only disrespectful part about this game was Tingler being more worried about his old team than backing his new team. Plus he's a liar. At best he gave a yellow light (pick a spot). Tatis Jr was robbed a chance to celebrate a great performance. Tingler is a joke.

In high school baseball, there is a 10-run rule that ends the game if a team leads by 10 runs after 5 innings (or 4.5 if the home team has the 10-run lead). If MLB introduces such a rule (or a similar rule), maybe some of the unwritten rules will go away.

  • @brad7682

Certain unwritten rules are valid. Don't show up the other team. This doesn't mean you can't celebrate or batflip. This means you don't stare down a pitcher or dugout. You celebrate WITH your team, not GLOAT in the face of the other team. Obviously, there are situations of retaliation or bad blood that may justify gloating. Some players have taken exception to celebration when they shouldn't have though. I think there is a nice middle-ground on that one. For batting, there really shouldn't be any unwritten rules other than don't bunt to breakup a no-hitter. That's just disrespectful.

I’ve never played baseball and I’d call myself maybe an average fan. Not that my opinion matters much, but if I was on a team down 7 in the top of the 8th and the other team stopped trying to get runs, I’d feel disrespected. It would make me think they believe we can’t come back. Just me in my mind 🤷🏽‍♂️

If it is expected the winning team lay down when up be a certain amount, then it should be expected the losing team isn’t going to try and come back. Stupid rule anyway. Object of the game is to score more than your opponent.

Yes baseball has fallen behind and is now in 3rd place, behind the NFL and NBA. Its so old school, they dont like eccentric players, they market their stars horribly. Their social media game is absolutely horrible. Game is dieing but they have huge television contracts and whatnot so their athletes are the highest paid, its weird.

High-level performers need to always be practicing to get and stay good. Your muscles don't know the difference between a big lead and a tie game. This is Tatis practicing his skill to maintain it, and when he hits a big shot in a tie game, you can thank him for taking "B.P." in a big lead.

The thing for me is that this rule doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Taking 3-0 is the high percentage play. Chances are a guy swinging is probably out 60% of the time. A fly-out speeds up the game a lot faster than a walk. Swing away is the merciful call most of the time. This is lame. If you're up big you open up and let the other team have a chance to collect outs and go home. This is a dumb, poorly thought out rule.

  • @brandonmassey2910

Most unwritten “rules “ are in place to protect the super soft pitchers from getting butthurt. If you don’t want a guy swinging at a 3-0 pitch, don’t throw 3 balls. If a guy knocks one 450, he should be able to show a little personality and celebrate and if the pitcher doesn’t like it, maybe don’t throw a pitch that is going to get blasted into the next state.
Baseball is harder to watch now that it was 10 years ago, there have been virtually no improvements and the games are literally decided by 4 humans when we have the technology to get the call right 99% or the times.
Just like Olympic boxing in the 90s baseball is being corrupted by a few refs who think they are the star of the show rather than the players.

It really doesn't but it's still annoying to have, especially the ones that are unneeded. That thing Texas did a few nights ago is one of them. They're not needed in the game, they're just there to protect their sensitive feelings.
Unwritten rules about sportsmanship is great, but other rules like the one from the Padres / Texas game is unnecessary and not even unsportsmanlike.
Also the fact that his team isn't supporting him... Man that's sad. Tatis Jr. is having a great year so far, and is pretty much their best player, and they're not backing him up? That's how you lose a player. He should move to another team when he gets the chance.

  • @djweller72

The only issue with swinging 3-0 is you need to be sure to drive the ball. Know the situation. If your team is down by 2 in the ninth, take the pitch. It's more important to get on base, and a walk is as good as a hit.
As far as the other team's feelings, too bad. Both teams are still trying. The only problem I have with Tatis swinging on 3-0 is that he missed the sign to take.

I saw nothing wrong with what tatis did, if anything the pitcher should be upset at himself and woodward should be upset his team was losing
But to throw at machado afterwards, if anything that deserves disciplinary action for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Teams can blow big leads, even at the top level so you score when you can.
As a batter you also want to help your pitchers as much as you can
The game is not over till the final out, i remember reading that an american player once got pissed off at his japanese teammates back in the 60s for packing up all the team equipment during the 9th inning as they felt the game was over due to the scoreline. He scolded his teammates and said its a sign of giving up.
So had woodward and co given up? If so maybe its them who should leave the game

You run out the ball in football because it increases your chances of winning the game when you’re already ahead. Running doesn’t stop the clock like passing does so as long as you can pick up a few first downs you put the game away.
It’s not showboating to pass when you’re winning late in the game, it’s a strategic blunder, football teams play to win until the clock hits 00:00.
Baseball should be the same, especially since as long as there are outs left the other team can come back from any deficit.

So after the batter plays for about 20 years and then 5 years later he does not get elected into the HOF because he only had 499 homeruns because he took the pitch and walked instead of swinging away and getting the homerun. If the pitcher sucks the pitcher sucks. No hitter should help make that pitcher look good by not swinging.

And who is looking at signs a great young player like this late in the game, there is no sign , stop the bullshit. What is the point of continuing to watch a blow out game if one of the teams is no longer going to try and score? The margin of victory means something to me. It shows what a team is capable of. Unwritten rules get in the way of that. They are for players, not for fans.
