Parco Archeologico Scolacium Roccelletta di Borgia Catanzaro - History of Calabria Italy

Il Parco Archeologico di Scolacium è stato istituito nel 1982 con l'annesso Antiquarium di Roccelletta. Custodisce i resti dell'antica città greca di Skilletion divenuta colonia romana dopo la guerra contro Annibale, con il nome di Minervia Scolacium.
Dell'abitato preromano di Skilletion rimane poco, mentre restano l'impianto della colonia romana e i resti delle strade lastricate, dell'acquedotto, degli impianti temali, dell'anfiteatro e del teatro. Il teatro è sul pendio naturale della collina, e poteva ospitare ca. 5000 spettatori.
Fu costruito nel corso del I sec. d.C., e fu dotato di una nuova scena in occasione della fondazione della colonia di Nerva, in concomitanza con il notevole sviluppo monumentale della città e con l'ampliamento dell'intero abitato; fu peraltro oggetto di numerosi rifacimenti successivi, fino al IV sec. d.C.
Dal teatro proviene la maggior parte del materiale recuperato durante gli scavi, tra cui spiccano i pregevoli frammenti architettonici e gruppi scultorei. Poco distante dal teatro si trovano i resti dell'anfiteatro, la cui costruzione risale all'epoca dell'intervento di Nerva.
Nel parco si trova inoltre la Basilica di Santa Maria di Roccella, fondata tra l'XI e il XII secolo secondo i canoni dell'arte romanica, con suggestioni bizantine e arabe.
The Archaeological Park of Scolacium was established in 1982 with the annexed Antiquarium of Roccelletta. It houses the remains of the ancient Greek city of Skilletion which became a Roman colony after the war against Hannibal, with the name of Minervia Scolacium.
Little remains of the pre-Roman settlement of Skilletion, while the layout of the Roman colony and the remains of the paved streets, the aqueduct, the theme facilities, the amphitheater and the theater remain. The theater is on the natural slope of the hill, and could accommodate approx. 5000 spectators.
It was built during the first century. A.D., and was equipped with a new scene on the occasion of the foundation of the colony of Nerva, in conjunction with the remarkable monumental development of the city and with the expansion of the entire inhabited area; it was also the subject of numerous subsequent renovations, up to the fourth century. A.D.
Most of the material recovered during the excavations comes from the theater, among which the valuable architectural fragments and sculptural groups stand out. Not far from the theater are the remains of the amphitheater, whose construction dates back to the time of Nerva's intervention.
In the park there is also the Basilica of Santa Maria di Roccella, founded between the 11th and 12th centuries according to the canons of Romanesque art, with Byzantine and Arab influences.
