    Those rolled turkey breasts are good here in the USA. Depending on if it's just the boneless breast rolled or if it's processed turkey, the "processed" ones have more of the lunchmeat texture. Flavor is generally good on both. When my boys were little they were cheap. I'd slice them, serve over mashed potatoes with gravy.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely had a grain to it that seemed like meat, it fell apart across that grain, we defrosted one and used it, very tasty, has a stuffing in the middle but just a small bit, which was pleasant to the taste too! We had that one cold in various dishes, but I think I'll try heating the other one as more like a roast and serving warm over veg like you said :D

    In Canada boneless skinless chicken thighs are $14.99 a kilo with bone in skin on is $8.99. I told a clerk for a savings of $6 a kilo i will remove bone and skin myself. And i don't like thigh meat but i am trying to expand my meat choices. I detest wings, when i got chickens from the farm i would part it out with all the wings going in a bag to freeze. Then when i went to potlucks i cooked the wings up and people were thrilled!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  Месяц назад

      I used to never be a fan of thighs, but I have grown to appreciate them over the years, cutting that bone out is so simple, but even the bone in ones here were quite expensive (9.50kg bone in, 11.49kg bone out!) not a huge price difference!
      I actually used to not be a fan of wings/legs, any bone in chicken, I have decided that certain ways that I cook them appeal to me more than others and have sort of gotten a taste for them, I don't like the pointy bit of the wings though and they are a great food for the dogs, so they enjoy them! :D

    Hi Nyssa! Amazing hamper that you received :) ALDI have whole chickens for only $3.99 a kilo all of the time. They are somewhat smaller than the Coles or Woolies ones, but they do make excellent chicken stock :)

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад

      Someone else mentioned that! I haven't looked tbh because I tend to not buy meat from coles/aldi because I go there on the Thurs and don't leave till the Friday, so need to walk them up to mums fridges and then back down to the esky's and they sit in the esky's all day etc, but that is actually fine, the esky's are rated for that and I stick ice packs in them in the morning, it is just another 'step' to think about heh :D

    I live off grid with my family on the mid north coast NSW. At the moment we are enjoying exploiting lamb and pork from Coles, at $8 a kilo that's cheap especially for lamb. A 3 kilo lamb leg roast @approx $30 ish for our whole family is good eating. My husband enjoys cold roast meat sandwiches for lunch at work the next day. Great value especially in the current economic climate. Have a nice day 😊

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад

      I don't really look at the price of meat at coles generally! because I go there the day before I leave, I tend to not buy it because I'd have to bring it up to mums fridge and back down to the esky's the next day and the travel etc, but maybe I need to take a better look, it seems like Coles has brought a lot of their meat prices down, I checked online after discussing the chook prices and I was right, they were $5.50kg in December, then $4.50kg in January but on sale for $3.50kg so things must be getting easier to get for them. I will definitely make a point of checking this month.

    Yay! A pressure cooker. I'm not a fan of the texture of pressure cooked chicken, but I do use mine mostly for broth, does a brilliant job in an hour. The same as if I had been using the slow cooker for 12+ hours.

    Our coles have been doing whole chickens for $5 each at the end of the month for about the last week since November last year. I’d say it was an Xmas thing but they had them again in January so I’ll be keeping an eye out this month also

    • @rentedspace7462
      @rentedspace7462 6 месяцев назад

      @@OurSmallFootprint yes do. I feel that it’s something even if your mum grabbed them and stuck them in the freezer if your not down when they go on sale at that price. Totally worth it. We bought two for Xmas and had enough for three days of eating with the sides and such.

    Chicken wings at our Walmart run from $2-$5 per pound.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  7 месяцев назад +1

      I just looked em up and they're running at $3.75 a kg at Coles atm, (2 x bags of 2kg for $15) which I think, if my mathing works, ends up being 1.11USD per lb. I have cooked them up previously, but I find there's a lot of wastage, though the leftovers make good stock! because my kids just don't strip the bones enough, whereas its good for the dogs teeth and means less bought food for them too :D

  • @Desertthorn11
    @Desertthorn11 7 месяцев назад +2

    Here in the US, chicken wings are really expensive, especially now for Super Bowl, like $5 bucks per pound, and you feed them to the dogs. LOL.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hehe, I find them really fiddly, there's just not much meat on them, and its really good for the dogs teeth to eat the raw wings! They do make great stock though as well :D - I just looked em up, can get them for $3.75 a kg here atm!

    I’ve heard that Costco rotisserie chickens are super cheap…… next time I’m there I’m going to have a look. Just a thought but if they are then I will be buying a few and taking off the meat for wraps, currries, chicken pasta bakes etc and using the carcass for stock. You might have more idea than I have if they are cheap enough to do that with? I often buy whole chickens from Woolies when they are $4.50 per kg and butcher them up ( cheaper that $10 per kg for meat) and freeze the carcass for later use/ broth etc.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  7 месяцев назад

      We bought a bunch I think trip before last, the $ per kg of meat was very good, I think I got a full kg of meat off each bird plus had the carcass! However, they’re very tasteless, pros and cons, but no seasoning on the skin or in the meat.

    Those bags of chicken wings are at least 20 dollars here a bag. The turkey rolls probably 25-30 dollars each and the chickens about 15 dollars each. You got a good deal with that plus the other meat and all of the other items! I am on the east coast of Canada.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад +1

      A lot of Canadian/American people have been commenting on the wings! I think because they aren't a specialty here they just aren't expensive, I worked it out and the equate to about $1.11usd/lb if I was to break down the cost of purchasing them at their current pricing at Coles!
      I tend not to cook them for the kids because I find there's a lot of wastage, they just aren't likely to strip the bones and there's not a lot of meat, the leftovers make great stock though! But the dogs benefit from the raw bones too, really good for their teeth!

    You've probably eaten the pomelos already, but when I lived in Singapore, we would just peel them and share segments (much like oranges/mandarines), but the segments are huge. Very much tastes like a sweeter grapefruit, not quite as bitter. Although yours are green so I'm not sure.

    Wow! 3.50/k asd is an amazing price for a whole chicken! I just love whole chickens!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  7 месяцев назад

      I just checked, because I'm sure they were more expensive which is why I stopped buying them, so apparenlty they were $5.50/kg in December, and are now $4.50/kg at Coles (though they must have been on special at the $3.50 which was why I was so tempted last month!). Hopefully they have specials like that regularly again.

      Oh, and at Woolworths, they are still $5.50/kg and $7-7.50/kg, so that definitely seems like they went up!

      I don’t think I’ve checked tbh! Because I do Aldi/coles the day before I go home I don’t normally buy much cold stuff from there, it just means carting it up the stairs to mums fridge for the night and then back down to the esky’s the next day! But I’ll have to check them out next trip :)

    You give your chicken wings to your dogs?! 🤕 Here in the American South, the WINGS are the best part!!! Put some Nando's Peri-Peri sauce on, and bake at 425-F. Mmm....best snack ever for sports events ⚽️🏈🏀

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад +1

      A lot of people have been saying that! :D. I wonder if the wings are slightly different too, like these have the tips attached, there's not a lot to eat on them, I find there ends up being a fair bit of wastage because my kids just aren't that into stripping the bones! The leftovers make great stock though! But the dogs need some raw bones for their teeth and they love wings, they just chomp through them as a treat. From what people are saying they're a lot cheaper cut here than there, probably because they aren't as popular, I worked out that at the moment they're about the equivalent of $1.11usd/lb.

      @@OurSmallFootprint Yes, chicken wings, the small drumsticks, and beef brisket have gone up dramatically in the past few years because people love cooking them so much for sports events and family get togethers. Lamb, too, but mostly because half of it is imported from NZ.

    Hey Nyssa have u ever thought about growing out some meat chickens we have just done some here in Mackay and they were huge at 8 weeks just a thought!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  6 месяцев назад

      For the moment, I think we're just going to stick with hatching and culling our excess hens/roosters. I think it works well to do that and do smaller batches 2/3 times a year than to do a run of meat chickens, there is a place I know that is only an hourish away that does sell them though, so they are an option!
