Its true even for bunnies. We have 2 mini lops .Bunniies are very sensitive to heat. We keep our house at 65 in summer. Their vet is almost 30 minutes away. It was not easy finding a vet for animals considered exotic. Also, we have their nails cut by a groomer. They were bever well socialized. The cost of spay/ beutering was not cheap either. So, please do not take these animals on if you cannot afford their upkeep.
The AC is my biggest concern. I'm in a rented appartment. Not sure how that'll work out. But...Chin's will be forbidden from July onwards in my country. Chin owners are fighting against that law though, so I'll wait to see if that law gets passed or not, then worry about it. But they're so awesome! I do hope I will be able to take care of a couple someday.
They are a BIG commitment. But if when you're ready to make that call on your own, it'll be so worth the wait! In the meantime, perhaps there's a local shelter or rescue for chinchillas you can volunteer at? Best wishes!💚
Hey so i got a free chinchilla from my dads friend (she just didnt have the time to care for her anymore and just wanted her to be close so she can visit) and I've been doing like a ton of research-does anyone have any general advice? I could really use it! I'm only used to ball pythons (slow, deaf) so this is gonna take some getting used to! 😅
Try to get a cold tile for your chinchilla to lay on in the cage so she can cool off during hot weather. Also if you can, get a fan and direct it at your chinchilla's cage from a good distance unless you can have A/C on to cool the room to 73 degrees and below. Keep your chinchilla fed but don't give too many snacks to it or it'll mess up its digestive system and they will have diarrhea. Never let it chew any plastic or wires because they can swallow some harmful objects. Get a vacuum to clean up the poop since their poop is mostly dry, and it's easy to clean up. Do not get your chinchilla wet or it can have infections because of how dense their fur is. If your chinchilla is wet you need to blow dry it, not just using a towel. Interact with your chinchilla more often because it doesn't have a companion chinchilla so it doesn't get depressed, unless you can get a 2nd chinchilla to live with it. If you do get a 2nd chinchilla, you need to take it 1 step at a time to introduce them to each other instead of just shoving the chinchillas together in the same cage. (Sorry for the long message)

Make sure to check on it from time to time though if it’s breathing heavily or a lot then it means you need to help cool it off more with a fan or A/C. Definitely can’t be above 73/74 degrees for the chinchilla.

Ok, while I'm problaly not getting a chinchilla, (but I do want one) Where I live it's really cold in the winter. But it's not really as insufferable as the Americans say. Buuut in the summer it's so hot that, well that you cant imagine how insufferable the summer is. And Americans say the summer is good here? No it isn't! It's worse than the winter! Lol.
