Coffee Table build Industrial Style

- Materials for this build were a section of re-claimed C Section Steel beam that I bought from the local tip, Reclaimed timber; Douglas Fir, Silky Oak and some Australian Hardwood (Extra Hard Variety). The Feet, truss, top edge band and band bolts I made from new Steel from my Local Supplier. I stained the timber using Black Japan. This was the first time I used this product and I found it hard to apply an even coat. Wipe on Wipe off. Clear coat was Wipe on Poly. I needed ten strong men to lift it into position! Actually it's not that heavy, though I made it to last. I got heaps of splinters during this build.....just in case you were wondering, and I couldn't fit all the detail in this video as it was already getting pretty long. Well after it is all said and done, I hope you found the build interesting, if not just click on another video. I'd be glad to see your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for watching.
If you would like to help me you can contribute at the link below :) / formeindustrious
Great video man-- I do a fair amount of industrial stuff, and it was nice to see your methods & style--subscribed :)
Thank you kindly sir! It's a privilege to have you on board, thanks.

As a professional red seal welder/ Millwright, I must say that I am impressed. I subscribed to your channel.
Thanks Walter, I have huge respect for the trades and so I try and produce something that is passable. My trade background is aircraft maintenance airframe and engines. Manufacturing is a whole other thing as you know. Huge thanks for the sub too Walter, all the best!!
Scott, gorgeous piece! Won't you have wood movement issues by boxing the wooden top in with steel?
Thank You! I hope not though it's possible. I sealed the word top and bottom, and I made the steel edge a fraction bigger so it was a slip fit. Time will tell I guess but so far so good. Cheers!
This is Art, very good work, design, and fabrication,... Awsome saludos...
Very much appreciated! Thank You Marcos.
Por cierto, me encanta cuando aparece tu mujer con los brazos cruzados delante de la puerta del garaje. Da igual el país, es reconocible qué están pensando, ¡ sean de donde sean!
Translate:By the way, I love it when your wife shows herself with crossing arms at the garage door. Doesnt matter the country, we can notice what is she thinking!
Its a beautifull table!
freaking brilliant, mate. i learn something from every one of your videos.
Awe shucks, thanks Tim.
Was your intro: "I'm going to build a coffee table" meant to be funny? I thought it was hilarious.
Hi Lloyd, umm yes. That bit was chopped out of a larger section of video that I did. I thought I crapped on too much and cut it all out except that bit and I thought, bugger it, that will do ;)
11:10 Bloody funny! Seen that look many times.....disapproving wife. I bet she has a lot 'more important jobs' you should be doing. I love the table, nice work!
It's always the depth that varies (as you know). Can't remember what I was in the shit for that time, but no doubt I forgot to do something. A Big Thanks!!
Complimenti...... Sei proprio bravo, e i tuoi lavori sono stupendi........io che sono "falegname"....... Stimo molto i tuoi lavori.... E l impegno

Once again, how does anybody thumbs down artwork like this that is so beautiful?!?!
Much appreciated, Thank You!! Well we are all different I suppose.
Nice table!
Glad you liked it, thank you!
Absolutely blown away by you... you do awesome work. Love this little coffee table. The band with the square bead bolts where top notch. Thank you for this.
Very glad you like it - thank you Jacob!
Very nice. If you're going to sell it, maybe you could charge by the pound, make more money. (looks heavy)
Thank You John, yeah it's a heavy sucker!
Awesome. You show some tips, that I never seen before. Thanks. Definitely subscribe.
Glad to hear that you found something that you can use, and a huge thank you for subscribing!
That is bloody beautiful. You sir are on another level 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Diesineveryfilm Customs you're making me blush. thank you for your encouragement. Have an awesome day!
Scott Turner haha. I'm so glad my good friend Tim sway sent me your direction I've just binge watched your stuff and love it all.
Very cool design. i like how you combine the two materials.
Glad you liked the build, cheers!
Hi! Can we know how many time did it take you?
3 - 4 casual week ends maybe, I never take count
-
What ya finish the metal in on the main frame to stop it rusting?
this one is not really cool, sorry
Another great build. Not sure why I hadn't subbed before.. but remedied that :)
On ya Merv! Cheers
I love this look! Well done!
Thanks Brandon. I think next time I will use some light gauge steel for the feet.
Whoever doesn’t like industrial made stuff, doesn’t appreciate history and the arts. Well made/good craftsmanship
Great comment Thank you!
"I'm going to make a coffee table".. Then he does it. No yabbering about how he built up to this or how he got into building or what it's like and other shite nobody cares about. All youtubers should take a lesson.
Love it - thanks!
Really like the look of this, such great work. What did you use to finish the steelwork?
In orange looks like a part of the golden Gate Bridge 😅😅😅👌👍👏
Love the Golden Gate Bridge, Thank you!
How Occa was that intro... 'I'm gunna make a coffee table' ...Full Stop.
Yup, well I crapped on for a bit and decided to cut that out and that was what I ended up with. Oh well.
hey nice table ,can you teĺl me what brand size plasma cutter is,cheers.
Hi Steve, my Plasma is a cheap Chinese import and it is not the best, I wish I put the money towards a better tool. Its a three in one, Tig/stick/ plasma called a rossi bought off Ebay. Thanks for your comment!
Awesome table! Subscriped to your channel!
Thank You Mike!!
It’s a pleasure to watch you work Scott you’re art is like 50 shades of grey to men my friend. Love it Scott thank you for sharing and please don’t stop.
I like it! Thanks Iain! I will have to watch that show one day.
Looks great! tables like this go for $thousands$ in the U. S.
Bryan Chittenden: thanks Bryan will have to see how wha I can sell it for next year. Thousands you say mmmmm 😀
Looks nice! What cooler did you use for the base? Looks really close to bare steel *_*
Hi and thank you. I used a paint that kind of had a steel blue look which I didn't like, so I used a light coat of black metallic charcoal over the top of that and it looked better.
Çok güzel... Kaynak makinası kötü, Tig Kaynak kullanılsa daha pürüzsüz estetik olurdu.
Thank you, yes TIG looks Prettier, though I'm happy with the MIG result on this industrial piece :)
Teşekkürler, evet TIG daha hoş görünüyor, gerçi bu sanayi parçasındaki MIG sonucundan memnunum :)
Прекрасная работа! Скотт, как вам удается получить такую поверхность столешницы? Какие материалы вы используете? Great job! Scott, how do you manage to get such a beautiful tabletop? What materials do you use?
Fantástica, qué buen trabajo!!! Enhorabuena.
Gracias por sus amables palabras
So, when the Wife stands there with her arms crossed like that....you know that it's time to go
It's just the depth that varies - you know!
Really Nice work - sure wont be the last video I've watched on your channel - your friends must hate you though when you ask them to help when you're moving to a different house - your stuff isn't exactly "ikea" when it comes to weight
Thanks Powermaennchen ! Build it to last is the plan. Have a great day and thanks again.
Heavy metal 🏋️♂️🤘. Об такой стол если запнешся, то кофе не расплещется, а нога сломается. 👍
Very heavy!
Cool design. Wish the middle zig zag joiner was not there
Thank you. There is always a fine line of too much and too little.
Just found your channel through tim Sway's! A lot of great stuff you've got on here man!!
Thanks Robin. Tim is the man! I have been working on a few projects of late. Gotta turn dreams and ideas into reality. Cheers
Scott your just plain assume, I love the way you make beautiful furniture out of metal. I can do that with wood but cannot out of metal, you my friend are a true craftsmen. I love the metal with the wood.
Thank you so much Barry! Where there is a will there is a way, cheers!
Scott, you are the MAN! I've learned tons of tricks just watching you form metal. This table was a joy to watch you build.
Maybe mine is next!
Glad that I can help and thank you; awesome comment! Do it and please send me a picture ;)
Hey Love your Stuff but I noticed that when your welding vertical, you're always welding up hill, Try to weld downhill on all your vertical welds when you're using a wire feed welder, it makes for better looking welds and is way faster cause you're not fighting gravity.
Thank you for the tip ZGERMAN. I have done uphill and downhill. I use a Christmas tree pattern going up, I was shown this tip from a welding mentor many years ago. Many ways to do the job I suppose :)
WHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!!! Scottie how did you get so much popularity on your channel in such short time?
Ho ho ho, had to laugh when I saw your comment. I'd like to think it's my good looks but my daughters tell me it's definitely not that. Um.......dunno, just keep doing what you love and keep posting. Hope you all are ok from the cyclone!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Thanks man well I guess it would all come down to how stunning the content is haha well I'm working on short films now that will only be uploaded if they are very good so I hope they will promote my channel. And yeah with the cyclone once it calms down Im going to make a sick short film about the cyclone with my friend
Can either hold your coffee or your car if you need to change the tire.
It can do both at once even!
Awesome, but way too advanced for me. :D
Cheers, glad you liked it, thanks.
to bulky heavy in design build . . . but interesting
Thanks Ross
Muito bom simples e engenhosa gostei do que fez com aqueles parafusos é no óleo né. Um abraço até mais.
Obrigado Douglas! Sim, eu usei óleo, trabalhe muito bem!
that is very cool, a welder is now moved closer to the top of my want list.
Hey Dave! Yep they stick things together fast. Thanks for your feed back.
süper bir çalışma başarılarının devamını diliyorum. Türkiyeden selamlar
Nazik ve cesaretlendirici mesajın için teşekkür ederim. Thank you for your kind and encouraging message!
Great job! But poor neighbors... :/
Thanks Rick and yes I agree. I'm a noisy critter
Fellow reclaimed audio fan from Australia right here (in Victoria) - nice table Scott - very cool stuff :)
It's a really good down to earth listen; the 3 re-claimerteers do a great job each week! Thanks Ted for your kind words, hey now that all the football is over, more time for making!
:)
Excellent & Beautiful Build Scott! I just found your channel! Subbed & Liked! I'm REALLY inspired by your Artistic Creations. Looking forward to seeing all your Videos! Have A Super Week!..... Gus
Thank You Gus for your kind comment! I'm glad you've got some inspiration from my work. Plenty more videos to come. Thank You for the like and the Sub, see you next time and have a great week also!
Hello, I'm Tiago José, Brazilian! Congratulations on your work, I admire your creations, I would like to know the power of your band saw motor and something else, how big is your lathe?
I want to enter this area and I need some guidance.
Thank you.
That's fantastic, I wonder how much it weighs
Thank You, quite a bit, I have never weighed it, guessing 30 kg (65lb)
Great work again, like it that you hand cut with the plasma, fair few makers on YT using plasmacams which are out of reach of most of us, and anyway, your handcutting is top and I think tends to highlight that your work is hand crafted.
Those table feet have given me an idea for the "feet" for one of my robot sculptures.
Thanks again Jaques. To be honest I am far from happy with my Plasma work, it's a bit hit and miss and I am have been experimenting with amps and air pressure but with practice I will get the hang of it. I do a lot of Bandsaw cutting still so I can cut right up to the line, but it is slow. Love to see a picture of your Robot Sculptures. All the best and thanks for your comment. P.S posting another video now for a different (curvey) coffee table
That is a very nice piece. I just started my own channel so I subscribed to yours to get inspiration.
oh that's great, and thank you for the sub!
Excelente Trabajo, Felicitaciones!!!!!!!!!
Muchas gracias!
nice work! (i hear Jimmy Diresta)
Hi Stephen, thanks: Making It Podcast ;)
Спасибо за идею, думаю и себе сделать подобный стол, но побольше, обеденный. Скотт, ты лучший!)
Да сделай это и отправь фотографии. Спасибо!
Great job.... I subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to more videos
Thank You! I have plenty of concept pieces that I will post on You Tube. Thank you for subscribing, see you next time.
Beautiful project! And exceptional craftsmanship.
I just thin the top is way too small for the collosal feet. Or is that just me?
Thank You. The top is 40mm thick by about 850 mm long by memory. It's all personal preference though the top could easily be bigger and look fine. I suppose there is nothing delicate about this table. Thanks for your comment!
Awesome! Wood and metal combination. A GREAT LOOKING table!!!
Thanks for the video.
....13
It was my pleasure, cheers!
Scott I just stumbled upon your video and I must say I am glad I did. Very nice project sir. How much time would you say you have into this project?
G'day Jim, Thank you! All of my videos are Off the Cuff" so to speak so you have to work out what to do and that takes time. This build took my about 4 maybe 5 days part time work. If I had to do it again I would be much quicker. Thanks for your comment!
Really nice Job!
This is a world war proof table!
One question... how much does it weight?
Thanks Martin. My guess is it weighs around 25 to 30 kg. Yes it should well and truly out last me :)
Dear Scott, I find your table breath taking beautiful. Most excellent I must say. Thanks for the vid. pierre from New Mexico
Hi pierre5325, such kind words thank you so much and I'm glad you liked the video! All the best!
Hi, new subscriber here. This has got to be the coolest channel I've come across so far because you incorporate metal into your woodworkings. These videos leave me speechless. Now this is furniture! Do you plan on selling these items?
Hi Megan, huge thanks for your feedback, I very much appreciate it! All the pieces I have made so far are from my sketch pad and are concepts. Yes I do want to sell some of the pieces along the way, but ultimately I would like a coffee shop filled with my projects - unique, a little different and interesting I hope. I have dreams.....
Great job, congratulations. I also do things like you and I want to do that same table because it fascinated me. Would you pass the approximate measures you have ?? Thank you from Argentina ...
Hi Claudio, thank you! 910mm long, 450mm wide, 460mm high but really you can make what ever size you prefer, and good luck with your build. Please send me a picture when you are done if you can, thanks.
11:10 the moment when your hobby makes you feel guilty:)
:) never!
very well done blew my mind you got serious SKILS!!!!!INSPIRED ME THANKyou
Hi Bob, thank you for your kind words! All the best!
Very good but very good your coffee table !!!!
Thanks for such beautiful videos
Glad you like it, thanks for your support and comment! All the best.
Excellent work. I am inspired by your design for my own table project. Thanks for sharing.
Great, hope you send me a picture when you are done! Thanks for your comment and all the best!
I love the design!! Looks Great but in my opinion the table would have looked better without the brace attaching the legs. But still, looks awesome!
Thank You Andrey, I appreciate your feedback!
There's a lot of work in that. Must weigh a tonne! Wasn't sure on the stained top at first but it quickly suited the project & came up shmick. 👍
Being a concept piece, it always takes much longer to work out what you want and how to do it. Doing it again would be quicker but still you are right it's still quite a bit of work. It's heavy yes but probably lighter than you think. The Black Japan was a gamble and I am happy how it turned out, kind of suites the piece but it wouldn't work for everything. Thanks again for your comment and feed back Damo!
Excellent job man! I do really like bomb proof makings! I enjoyed your techniques a lot! subscribed !
This one is bomb proof for sure! Thank you!
Do you need to sand the wood if you put poly on it
Sanding is not a must though I wanted to remove tooling marks and get a really smooth finish. I sanded the top up to 600 grit. If you want a more rustic look perhaps you could skip sanding. Thanks for your comment!
You are quite a craftsman and enjoyed watching you assenble your beautiful table. It's kink of steampunk in design. Very nice!
Many thanks!!
Scott..you're freaking awesome . .I watch you'r videos beggining to end...I will admit..I say to my self"..I wanna try that..little trick he does.."..blue in the bolts!!!..my macho!!
Made my day! Thank you so much!
Beautiful. It reminds me of an old bridge.
Thanks Michael!
One of the best designs and build I have seen on RUclips Very nicely done
Thank You bart MAN, ;)
Awesome work. I like your modification on the bolts.
Hi Beau, thank you! The bolts I made from square mm solid bar drilling and welding in steel rod about 8mm. Rounded the tops over later. Thanks for your comment and encouragement, cheers.
Hey Scott. Do you realize someone is posting your youtube channel as content on peoples videos regarding the deaths of their kids during 911? I'll assume its your kids who are doing it but still, its very sick. You need to give them a slap on the ass or something. Here is what they posted on mulitple videos from families telling their stories about their children dying during 911. xmassan20906 Whatever this link is..........its angering a lot of families on the internet. Thought you might want to know about it.
Russell, this is of serious concern to me, and to tell you the truth I'm totally confused also. Can you provide any more detail. I've looked up that link and can't see anything (though I'm no expert) Your assumption about it being my kids is just wrong too. Please be more specific.
I figured you had no idea. Go here. ruclips.net/user/xmassan20906 Your videos are in combination with some very strange videos that don't seem to be posted by you.
I go to that link and there are no videos posted, just liked ones and nothing that looks strange. Can you please post me a link to the video that you are talking about?
Man that is impressive. I need to build some of this industrial style furniture. It certainly looks good . Subscribed.
Cheers Mark, once you have the bug it's hard to stop. Thanks for the Sub!! Another video coming out hopefully in a week, doing an industrial office chair.
Very Nice 👍🏽🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷😀
Thank you Francisco!
Am gona make a coffee table! Hell yeah!
Told ya ;)
Hermoso trabajo saludos desde Chile
¡Gracias por sus amables palabras!
You are very resourceful I like it!
Thanks, all part of the joy of making!
Wow so much work!! Beautiful table!!
Thank you Timothy! Yes lots of work but worth it in the end.
Scott Turner definitely
This is one of the coolest Coffee Table builds I have ever seen.
That's a wonderful complement, Thank You!!
Damn it, I watched it one day too early. It's got a perfect Sunday tempo. I really really like the latticework and blueing of bolts.. thanks dude. I might have to watch it again tomorrow.
MakerMonkey better too early than not at all ;). hey great comment, thanks!
Dry cutting steel? Must have lots of cash for new saw blades. He wonders why it took so long lol.
Hit the wrong button, what are you a spelling teacher just answer the question Prof .
awesome job! nice details...
Glad you like it, thanks again!
Good job man. Like from Russia
Thank you!
being a welder by trade and knowing that everyone has their own preferred way of welding, I personally would have used a different process maybe tig or possibly oxy acetylene. but that being said you built yourself an amazing table. love the finish and the design. just subscribed and can't wait to see more from you. awesome job.
cheers
Hi Sheldon, I would love to give Tig a try one day though I would need to set up for that. Oxy maybe as it has other uses also. Thanks for your great comment Sheldon and I'll see you next time.
I saw Your other vdeos and they are awesome. But this one is totally sick, mate! :D Love it, great job!
Thanks Sebastian! Oh she was probably just checking that I was wasn't on the bludge :) cheers!
you are A W E S O M E .
Love your work..
Awesome comment, Thank You!!
Awesome! So glad I found and subscribed to your channel great work!
Excellent, welcome aboard and Thank You!
I like it! the only thing I would of done different is drill some holes in the C channel just to visually lighten it up,and give it a little more design element.
So you have any info on the shaping the bolt heads and the bluing process?
You should try a table with legs made like the truss.
I made the bolts from 8mm rod and 20 mm square bar. Cut down the bar to bolt head size, drill a 8mm hole and weld the rod in at the top. I put the rod shank in my Batt Drill and used the Linisher to round over. Blueing is just heating the steel up, experiment with temperature as I'm no expert, and dunk the smell in oil. Do it in a well ventilated area as it will smoke up. Blueing protects from rust and looks cool.
My builds are concepts with many variations possible. At the time of this build I didn't have a metal hole-saw. Thanks for your comment James, all the best.
Looks very industrial indeed, good job man!
G'day FinnCrafted, thank you!! Yes I have the "industrial look" bug pretty bad at the moment. I appreciate your comment! See you next time.
the fact that you used a chunk of wood to bend that steel, I would never have thought that would have worked, amazing job!!
Thanks Kale, yes it was "hard wood" and it was an experiment that worked on this occasion. Thanks for the comment!
First video I've watched of yours and I subscribed. Excellent work! Now off to watch the rest.
G'day Ian; Glad you liked it and hoping you find something in the others too. I'm trying to make my video's less crappy these days. Also, thanks for subscribing!
Really nice result man. Did you just tac on some steel flat stock cuts to threaded rod for the bolts?
Thank You! For the bolts I cut the bolt heads from 20 mm square solid bar (about 12 mm from memory), then drilled a 8 mm hole in that, then cut down some 8 mm rod, put it in the bolt head hole, welded it then linished the heads to have a rounded appearance. I went this way as I didn't want 6 sided bolts, and I'm a gluten for punishment.
Worth the effort dude. Was the rod glued into the timber?
Yes I drilled the wood and glued in the bolts, I should have threaded the bolts really. The would have self tapped the hole in the wood. Though it all worked out well as the bolts had to hammered in I suppose. Be good.
That is a beautiful piece of work! Super combination of the materials
Thank you Dave. It's solid, that's for sure!
