It will not work as well without the essential oil, but perhaps you could try using the zest of an orange peel (which contains the essential oil). Let us know how it works.

Only thing I ever use is oil by itself, let it sit for a bit to soften the adhesive then scrub and wash as usual. Always works no baking soda or essential oils needed.
