Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a laboratory technique to detect amplification of certain genes. For example, in breast cancer we want to know if the her2 gene is amplified. In other tumor types we look for amplification of other genes. Research has shown that amplification of some genes leads to worse prognosis, and in some cases we can use those genetic alterations as therapeutic targets.
