Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. Alien from outer space. Black Dooms race isn't really touched on besides them being aliens wanting to take over earth for a new home base from the Shadow The hedgehog game that and Black Dooms help using his blood/DNA to help make Shadow

They got away with showing a bullet wound on a kid through abstraction.
The lighting strike being the gun shot is also really clever

I thought that was always implied, because every time we see her death she's holding her chest.

7:24 I don’t think Shadow believes that Professor Gerald has survived in this scene. Rather he wonders if Black Doom is still alive. Considering near the end of Shadow’s vision, we see Black Doom’s silhouette reaching out from the clouds.
This prologue as a whole was really phenomenal. The animation quality was gorgeous. The music and atmosphere were really on point. And the voice acting was great. Kirk Thorton has really nailed voicing Shadow lately. Goes to show the importance of good writing and direction. Looking forward to watching the 2nd and 3rd parts when those release.

Nah I think he’s talking about Gerald. Even in the movie they tease Gerald in the trailer so I’m guessing he never died which would be crazy. They never did show what they did to him back in the day. We just assumed he died
@@kennyg3055 this is 100% wrong lol. First of all the upcoming movie has nothing to do with the games. Just because Gerald is potentially alive in the movie, doesn’t mean he’s alive in the video games.

@@maskedreview No, he's talking about his memory sequence, it has nothing to do with time being out of whack. In his memories things start happening too soon, so quickly he realizes something is wrong. At first he just believes this is the event as it originally happened, then he realizes someone is messing with his mind. Then he wakes up and blows up the tree.
Its very clear at that point the whole thing happened in his head. He didn't start realizing something was wrong, though, until everything started jumping around too fast.
Everything about the animation has so much attention to detail, you can HEAR Maria's congestion in her line deliveries (More emphasis on her being sick)

One very important moment you glossed over was during the final moments of the dream sequence was Maria's shattering image saying, _"SHADOW, REMEMBER!"_
Depending on how the story goes, I believe this single 2 word sentence has HUGE potential for Shadow's character going forward.
To me that comes off as Black Doom is still trying to manipulate shadow, still trying to exploit any lingering feelings of hatred or resentment towards to world

7:40 The chill/somber track that’s playing is actually a new remix of Throw it All Away. I noticed it when I went back through the credits and saw that the song is mentioned in there. After reading it and listening carefully to the piano playing, that’s definitely Throw it All Away.

Even with an amazing fight scene with Emerl, the shot of Maria's death is by FAR my favourite image from this anime. It's going to be iconic, I know it.
Its just episode 1 and that alone is 🔥 hyped to see future episodes

Heck seeing both my boys shadow the hedgehog and emerald my favorite robot from sonic battles video game was really amazing and badass in my opinion.
You mention how they show Maria's death without any irony. Well, this makes me wonder, will the movie do the same thing. Will they write it in a way that actually makes us care about her death. Instead of all of the cheering and #capthatkid -ing that we all say we are going to do, will we be struck silent by the tragedy. Makes you wonder

I love the implication that Shadow Gens is indeed the next installation in the franchise, with present day Shadow. And his time travel shenanigans just so happen to intersect with Sonic, during his. It would make sense why he's in Sunset Heights and Chaos Island 🤔 side note, the Pup model having functional pockets is very impressive
What I learned from episode 1 of Shadow Dark Beginnings: Shadow is really, REEEEEEALLY afraid of long hallways🫣🥺
A hallway that infinitely extends while you run on it simultaneously is inherently frightening.

Part 1
Hello there, I hope someone sees this, but two words, TIME EATER. I have yet to see anyone mention the fact that in the trailer, when he breaks through the game, he's like full-on laughing, looking up, and even actually making sound. I bring this up for two reasons, They clearly want to tie loose ends and flesh out some things, and so why would time eater be any different. Secondly, this is the most significantly conveying thing we've really seen him do, like he's never really shown emotion like at all. But this also brings the point that one doom egg might be like a bowser's fury thing, and also, you wanna know what happens when Mephiles, Black Doom, and Time Eater walk in a room.
Part 2
I know what I'm going to say can be summed as bad writing, but they could still cook with this. At the end of the game, Sonic and the gang go back at the exact moment they left time travel, including the classics. They (classics) end up going back to their time by the same purple time eater portal thing. And Eggman, well, they both were still stuck in that limbo space. I think you get my point. I hope they can kind of answer this.
This is what i want from Sonic. For it to take itself seriously and not pull any punches. I'm so happy they are going all in. Frontiers was the first step. X Shadow generations is going to be a leap.
Its both really happy and sad that Maria finally got the screen-time she deserved, and her collapsing at the illness was... heart-wrenching.
And that fight scene, just, sound effects and motion, so fucking peak.
Even tho were probably getting less then 20 minutes of shorts from this, these are some GOATED shorts, glad we're getting em
kinda surprised that more people didn't realize that in the scene where they're running from gun, it's always been shadow pulling maria along, but since its the other way around here, it definitely wasn't going to be that scene
This does really strengthen Maria and Shadow's dynamic.
It also shows Shadow's difficulty of finding a purpose first hand is an early issue, I mean imagine being created for one purpose, everyone hypes you up for it and then, through no fault of your own you are unable to complete it? Are you a failure? Even if it's not your fault? Is there anything you can do at all to make up for it? That's the kind of thoughts Shadow has to resonate with with not able to cure Maria.
While on the flip-side, for Maria maybe, although Shadow was not able to cure her, he has helped her more than he gives himself credit for. The way she lights up being in his company, while it's not a cure it does give her a more positive state of mind, a way to take her mind off her terminal illness, to have a friend even in her short life. So in a round about way, maybe Shadow's presence as her friend did have a postive aspect on her health, which makes the G.U.N incident all the more tragic.
This episode was so perfect and perfectly explained the most important past of shadow and IT NAILED IT! THIS WAS SO PEAK!
This was really good as this Explores Shadow’s Past with him sensing that’s tampering with Reality, we get the Half Moon that’s not RWBY, and his relationship with Maria is so Wholesome and Heartbreaking you wish she had Survived and you wonder is he was Referring to Doom or Emerl? It’s obviously Doom.
and what’s crazy emeral isn’t just learning new moves, he’s learning to block oncoming moves.
15:16 Sonic’s ideal maturity level in my eyes should always match Nickelodeon & Cartoon Network’s more mature shows like ATLA, Teen Titans, Regular Show, Young Justice, etc. and even mNy if Disney’s animated movies, especially the likes of The Incredibles. They don’t condescend with the drama too much to their audience, rely on characters acting their age, and emotional beats that sell the story and care about it.
Had it been T rated in Shadow the Hedgehog, yeah...

This should be the standard for all Shadow depictions from now on. If it doesn't pass the bar this has set, it shouldn't be made!
This animation was amazing!
I kinda like how certain interactions from this short was previously shown in the first chapter of the Corocoro manga.
Within less than 6 minutes, they managed to establish Shadow and Maria's relationship, actually depict Maria's illness, show Shadow's loyalty to the professor, abstractly depict Maria being gunned down, and show how much these memories haunt Shadow. The last one being kinda horrifying because his reaction from awakening from the nightmare is to bolt onto his feet, rapidly charge up a chaos emerald, and shoot as beam of energy with the intent of killing anything there but was thankfully just an old ancient tree being cut clean. He is visibly and audibly panting like he put a lot of energy into that attack and his mind trying to calm down and rationalize the situation.
It is hard to not feel bad for Shadow and we only got to see a sample of the memories that torment him, which scares me.

I think the short goes a long way to actually point out WHY Shadow is so stoic and doesn't make friends. And if you can spare your self a second to divorce yourself from the "Ha ha Low Poly Animals having trauma" mindset you'll see quite a tragic story. He was born to be an immortal life form that can be used as a tool to cure any illness. In this fragmented memory, he confessed to Maria how he felt like he didn't have a place on Earth, but his place on the Ark is just as bad. He's being used as a tool to save lives, without the genius of Gerald, what is he? So he clings to the idea of being the Ultimate Lifeform. It's his only identity when he loses his purpose with the death of Gerald. But to Maria, he wasn't a tool. He was a friend. One she could drag around. One who loved her dearly. A fuzzy member of her family. Just because he was born for her sake, didn't change how she treated him. To him, she was his "place in the world." And he lost it when she died.
And while it was without Irony, her death portrayed here is also without compassion. In Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. We don't have context of where she was shot, really. In Sonic X animated series, We see one hesitant soldier shoot her with a pistol. In the comics, at most one blast to her back. But in all instances, we see GUN with Automatic weapons for all other cases. Here we have the actual context. The First flash we see is when she touches him during the Emerl scene, and there are six soldiers aiming their rifles at the camera. In the clouds in the last segment of the nightmare, she is running from soldiers who aren't hesitant. Who aren't just executing with one bullet. They're firing automatic rifles at her, each flash of lightning is followed by repeated flashes of light from the soldier's weapons. And he was forced to watch because she was trying to save him.
All of this in mind, with Shadow having to see the only person who saw him as a friend gunned down, and every single person before and after her only seeing him as a tool- An Asset, to be used when needed. Gerald wanted to use him as a cure, and after Maria's death as a weapon. Gun only saw him as a tool against Black Doom. Eggman only wanted to use him to conquer the Earth, and later made clones of him to use as weapons. Black Doom helped make him so Black Doom could use him to conquer the Earth. GUN, after all this horror comes to light, only hires him to use him as an agent. He doesn't have Friends, He has coworkers. Now tell me why he shouldn't want to be left alone or why he shouldn't be so depressed.
The song in the end credits is actually shown listed titled "Throw It All Away (Retrospective Ver.) remixed by Gwiz
I was surprised to hear a song very somber until I looked into the credits to find it's Shadow's first theme song in Adventure 2, now I wanna hear the full thing.

I loved the Archie Sonic comic's. Especially when Ian flynn took over as the writer back in 2007, and I liked how they were mostly doing their own thing.
I think it's good for different incarnations to do different things to make em stand out. Similarly like how franchise's like Spiderman and TMNT do all the time.
Ngl, the short made me want to see Shadow and Maria enjoying their time together b4 the G.U.N. raid that kickstarts everything.

I'm suprised you didn't mention line at the part where she gets shot. "Shadow, remember!" Or, in the Japanese version (translated) "Shadow, don't forget!" I think it lays some mystery as to why she said that in particular.

shadow not being allowed to feel warmth and love is the EXACT reason why i love the sonadow ship, shhadow feeling like he has no place on earth, he struggles to find comfort and happiness, and then he goes on adventures with sonic, and then some more, he finds comfort in his presence and then eventually he has a home, and a kid (sometimes) hes happy, and i love it being specifically sonic because sonic was the first person to stand in his way, the first person to threaten hope of happiness on earth, and now theyre in love and its sweet and cute
i understand that people dont like sonadow, but please dont attack me for talking about it, thhese points can be applied to a ship with any character, or no ship at all, shadow can find happiness on earth if its just platonic, but i like sonadow and wanted to talk about it :)

I'm not in love with this short: I'm not as into the 2D-traced-3D look so much as the pure 2D of Mania Adventures/Knuckles Divergence or the pure 3D of Marza, and the more anime-adjacent things like the lip-flaps, looped animations, and certain instances of character acting aren't to my taste, but I can appreciate how much more ambitious this project is compared to other shorts, as well as how much it utilizes Shadow's history rather than being a standalone narrative or just throwing in nostalgia for nostalgia. I think if this were more in line with Marza's work in Sonic Unleashed while still keeping the emotional beats and dreadful moments, I'd be more into it, but I'm still happy a project like this can exist.

while i get that the idea of a franchise called "Sonic the Hedgehog" getting that grim is kinda silly in the grand scheme of things I never found the idea of Maria getting shot THAT funny. it's a bit overkill at most. not really tears in your eyes funny. but with that that being said I think this is actually the first time I found myself getting emotional over Shadow's backstory/trauma. Sonic team can get a lot of things right if they just apply theirself

Even as an american. It released at 8PM for me. I was expecting it around maybe noon. Or 3pm. But nah. 8 at night lol. And even people on the other side of the country in California or something is only a 3 hour difference. So it would Still be like 5pm. Dinner time for most people I know. Across the board it was way too late. So i agree in that regard. I legit thought they forgot or it was a typo meant to be the 26th. I even texted my buddy at around 7:50pm, if this doesnt drop in the next 10 minutes im gonna assume it was a mistake and go do something else. Lol

Jokes aside, the people who worked on the animation did a fantastic job. And Kirk did a better job voicing Shadow. He does not sound like he is trying too hard to be edgy. Overall, I like the direction they are taking Shadow.
The animation is not fully 3d
It is just 'on model' which means that the drawings are drawn to look more 3d than 2d
Many anime do this to show a high quality
Again this is not 3d just on model many background elements are 3d but Maria and shadow and all the characters are not 3d

it is mostly 3d, with some kind of shader that makes it appear more 2d. there are also 2d animated bits in the animation as well, like maria's hair when shadow is skating away from her, and the fire surrounding emerl. but most of it is 3d animation.

I think people were joking on Maria's death because we didn't really knew her, their relationships never was properly developed. I mean how thry expect us to care if we never knew what was really lost when she died?
