In my opinion sleep deprivation can hurt you more than any short term use of a benzo could. Sleep deprivation can literally make some people kill themselves and feel so sad anxious and psychotic. Dependence may be better than the sleep deprivation.
I have suffered from insomnia for most of my life, I’m ADHD, 60 years old and have been off ambian for 1.5 years now, after 22 years of taking it daily. Not easy to get off , I was having severe memory loss, And took myself off! For some reason that upset one of the Dr. Who prescribed it for me. Then after going off I had Restless Legs syndrome for three months after. Our Dr seem to not understand insomnia, which ADHD or know how to treat it. This is helpful. Thank you so much.
I know that the insomnia is one of the worst elements of my depression. My doctor eventually prescribed Mirtazapine and I found that not only did it help during the day it knocked me out for eight hours of deep sleep at bedtime. I think that the sleep helped me more than anything. Waking up feeling rested instead of exhausted can only be how it should be, surely? Now I do a lot of the things you say. Cool, pitch black bedroom. Heavy sheets and blankets. Getting up and getting busy on my days off work instead of staying in bed. Finally, lots of exercise, water and a cleaner diet. No stimulants such as coffee or Internet before bed. All these help me sleep properly and at one point in my life I thought I'd never be able to sleep properly. Thanks, Doug!
@@DouglasBloch Thank you. My Healing from Depression arrived today. It's very comprehensive! There's a lot to it. I'm very much looking forward to reading it and learning from it in the next few weeks. Thanks again!
@@jasonm9825 I'm currently alternating 15mg every other day with the occasional two day stretch between doses. A couple of times each week I will break one in half and take 7.5mg. This is in an effort to get me off them. I've slowly ramped myself down to this over a period of time. I plan, with advice from my GP, to increase the gap between doses and with a lower dose itself. Eventually I will be taking 7.5mg every few days until I take none at all. During a bad period last year I was on 45mg each day. A couple of years ago I was on 60mg a day. I find this drug helps during the worst times of my depression. It makes me sleep, I wake up refreshed and my mood is elevated during the waking hours. When I say elevated I mean that the edge is taken off. They don't actually make you happy! They help you to cope. I have not experienced any detrimental effects in taking them but only benefits. I tried Cipramil a number of years ago but found they made my depression worse, kept me awake and wired and were generally nasty. Other people have experienced good results on Cipramil so it just goes to show that what works for one might not work for another person. My goal is zero medication but other methods to cope with my depression. Good luck!
@@veritasvincit2745 excellent reply. Thank you! I've been prescribed 15mg a day but was considering taking double of that to see what difference it makes. I'm new to it so there's that, maybe I should take it easy as per your experience. Tough one...
This video really gave me some hope. I think the fact that YOU have actually taken some of these medications and have suffered from Insomnia can really provide comfort to those freaking out about there lack of sleep. Great video!
I’ve suffered with insomnia for many years and Ambien 10mg stopped working for me so my phych dr increased it to 20 mg, (2 10 mg,) but then he stoped prescribing it because after a cpl of years it wasn’t working very well. I researched non-stop because I was so exhausted and desperate and came across very interesting information so I gave it a shot. It says most people who suffer w this are usually not getting enough oxygen to the brain and they did a study on how nitric oxide helped get the blood supply to the brain. So of course I had to try it and I was in awe when I started this. I purchased it at a local health store that sells all kinds of vitamins and supplements. It works!! I’m so glad I came across this article. Best of luck to you.
Great video. You categorized the medication and I understand why my doctors prescribed them. It is 2am a d I'm on youtube. I have dealt with insomnia since I got out of the millitary in 2001. Thank you very much.
Hello Douglas, hello everyone. After TMS, 6 months of Venlafaxine, along with various complements such as Lyrica, Ritalin, I am feeling I really lost the battle. I am a single mom of 2 young children, living in Belgium for 18 years, and all my family back in Brazil, far away from me. Friends are very volatile, sometimes reliable, sometimes apathic, as they've got their own issues already. We are midst of a self-centered times, where no one cares but for their own sake. In Brazil we got a more empathetic attitude towards one another, and we are not afraid to intervene, to help, to literally stand at each others door uninvited, yet always welcome. This is miss so much. I cannot return to my home country because my both children's dads are Belgians and they are never willing to let me move back to Brazil. At the same time, I'm already a Belgian citizen since long. I am out of work for 4 months on sickness, as I'm totally unable to handle household, children and fulltime work with 3 to 4 hours daily comute. I feel I gotta give it all up. My name is Catia and I Live in Landen, Belgium. I'm 38 years old. Please pray for me. Please. God bless you all.
Three members of my family, including myself. I also went to rehab. I am bipolar, and have serious insomnia. I take ambien, and am grateful for this medication. I feel great during the day. Once I am asleep, I stay asleep for 8 hours.
AW Douglas! I love watching videos before bed! :D haha! I take benedryl and klonopin before bed, and after trying to get off of them and not sleeping for a week, I went back on them just so I could get my head back on straight, it was TERRIBLE experience. My sleep coach also told me to get a RED alarm clock, not blue, green, or any other color, because red doesn't trigger your brain to stop making melatonin, the "sleepy stuff" that your brain uses. He said if I had a blue/green/white alarm clock, it would trigger my brain to stop making melatonin to help me sleep, it was a very interesting 1 day class (4 hours) I took on sleep hygiene! Also, turn your alarm clock away from you so you don't look at it every time you wake up, it adds to the "anxiety" of not sleeping properly, and NO electronics in the bedroom except the "red alarm clock facing the wall and not towards me" Hopefully more helpful information for us insomniacs out there! SLEEP WELL EVERYONE :)
Not getting sleep is more harmful than some sleeping medication. I’d rather take my Xanax than not be able to sleep, hope to find something that would last longer in the benzodiazepines. Xanax is great for anxiety it helps very fast and is the best for myself personally speaking.
I’m low on my trazodone but recently have built up a tolerance…need to suggest to my doctor a better meds…i have a 2 yr old and can’t afford to miss sleep.
I have tinnitus also. Literally everybody will at some point habituate to their tinnitus. It wont go away but you'll learn to sleep and feel happy again. Dont worry. Look up tinnitus and habituation. Itll help you tremendously. I have health anxiety and the thought of it never going away scared me to death. I made it though. I made it through and so can you.
Ever Since I started adulthood, I couldn`t sleep well. I began this sleep program *4InsomniaCure. Com* 1 week ago and found good improvements in my sleep. I slept for 8 hours last night, for the first time in ages. This program`s simply wonderful. I read about the causes of insomnia and various ways to cure it. So you could select what works for you.?
@@TheHondarider35924 is right. I also have moderate tinnitus in one ear and at first it was bothering me a lot. After a while your brain gets used to it. It learns to ignore it but it doesn't mean you'll be back to normal. I still miss the days I could go to sleep in total silence because now I need to listen to something until I pass out and I'm trying different sleep medicines.
I used zolpidem for 24 years. Weaned myself off, perhaps a bit too fast. It is one year later and I still battle severe insomnia. I rotate melatonin with antihistamine, doesn't always help. I've had torturous nights. Calming music etc. But not once have I had a decent nights sleep. Will never use a benzo. I'm frustrated, depressed and really not doing well. Antidepressants make me gain weight. I'm at a loss..
You might want to talk with your prescriber about another option, very small doses of some antidepressants can really help a person sleep. You might also want to evaluated at a sleep clinic
I was prescribed klonapin for severe anxiety with panic attacks, and doxepin for sleep. Got them yesterday, haven’t needed to take a klonapin yet, but I did take a doxepin last night, it seemed like it made my brain quiet so I could really focus on sleep. I did take an ambien a few nights ago and I was OUT in 25 minutes after taking it.

I had massive withdrawal symptoms stopping amitriptyline , which lasted a year. Antidepressants are totally addictive and habit forming don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm not saying they can't be helpful, but they are addictive and habit forming, and most people have severe cessation withdrawal.
You are correct. Sometimes benzodiazepines are used for sleep, although some psychiatrists do not like to prescribe them because they are habit forming and people develop tolerance. It seems like the medication is working for you
Any updates? I just got prescribed 1mg for sleep. I was a bad alcoholic for years and want to reset my sleeping patterns. Do you think I'll be alright on occasion to take this
Hello Douglas,I've been prescribed Amitryptiline and it is the only drug that works for me,however it works when I use doses that are associated with high heart rate. What's your experience with that?Did you get as well and if it happened,is it sonething to be concerned about?Looking forward to your reply
I only take 10 mg of amitriptyline at night, so I don't have any side effects. If your heart rate has increased you should definitely talk to your Doctor who prescribed the medication. There are two other medications call Remeron and trazodone which also can be effective for sleep. They are not habit-forming. You can ask about those
Hi Douglas, did you say you have taken trazadone for 15 yrs for sleep? And it has worked fine the entire time? I'm thinking of taking a sleep med for long term.
there's one more class of medicines which were used for insomnia which are addictive and can also prove fatal in withdrawal, not mentioned here, and they are the Barbiturates, very common in the 50s and 60s but were replaced by the Benzodiazepines because Barbiturates are lethal at doses not too much greater than the therapeutic dose. I would say the most sedating medication of the Tricyclic Antidepressant class discussed here is definitely Amitriptyline, followed by Dosulepin, then probably Doxepin but they aren't pleasant but will help sleep. Amitriptyline is a very long acting drug too. I'm on 75mg
@@MariaReyes-jp4lb one or the other really, although if you take two drugs of the same class, you're more likely to experience side effects like sedation

I've had insomnia way before I got diagnosed with a severe deep depression disorder when I was 8. I was born with Insomnia and as i got older, the Insomnia got worse. By age 13 my brain could not send itself to be unconscious. I only manage falling asleep for horrific sleep, jumbles me, scares me, deprives any remaining energy in me, and only when im sick in certain ways. Otherwise i need the amount of drugs that i when bored went to compare the average sedation to date rape drugs, my medications were over 3 times more potent than average date rape drugs. Pretty sure my depression happened because of my insomnia that is clearly supported by the design of my brain :/

You would need to see your doctor. Lunesta generic is very good and you can stop without any bad withdrawal. But if you have real long term insomnia I suggest seeing a medication psychiatrist that specializes in medication management and treatment diagnosis of your issues. It will be life saver if you do. If you have addiction problems please seek a medication management psychiatrist that will help get you diagnosed for the right meds for depression and traumas. God bless.

My doctor prescribed Trazodone for my insomnia and anxiety many years ago, and I stop using them because stop working and I was constantly increasing the dose. Recently I started taking them again because of a death in my family. I took 25 mg for a week and stop. I never felt worse in my life. The insomnia got worse and then three days later I decided to take it again, but in a reduced dose (10mg) for anorher week, that helped with the withdrawal symptoms (symptoms like flu, Itchiness, restless leg sindrome, insomnia, bad memory, irritation, etc) and them I stop for good. Now I can't have a restful sleep, no deep sleep for me... Can't work properly, don't remember anything and my irritation levels are through the roof. So for me Trazodone DOES have severe withdrawal symptoms. P. S- in my country doctors in the national health system don't care about withdrawal symptoms and do not monitor the weaning of the drugs, according to many of them you can stay on the medication for the rest of your life...

I can't comment on the medication you are on. I do know, however, that the antidepressant Luvox has been approved for helping with obsessive disorders and has helped some of my group members, Talk to your doctor about it. My Dr. stopped prescribing Ambien when the Gov't said it is a controlled substance. Wish i still could get it because it was the only thing that actually helped me to sleep.
I’m 55 years old and I’m about to loose my mind over lack of sleep. I took Ambien about 15 years ago and it worked like a charm. I don’t want to take some medication that might have a side effect that might make me sleep. Why don’t they just treat the problem anymore?
Thanks for the advice. I have very bad insomnia and I had an unsuccessful sleep study. I was told I was well rested and needed only 5 hours. I couldn't read and now i fear my insomnia is not real. I couldn't read and lost my appetite which affected my physical health. As a result I don't find it appropriate to take anti anxiety meds mollipaxen as I believe normal to low brainwaves indicate no anxiety. I'm autistic and a literally thinker so things are difficult. If I didn't sleep for much longer I would consider it but where is the evidence? I'm going to hold meeting with counsellor and my gp about best way forward. Tried amitrytapine and it made me feel overestimated and not rested.Trying melatonin first. Night meds once a month does seem like a good idea though.
Anyone else on Trazodone? I'm on 100mg and I'm not to sure if the pros outweigh the cons yet. I need something to help with my constant thinking and anxiety which keeps me from falling asleep. My mind won't shut off and let me feel mentally relaxed enough to sleep. Can anyone relate and tell me what medication cured your insomnia?
I'm not making a recommendation, but I have found an Ambien has helped me. I also find that counting backwards from 100 to 1 as I visualize sheep jumping over a stream on a local beach helps me to fall asleep.
Trazodone doesn't work for me either. Have tried a zillion other medications from different classes and nothing does a thing. I gave up and have started Ambien and Lunesta (rotating). I got sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

You don’t look a day over 50 Doug. Really. I know you suffer from anxiety and anxiety is supposed to rapidly increase the aging process but somehow for you it hasn’t and that’s great.
My father remained young looking. Fortunately I have avoided excessive drugs and alcohol and I’ve tried to take care of myself, even when I was depressed
I have been on Seroquel, Gabapentin, Trazodone, Ambien, a variety of Benzos, Mirtazapine, Paxil, Lamictal, Wellbutrin, Abilify, Lithium, Propranolol, and Imovane. My insurance company will not cover TMS Therapy or ECT. My Doctor suggested next course of action would be tricyclics. I will try anything at this point, but I have read several times that these meds only work in the short term for sleep. That is my main problem- sleep. Doug, what are your thoughts on the Amitriptyline? I heard you say you've taken it for years. Does it still help you with sleep? And do you think Doxepin should be tried before the Amitryptyline? I am so desperate. Thank you for your feedback.
I have been on amitriptyline for 24 years but I know other people who have been on Remeron and trazodone. When amitriptyline doesn't work, I use Ambien, but only once or twice a week here it is your problem depression or insomnia or both?
@@DouglasBloch Thank you for your response. My new Doctor diagnosed it as Chronic Psychophysiological Insomnia. But I believe the general consensus is Major Depressive Disorder and the insomnia is a by-product. Is it safe to take Ambien once or twice a week? I will take Ambien or Lorazepam when I absolutely need it- but I have been trying to avoid it so I wouldn't become dependent on it. I am hoping and praying the Amitriptyline or Doxepin works for me!
I would talk to your doctor to see what he or she recommends. I do not have an addictive personality so that if I have a good night sleep with Ambien, make sure I don’t take it the next night. Spacing it out seems to not create dependence. But everyone is different
There are many tools and techniques that you can use that do not involve medication. Check out my video called “how to rewire you’re anxious brain.” In addition I have a video called “three steps to overcoming worry.”
Four months ago I started having trouble staying asleep. I never had any problem going to sleep but staying asleep was almost impossible. My sleep was fragmented and wasn't deep. This sleep deprivation also led to polyarthralgia and faster heart beat during the day. So a doctor prescribed me Alprazolam 0.5 mg. I have been taking this medicine ever since and I sleep so well and all other troubles associated with sleep deprivation are gone but I have read a few articles online that imply that long term use of Alprazolam is not safe. I'm concerned.
I have had severe insomnia for 20 years. I have been on Alprazolam for at least that long and I am fine. Yes it can be addictive if you abuse it. But I don’t, I use it almost strictly for sleep and doctors have prescribed it to me for decades. They wouldn’t have if I abused it. I personally would not worry about long term affects, I’m a case study in point. I’m still on it by the way and will be for life
Nitric oxide (NO) is a messenger molecule that can affect sleep and sleep-breathing disorders, and insomnia can be a symptom of a nitric oxide deficiency. Research suggests that NO plays a role in sleep by: Setting cerebral perfusion NO acts as a cerebral vasodilator that determines the overall level of cerebral perfusion during sleep. Determining differences in CVR and CBF NO is the main factor that determines the differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) between sleep and wake states. Producing sleep Research suggests that NO accumulation in the brain's basal forebrain is necessary for sleep production.
L-arginine or L-citrulline are also good to produce nitric oxide and these or nitric oxide deficiencies causes erectile disfunction. Sorry if TMI but if you have insomnia and ED then nitric oxide should be your remedy and you can buy these over the counter. Amazon also sells all of these. Research, research and research 😊.

I have a couple questions i hope you find the time to answer for me... I ask because the antihistamine effect makes me very groggy the next day, so I'm curious about maybe trying Trazadone...
I have. not heard that Remeron works like an antihistamine. Both medications make people drowsy. Which one works better is usually done by trial and error. Talk to your prescriber about this

I just went through a bad bout of insomnia. I hope you can work with a therapist and prescriber to get some decent sleep. I just did that and it helped me.
The only thing that ever worked for me is Ambien. Nothing else has worked. I can stay up for two days. Sometimes I feel like going crazy. Sometimes I just can't take it. I was taking Ambien for years and years. They stopped giving it to me. I'm stressed now because it's the only thing that work. I'm trying Doxepin tonight for first time. I doubt it will work. Nothing has ever worked.

You have done a great job in your sleep hygiene. I’m glad it’s working
@@DouglasBloch Thank you. My Healing from Depression arrived today. It's very comprehensive! There's a lot to it.
I'm very much looking forward to reading it and learning from it in the next few weeks.
Thanks again!
How much are you on?
Good luck!

@@DouglasBloch what did you take now for insomia?
It works!!
I know this is an old post, but I really hope you're doing better.
Three members of my family, including myself. I also went to rehab. I am bipolar, and have serious insomnia. I take ambien, and am grateful for this medication. I feel great during the day. Once I am asleep, I stay asleep for 8 hours.

Benzos ONLY ONLY for 2-4 weeks and the risk of addiction huge and hell pure hell to withdrawal pure hell

Benzodiazepine withdrawal almost killed me numerous times. Be very careful.
Not getting sleep is more harmful than some sleeping medication. I’d rather take my Xanax than not be able to sleep, hope to find something that would last longer in the benzodiazepines. Xanax is great for anxiety it helps very fast and is the best for myself personally speaking.

Hi Douglas my insomnia is worsened with me having tinnitus and hearing loss and a perforated eardrum, and doc said there is no cure for tinnitus.💕
Perhaps there are some medications that will be so good at knocking you out that the ringing in the ears will not matter.

Yes. ABSOLUTELY.
What happened Soma? They always worked like a charm.
I am taking 2mg of Lorazepam every night for so many years already,,,you haven't mentioned it on this vid
You are correct. Sometimes benzodiazepines are used for sleep, although some psychiatrists do not like to prescribe them because they are habit forming and people develop tolerance. It seems like the medication is working for you

I take amitriptyline. You can talk to your prescriber about the medication
there's one more class of medicines which were used for insomnia which are addictive and can also prove fatal in withdrawal, not mentioned here, and they are the Barbiturates, very common in the 50s and 60s but were replaced by the Benzodiazepines because Barbiturates are lethal at doses not too much greater than the therapeutic dose.
I would say the most sedating medication of the Tricyclic Antidepressant class discussed here is definitely Amitriptyline, followed by Dosulepin, then probably Doxepin but they aren't pleasant but will help sleep.
Amitriptyline is a very long acting drug too. I'm on 75mg
Are you saying the other two are taken all together or is it one or the other along with the Amitriptyline? Thank you in advance.

Same here. I've been treated with antidepressants for sleep for many years. But I am 99.9% sure the insomnia was first, followed by depression later.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a messenger molecule that can affect sleep and sleep-breathing disorders, and insomnia can be a symptom of a nitric oxide deficiency. Research suggests that NO plays a role in sleep by:
Setting cerebral perfusion
NO acts as a cerebral vasodilator that determines the overall level of cerebral perfusion during sleep.
Determining differences in CVR and CBF
NO is the main factor that determines the differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) between sleep and wake states.
Producing sleep
Research suggests that NO accumulation in the brain's basal forebrain is necessary for sleep production.
Remeron, less than 7 mg works for many people.
What about taking amitriptyline with trazadone I’m worried about interactions is that a safe kid I’m only taking 50 mg of trazadone and 25 mg of amitriptyline?

Just found your channel and I love it! I’ve tried every single one of those pills throughout my life except for doxepin and they all make me hyper and they definitely don’t help me sleep. Do you have any recommendations for me? I hate being the only person I know that can’t get a good nights sleep and nothing works
You are not alone. 100 million people in America have sleep disorders Pierre there is something called sleep hygiene that I talk about in my other videos which has to do is good habits that you can cultivate that promote sleep. There's a book about it called no more sleepless nights by Peter Hauri. Here is are two videos I did about sleep.

So did doxepin work for you ?
Doxepin works well for me. Started at 150 mg, now on 25 mg.
My doctor said to take Magnesium. Sometimes it works/doesn't work
Magnesium also helps some forms of sleep apnea -- the non-obstructive kind, especially (it sure helps mine!). Calcium at bedtime can aid relaxation also (but I don't take much, since it can contribute to arterial plaque in men).

Agomelatine its safe ?
I don't know anything about that medication
If you suffer from insomnia please do a heavy metal detox. Our pineal gland is responsible to release melatonin so we can sleep. The gland gets coated from toxins.

I wonder if zoloft and perphenazine calcified my pineal gland over a long period of use? I have removed my self from those medications slowly and no longer take xanax for sleep, I think I am recovering...besides simplifying my life.
@@donnavorbach215no… you just became chemically dependant on benzos to wind down at night
My psychiatrist prescribed me (Abilify) Aripiprazole for my depression, anxiety and insomnia. What are your thoughts? Does it work well for insomnia?
I don’t know, but it is a good medication. Ask your psychiatrist about the insomnia
@@DouglasBloch He said it should work for the insomnia as well but after doing my research it showing that it doesn’t.
@@DouglasBloch I was prescribed Valium for my insomnia. What is your take on Valium VS Xanax for insomnia? Thx
I have a couple questions i hope you find the time to answer for me...
From what i understand, Remeron, which I've taken on and off for years, works like an antihistamine and that's what helps you sleep. If that's the case, why not just take a benadryl?
Also, does Trazadone work the same way in regards to sleep? Is the antihistamine effect as strong as Remeron? I ask because the antihistamine effect makes me very groggy the next day, so I'm curious about maybe trying Trazadone...
I have. not heard that Remeron works like an antihistamine. Both medications make people drowsy. Which one works better is usually done by trial and error. Talk to your prescriber about this
@@DouglasBloch thanks :)
I guess I’ll be on benzos for
The rest of my life unless I check into a treatment center. I’ve been on them for 20 years every single day every night …… I’ve reduced it to now just taking it at night, but I cannot sleep without it and every time I try to reduce it taper off it’s literally hell I basically feel suicidal so it’s either stay on it or go to a treatment center I guess.
I've been takin amytriptiline 10 mg but it raises my heart rate quite a bit and thus interferes with my sleep.
You should definitely talk with your prescriber about that and ask him or her to make adjustments
