Having watched a lot of television lately I have noticed that movies love to make the bow appear magical... This video argues a few of the mistakes made. Enjoy
Idea for this little series. Horned helmets and when/what they were from compared to cinema, Nordic warriors wearing lamellar and gambeson over how they are portrayed to be shirtless, or the flintlock pistol edging out plate armor!
A bow can be deemed to be about to break at full draw, so it's not a good idea to hold it, as she does in the clip. I've had two bows break their upper limbs over my head like that and it put me on the ground. Glad my 180lb yew longbow never did, though. That would've put me into the ground.
Thanks for adding this extra fact... I should have mentioned that... did not think, its hard to focus with a small human taking up 99% of my free time :) I doubt I could draw a 180lb bow.... I'm too short/weak :) I am so touched by all the wonderful comments... It means alot
The secret is that they hide a small amount of gunpowder just behind the fletching. Too bad people don't actually light the barrel of their gun on fire before shooting. That would be the coolest.
came for the thumbnail of the battlemasters archers, stayed cause you made some excellent points that anybody whose done somearchery knows, Battlemasters released by milton bradley, Figs by games workshop & based loosely on warhammer fantasy. I got a friend w/1 NIB if anybody iterested?
Amazing, nice spot and thank you. You are right on all accounts for the Figs. I am hoping to do a board game review on BM at some point (I have done space crusade). Ohh my childhood, such good times
Maybe they needed the fire on arrows to see where they hit? :D Like tracer ammuniation is used to guide fire on a battlefield? (do I need to add that this is not a serious question (hence the smily face) :P )
Agreed it might effect morale... if it was in the night... otherwise it would be pretty similar to a normal rain of arrow, your more worried about being stabbed than set on fire :)
Did you know Arthur Wellesley (ahem you know who 😎 ) wanted a battalion or something of archers ( War bows methinks) in the Peninsula war against wicked boney as archers could loose quicker and were more accurate than the musket, quicker than the rifle. Now that would have been interesting. But he was told unfortunately there were none or not enough in the whole of England ( UK ?) So unfortunately he had to beat those dashed froggies without archers. An archer told me sometime ago it was still technically legal to kill a Welshman if he is walking down high Street ( or main Street/ rd I guess) if they are carrying a Bow and Arrow. ( Maybe I should say the law had not been repealed instead?) How true ? I'll say being as he was very knowledgeable about his hobby/ sport I simply took his word for it.
Major Sven. Can I suggest a piece, video or whatever you call it on the West India regiment formed in 1795 with free black men and purchased slaves. The Carribbean was a disease ridden back of beyond, no soldier worth his Salt ( a Roman expression I believe? ) Would wish to be sent. But we Brits noticed black men did rather better than white so a regiment of black men was formed up. Their uniforms owed their existence to a famous woman. Also once Slavery was totally abolished this regiment of now free black men received equality in pay and conditions as their white counterparts. Amongst other things they also served in WW1. Hopefully just enough to either remind you or interest you. A story not often told of a Regiment with a proud service. The military has often been called racist when in fact, though there was undoubtedly racists in the military, treatment of its multi cultural, multiethnic. Soldiers on the whole had to be fair and was reflected in the loyalty of those soldiers etc. If it hadn't been then the British would not have been able to govern the largest Empire ever. The WIR for me is a prime example they effectively got Equal rights and Equal pay in a time when the opposite was true why ? Well my answer would be danger money and because good British regiments would not serve there or if they did they soon suffered. Anyway if you're not aware of them please take the time to check them out and decide whether it's worth a vid or not.
Thank you so much for the information Andrew, I will look into this I had no idea the West India Regiment sounds like an excellent idea for a video. I also want to do one on the bow vs the musket at some point, its an interesting topic. Your story about Wellesley will be used when I do it as an intro (if you don't mind). I really hope I do them justice :) I want to thank you so much for the support and for watching, it means a great deal,
Major Sven No I don't mind at all. I've forgotten where i either read it or saw it in a documentary about the peninsula war. But if I did watch it I think it would Have been the late Richard Holmes brilliant 3 part documentary about the Iron Duke or possibly Bernard Cornwell documentary about the peninsula war again brilliant if neither of them, I've read it somewhere. It's just one of those interesting facts/ stories that never leave your mind, you forget the rest but it just stays in your mind. I hope I have helped and not confused you.
That Major baby fellow needs his own channel
Agreed, the little dude is the heart of the channel now :)
quite right

Very good video idea and one I will steal at some point, thanks Jake
I always thought it looked impractical!
And they are.. Thanks for watching man :)
Your baby is so adorable MSG!!!!! ^_^
Cheers Chazzy, I am a proud dad :)
good info on the bows n stuff I honestly never thought about that. had to show off the minis at the end huh?
Well it is called history in miniature so I need to include it somewhere :)
Wait! It's not called the major baby show ?
If he let me put him down now and again I might do a video without him, but sadly not possible yet... A man can dream though, a man can dream :)
Fair points, but: "Nock.....Draw......Loose" - with the addition of "Mark" after Nock (and therefore before "Draw") in the case of the English.
Thanks, this is how I learn :)

Maybe in the world of dragons ...maybe bows are guns....
most likely true :)
I like to put flaming guns at the end of my arrows. Might as well go all the way.
Ha.. that would work.... I think :)
The secret is that they hide a small amount of gunpowder just behind the fletching.
Too bad people don't actually light the barrel of their gun on fire before shooting. That would be the coolest.
I didnt know that, thats very interesting... also Agreed :)
I would love to know what you think of Arrow :). How accurate is that with modern bows?
Not watched it, but it is now on my list :)

You've been watching game of thrones.... I don't because my parents say I'm too young and it's far to late to even bother catching up anyways.
Game of thrones is the best man, but yeah your too young at the moment

Seriously though. Rain of arrows and even the fire could have great effect on the morale. Just imagine yourself standing under such of an rain.
Agreed it might effect morale... if it was in the night... otherwise it would be pretty similar to a normal rain of arrow, your more worried about being stabbed than set on fire :)
I would like to say that I subscribe on the very first video I watched you
Wow, thank you very much that is a major compliment :) expect more history videos soon (I have alot of miniatures around the house)
combining #dadlife with #videolife
Ha... I am getting there... Not
what are you talking?.. you were holding a miniature archer the whole time ;)
Ha, yeah he is the best :) now to teach him about toys
