I don’t recall Iran placing restrictions on Shahid drones or North Korea on artillery shells. But somehow the UK is crossing another red line.
I have been in Kharkiv, since before the May assault and permission to use American weapons came only after the Ukrainians had been forced to expend resources checking the Russians.
The long period of notice of the assault (at least four weeks,) and the general view that it could not seriously endanger the city, meant that it was only ever a ruse to draw Ukrainians away from the eastern front - a more desirable and potentially profitable area
In this, (largely due to a refusal to allow the use on Russian, soil, of American, precision weapons,) they were successful.
Again and again in this war, western aid has come, but only after it was needed.
i am definitely embarrassed by my country's lack of focus on this major world issue. We are too busy worrying which senile old man to make president. sad
I'm facinated at how this strategi of the largest of the western nations can be summerized as "too little, too late". I really cannot fathom just how incompetent on a political level this is being handled. I've been thoughly depleted of any hope that we can handle actual difficult crisis such as the climate by this point.

I wonder how those in the US wanting Ukraine to cede territory to end the conflict would feel if it was their territory. Imagine if Putin had decided to declare the original sale of Alaska illegal and invaded Alaska to take it back.
Russia has recently declared exactly that. They now are claiming that the sale of Alaska was improper somehow and are claiming Alaska is the territory of Russia. They will invade if US politics becomes placating enough to Moscow that it neuters the effectiveness of the US military. A combination of force and 5th column political warfare.
That's because they don't want to keep funding this war. Everyone knows Ukraine is one if not the most corrupt country in the EU. Ukraine can't defeat Russia, they don't have the manpower.

It would be, I think, a good idea to publish the text of the Budapest Memorandum and other treaties/agreements, showing dates and signees. People seem to be unaware of how often (always) Russia violates the agreements it signs. Can anyone criticise Zelensky for saying that we cannot trust agreements that Russia signs? (Look at Georgia, too, who gave up 20% of its territory in exchange for the end of the Russian military invasion and independence.)

Article 1 of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum states:
"1. The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE [Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe] Final Act, to respect the Independence and Sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine."
In February 2014, about 2 weeks BEFORE the coup, a phone call between Victoria Nuland (Assistant Secretary of State) and Geoffrey Pyatt (US ambassador to Ukraine) was leaked in which they (i.e. the USA) were deciding who would be in and out the post-coup Ukrainian government. So much for respecting the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine.

Yes the UK Telegraph swallowed the narrative. It turns out the assassination attempt has done nothing on the polls.
The American GOP, at the direction of Donald Trump, fought hard to delay arms to Ukraine.
It was also tied to several other important issues within that bill, an inability to pass legislation was due to multiple factors. Ukraine needs to be prepared for such bumps, ideally/thankfully Europe somewhat stepped up in the mean time.

The business insider acknowledges that Russia has advantages in military aviation and air defense. Russia is capable of producing missiles and gliding bombs in large quantities, which makes its military industry more efficient.
Problems with Western air defense systems
The same insider also acknowledges that Western air defense systems cannot compare to Russian ones in terms of quantity and effectiveness. Russia successfully uses kamikaze drones to deplete the reserves of Ukraine's missile interceptors.
Consequences for Ukraine
CNN acknowledges that 80% of Ukraine's non-nuclear energy was destroyed by Russia. Western air defense systems were unable to protect Ukraine's energy system.
I am not a supporter of Keir Starmer, however credit where credit’s due if has definitely approved the use of Storm Shadow missiles on military targets within Russia. I hope he also increases UK defence spending sooner rather than later, in these uncertain times we need to strengthen our military urgently.

The delay in aid made a huge difference. I would like to argue though, that the Russian minefields that did so much of the harm, would have been only a tiny fraction of their strength had Ukraine just attacked in the winter or early spring. The offensives in Kharkiv and Kherson were done with mostly Soviet equipment, yet Ukraine waited 7 entire months to launch a new offensive.
I was hoping for hearing good news for Ukraine and I believe, by Jove, I've got it !

I am Canada and follow US politics. I echo Alyona’s view that she was suspending judgment on Trump until he selected Vance. I would be somewhat encouraged by the fact that David Cameron had a positive impact on Trump and the Republican position on Ukraine aid. Trump wants to be a problem solving hero, and needs to have the support of his constituency. Vance is very smart. I would encourage the development of a sound strategy and put it to Trump before the election that sells the hero problem solver on the need for “supporting Ukraine” which actually is a bargain, not giving Ukraine actual money but old kit, and pays the uS military to get new state of the art kit. Don’ just sit on your hands!

The US would like Europe to take its defense seriously and for all countries in Europe to spend 4% of GDP on defense.
NATO agreements are to spend 2% of gdp on defense. Many of them didn’t. That was Mr. Trumps complaint when he was president.

President Biden should remove all restrictions on targeting while he is still President. This policy change should be made soon to create several months of results before the election. Waiting too long could result in it being too easy to flip the policy back upon a potential change in administration. An entrenched successful policy is more difficult to change.
Who knows Ukraine might only have these few months remaining, and then it’s everyone for themselves.

Re the Comment regarding T-55 Tanks being seen on transports, and the notion that they were built in 1946 is not correct. They entered production in 1954 & entered service (the clue is in the name) in 1955. The lineage dates back to step changes from the Late war Soviet tanks, but this model was not a simple modification.

Ukraine is not a democracy. Elections have been abandoned. Zelensky’s term as president has ended.
And the US CIA backed a coup to over throw the democratically elected government in 2014. Don’t give me this democracy BS. The last time I checked democracies gave elections. If Zelensky had an election he would lose.
Question: Could Russia ”force” freeze of these lines by just stopping its attacks? This level of attrition is unsustainable for Russia but if it just went on defensive, could Ukraine realistically attack and recapture its lost territory? Last year Ukraine’s offensive was unsuccessful because defending is so much more easy in this war.
The Force freeze at this time is not possible last year it would have worked but our funding got cut

One of Trump's strengths, particularly in Afghanistan and Syria, was his strict policy of allowing his generals free reign to prosecute military action. This was his lesson learned from Vietnam. Managing war from the White House is a concept which leads to defeat. Allow the Pentagon and commanders on the battlefield to do what is necessary.
People confuse Trump's aversion for initiating war, with his steadfast approach to finishing one currently underway.
In relation to Ukraine, he will not allow America to be humiliated by Russia. He won't allow US forces to be directly involved, but that won't lead him to acquiesce to Putin either. Ukraine will continue to receive ISR support, advanced weapons, and material support. Trump will not be cowed by Putin, Xi, Zelenski, or the Europeans who he warned of the Russian threat many times. NATO ignored him, keeping their contributions a fraction of the 2% required by treaty. It is Europe's prewar inaction which leads to America saying 'They were warned, it's their continent, it's their investment in Russia which enabled Putin, and it's ultimately their war.'
