- Chief Scientist Carl Nelson shows us an extreme science project using hydrogen peroxide to make foam.
It turns out that the bottle of hydrogen peroxide you have in the bathroom really does nothing for small cuts and scrapes. Check out this article from the New York Times that talks about how peroxide use for cuts is really not all that effective.
Of course don’t miss our video below that shows what you can do with concentrated hydrogen peroxide.
We’ve received a few questions about hydrogen peroxide and it’s effectiveness on small cuts and scrapes. Head over to: imaginationstat... to find references on the topic.

The answer for those in chemistry.
Initial Appearance: 35% hydrogen peroxide along with dish soap in a tube with hydrogen peroxide.
Observation: There is a tube with 35% hydrogen peroxide and dish soap gets pour and mixed with the 35% hydrogen then a catalytic get poured into the tube making a foam like substance come out of the tube.
Type of change: chemical change.
evidence: The 35% hydrogen and the dish soap along with the catalytic make a foam substance come out of the tube.

Hydrogen peroxide is a cytotoxic agent (meant to destroy cells completely, compared to acid it may cause an effect of 'oxidative stress').
"H2O2, a highly reactive agent, can react under certain conditions with a variety of cellular components. These reactions include the lipid peroxidation of membrane and hydroxylation of proteins and DNA. The reactions can take place in the presence of oxygen and are fairly rapid, the H2O2 being converted to water and oxygen. Experiments were carried out in vitro to assess the ability of this agent to destroy cancer cells without generating dangerous by-products. The direct administration of aqueous H2O2 into solid tumors has the potential to cause tumor cell death."
+Sedokun I was very irritated by his comments on h2o2. had to read the comments I knew someone would point out the health benefits
+Magnum Opus Productions H2O2 naturally produced in human's body. Here's a great article about it: www.febsletters.org/article/S0014-5793(00)02197-9/abstract
Finally someone who understand it! And also H.P can kill any type of organic matter when it react with iron which produce Hydroxyl radical which is highly reactive and then at time of this thing produce any organic matter to come in contact with it will eventually be dead and assured. That's why bacteria which use a lot of iron can't make it in the people's body where H.P is abundant (I think)

Maybe it doesnt clean wounds, but it's definitely a biocide and can be used to sanitize surfaces. You still shouldnt use it to disinfect your wounds though, because it doesnt just kill bacteria, it also kills the human cells, which slows down healing (which means a higher risk of infection and more scarring).
Nahhhh I use 3% all the time, and it works very well. Reduces the war for your body to fight. Especially because you can't actually see what viral loads, or bacteria strains got in. Plus I nearly cut my finger off so the doc submerged my hand in H2O2, and it stopped the bleeding completely. Finger healed up with no mark. Was astonished.
Boy I wish the Saturday morning newscasts where I'm from did something like this.

Hello, everyone! Im asking for your help; i am having hard time with my assignment.
Question: some chemicals, like hydrogenperoxide, are prone to decomposition by photocatalysis. How can you prevent photocatalysis?
Erm.... reducing UV exposure I'd assume.
Put it in a dark coloured container
Love the thumbnail
I wanna make that for mt homework but what do i do to clean it up? Since it includes chemicals
a little confused on what role the soap plays. I thought the oxygen was stored in the peroxide itself and that a O2 was released as the peroxide converts to water.
I think i get it. the soap traps the bubbles from bursting and releasing the O2 into the surrounding air.
soap makes the foam i think
Hidrogen Peroxide doesn't directly kill all bacterias but it does kill anaerobic bacteria because of the oxigen.
its a chemical change btw
Thanks
Does the amount of detergent affect the amount of foam formed?
My school's chemistry club is planning on doing this lab as a demo! :) How do you properly clean this up?
Hi maliktuber, we usually put down a layer of garbage bags or plastic sheeting to capture the bubbles and then throw that in the trash. The end products are water, soap, food coloring and the potassium iodide. We wash the glassware with an excess of water.

Will be the same effect in case of only 3%? Could some one claim that 3% is not going to be deomposed even if heated up to 100+C?
Can you say how you did it? What did you use an happened please tell me!!
Can anyone tell me how much catalyst is needed for this ? Tryjng to get big eruption
Hi could l know what react with hydrogen peroxide soap and ??? Ian ask about the substance in the conical flask
Potassium iodide
Thank you
What was they catalyzing agent?
+Peter Emm, I used a 2 Molar Potassium Iodide solution as the catalyst.
Carl Nelson, Chief Scientist, Imagination Station
Use yeast
Would yiest give off that same explosion effect?
no, it would be much calmer. yes, it would still foam out, but not as intensely.

so cool!
Yeah we also use hella concentrated h2o2 for rockets
Where does one find the catalyst? This can be great to mix with concrete to make aircrete.
What is the catalyst..?!
Can this be used to make Aircrete by mixing into Portland cement slurry? Where can you buy 35% Hydrogen Peroxide?
Which salts did they use (Red and Blue)?
Anybody know what's in the beakers other than soap and food colouring?
What are all the materials necessary?
which chemical gas law is used here?
What can we use to disinfect then?
throw a match on it
+suncu91 Well, unfortunately that would be a little underwhelming here since while the foam is filled with oxygen, there is no Fuel to actually combust. You need Fuel, Ignition source and oxygen for something to burn. Here at match tossed into the foam (soapy water) would burn a little brighter for a second or so and then be extinguished.
Carl Nelson, Chief Scientist, Imagination Station
+ImaginationStationOH it also generates hydrogen
+Leo Madero I don't think so . The decomposition of H2O2 produces O2 and H2O.

How does the soap capture it?
What was the catalyst?
Should I use liquid or powder?
abneyk1 Either would work, however, I'd suggest buying the powder and making a concentrated solution. We typically use a 2 molar solution.

+ImaginationStationOH in layman's terms... What is a 2 molar? What do I mix the iodide powder in? Water?
That's pretty cool
That is neat, but are you able to touch it?😮
Gabbriel Simmons you can touch the foam after it cools down. It's pretty hot initially. Of course there is a lot of food coloring in there and some iodine, both of which will stain your hands. -Carl Nelson, Chief Scientist
