- 5 Big Decisions That Have Finally Caught Up to Pep Guardiola
There was a time not too long ago when Manchester City seemed untouchable, brushing aside competition and marching to trophies with an air of inevitability. But now, the cracks in Pep Guardiola's dynasty are not only visible-they're widening. City have lost six of their last seven games, and a recent defeat to Liverpool has left them trailing 11 points behind Arne Slot’s side. It's uncharted territory for Guardiola, and the stress is clearly showing. His tactical genius, once hailed as undeniable, is now under scrutiny as several key decisions have come back to haunt him.

Not signing a rodri back up is the biggest mistake
They did sign a Rodri backup, never used him and then let him go. Remember Kalvin Philips?
@@abeljack6969Tbf, replacing an injured rodri to Kelvin philips is like replacing saliba with rob holding

I agree with most things but you're wrong on two.
Firstly, the traditional fullbacks were a defensive liability even if they were a great attacking threat. Using Ake at left back and sometimes Akanji at right back is the defensive solidity that won City the treble.
Secondly, Alvarez didnt leave because pep underestimated his ability, he left because he would not be City's no.1 striker while Halaand was there.
I agree but now they have liabilities in the fullback positions. Gvardiol has been poor and Walker has fallen off. Someone traditional like Robinson at Fulham would have allowed another threat to be present for City
Regarding Alvarez, the complaints came over when he wasn’t given minutes in crucial games, for example during the elimination against Real Madrid. There was a lack of real confidence from Guardiola on him
Gvardiol has been good mate. Walker hasn’t
@@alarrim29574gvardiol?? He is currently one of their worse player💀
Whole city play shit ik but among all of them gvardiol is one of the worst
I'm a Juve fan and thus don't watch much EPL but my main takeaway from watching City play us was that there was no plan B. They were just going to pass the ball side to side the entire match and hope for the perfect opportunity. But an Italian side is completely fine with that. Juve knew that as long as Gatti and Kalulu kept Haaland in check, we could limit City to long range shots that are easier to save. The plan worked to perfection, and the entire time I couldn't help but wonder where the change of plan was coming from. When Pep's Bayern came back from 4-2 down to break our hearts in the Champions League knockout stages, they were able to adjust tactically to what Mad Max had had that Juve team do. This time around, Pep couldn't do that
As a Juve fan in that game I was very glad to see them with ball passing it side to side, i felt that tactic really helped us. For some reason we have a harder time to score when we have loads of possesion in a match bc we lack creativity but playing on the counter suited us

A winning mentality that does not understand the pain of losing and the failure to see in it the path towards success will always wither away at the first sign of failure.
That ought to explain the 6 failures in a row for Manchester City under Guardiola which resulted in these recently unimaginable losses.
Knowing how to lose is such an important ingredient of real success.
You failed to mention how important Alverez was to Foden. As a pair they fed off of each other scoring often. Now Foden does little. Spot on for Palmer, but we knew that was a grave mistake right away. The younger players do not seem to be the TEAM system that MC was. Few passes that ping-pong around the defenders allowing them to score so effortlessly.
I think they'll need to overhaul the midfield like there a major holes in the midfield and Cdm
As others have pointed out, there's a gaping Kalvin Phillips-shaped hole in that midfield.
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia yep it's worse when pep can't trust younger midfielders until he realises their old and needs to overhaul the midfield
The roost are coming to chicken for City. What a wonderful sight🤣😂😅
That's an interesting take... 😂😂😂
Letting Youth players leave has been a problem, and not giving them a chance aswell, although Palmer wouldn't be much help this year as our problems lie in our set up and week midfield not to mention he was never getting and chance and even now he would be behind both Foden and Kdb if he had stayed
Fallbacks don't really make sense as we won the treble with 4 cb's, it's the way he uses his fallbacks that leeds us defensively unstable, Zinchenko cost us the Ucl and cancelo made us just as vulnerable
95 mill for Alverez who wanted to leave is no problem, its the desison to not replace him, with Palmer we have back ups, but we now have nothing for haaland
It's not wrong to have these players they are effective, and teams struggle to stop them, tones of teams have those players and it's not a mistake
Finally, yes 100%
Right after the draw
5:15 Loll Maxx. Have you forgotten what he won in last 7 years. That's easily more than some of the great coaches won in their entire career.
Thanks to referees.
Financially cheating does that
Ok, so on point two, yes, Guardiola shouldn't have let some players go, but come on. Zinchenko is so transformative for Arsenal that I don't remember when was the last time he played in starting 11 there. Cancelo was strange decision, but they won everything after he left. Gvardiol to be bad choice at left is strange statement considering he was the best left back in the world at the end of last season.
this guy has no idea what he’s talking about lol just bs in the video
Palmer forced a move, wasn't pep's/city's choice. Both zinchenko and cancelo did the same. Cancelo fell out with pep because of how he rotated the team (you can't let a player dictate your team selection), so he forced a move away. Alvarez wanted to leave, so Pep had no choice. Pep always says that if a player wants to leave, he won't stop them as it's their decision. Haaland is quite clearly in a transitional phase where he's adapting his game (if you watch City, you'll see he drops back more etc) so it's too soon to call him out.
Finally, Rodri, his injury was due to an accident. He landed awkwardly on his leg, so it had nothing to do with his football workload.
Whoever made this video clearly has a vendetta against pep as they clearly don't have any knowledge regarding each of these situations.
So, with this video being completely wrong, I'll tell you our actual issue. Similar to liverpool a season or two ago, we have an ageing squad where players like KDB can't play back to back full 90s, and we don't currently have anyone near his level. Foden has been injured and is now unwell so hasn't been able to build consistency playing.
It's difficult to buy players these days as all teams are struggling with the financial regulations the PL have put in place (most don't seem to realise). If the FA actually wanted to properly implement a system to stop clubs going into administration, they should monitor clubs' profit/loss to make sure the club is sustainable. They should also introduce a transfer and salary cap. This would need to be agreead ny all leagues though.......
We need to buy a decent CDM and a playmaker.
P.S. Doku can play on either wing. Grealish played CM against forrest. We have only a few non-versatile players but the majority of the squad can play in at least more than one position.
Thanks I read the whole thing
Spot on
Cole Palmer won nothing since leaving 😂
Plays hide and seek in big games
Why would they force a move? Guardiola, on one hand, is known for how players love him, and on the other hand, for how players hate him.
I’m here after the United loss, this is wonderful
Also letting talents like Sane and Mahrez go among others also worsened the team's issues in terms of squad depth.
There was room for Palmer at City when Mahrez left but, as Pep stated, Palmer wanted to leave the club. It was Cole's decision to leave the club
I’m here after the lost to Villa
Who is here after united win 😂

Me too 😂
…aaand back again after the Villa W🚬😏
4:40 almost 3/4 video is finished before addressing the actual issue 🥱- the missing piece in a reliable team: Rodri! He is a machine in the midfield. He provides assists, scores, intercepts and most importantly, controls the tempo of the game allowing KDB to play a natural role of the creative playmaker.
No dynasty lasts forever. 7 years of dominating English football is one of the longest reign. All of Sir Alex's teams usually lasts about 3-5 years of domination.
Sure but how many teams did SAF build and rebuild? How many iterations of Manchester United were there? That's why he's the Greatest Manager of All Time
No buying a RB another CM and selling Palmer biggest mistakes
Haaland is neutralized not by the defence but by the lack of through ball passing into free areas where Haaland can defeat any defender. The problem is players like Foden, Grealish, or Doku first instinct is to dribble to beat the defender twice or until they lose the ball. Haaland is best natural scorer and if you are not use him he is left frustrated in the box.
Here after Juventus game . Im united fan and im assuming that they will batter us badly this weekend.

A few of your reasons seem quite strange. I mean, we can all agree about letting Palmer and Alvarez go, but saying things like Doku/Haaland being too specialist and Gvardiol/Ake not being capable left backs seem like very strange reasons that just don't seem true yo me.
Surely Palmer and Alvarez left as they knew they were unlikely to be first choice ahead of KdB and Haaland
Haha Philip Lahm he said...😂😂😂
I know right wtf
He was giving an example listen carefully.
I'm lost what's wrong with Philip lahm?
2:28 attacking thrust? gvardiol
He score some headed goals doesn't really make him an "attacking fullback".
Did you watch Cancelo at city?
I think Pep allowing players to leave just because they were wanting a bigger role was a mistake on his part. He should have convinced them to stay like Cole Palmer and Julian Alvarez. Zinchenko and Cancelo were meh 🫤 players. Julian Alvarez would have made a big difference this season, alleviating Halaand from defenses. Man City should sign Zubimendi or Kimmich to cover Rodri’s spot.
From the perspective of Palmer and Alvarez though they were behind KdB and Haaland in the pecking order, they knew their first team opportunities would be limited
Zinchenko not a game changer, any Arsenal fan will tell you as much
Loss of Rodri been the big difference for City, in a similar vein look at Chelsea struggles in the seasons since the cl final with kante constantly injured.
Haaland has more to his game, just can't use it in the system
You forgot to mention that Cole Palmer would have been a great understudy to De Bruyne especially with his recent injury history.
That was the plan, however Palmer felt he was ready and didnt want to play second fiddle for much longer. Turns out he was right.
I forget who but a coach once said that no matter how successful a coach is, after years he will lose his power on the team.
His words won't have the same power and players will listen to him less and less.
At this point, there are only two things left that can be done : either the coach leaves, or the players leave.
Nahh thats preposterous. How about the players play for the club and just do their thing.
I mean when we(Man U) imploded, it was a multi-year nuclear explosion. I am impressed at Guardiola's efficiency, even in failure, he's so gd efficient at it. I still feel he did Ibra dirty at Barca, but that was a lifetime ago.
Never liked Pep as a person but kuddos to the man he managed to force the other league teams to up their game🫡!
If I were Guardiola, I wouldn't consider bringing Pogba into the team and rather fight to get Ngolo Kante
Who's here after United loss😂

Thanks
why don't city just recall kalvin phillips? ipswich won't let him go or something?
Cole palmer coming to chelsea is the same as chelsea letting go so many talents like kdb and salah
Who's here after the 2-1 loss to Aston villa? 😂
Am the happiest man they are going through this....City has always bein' a small team
After yet another disappointing results against Crystal Palace (2-2 draw), in which Rico Lewis got a red card, I'm 100% sure Manchester City will go trophyless this season.
It only gets even worse as there's still an impending punishment as a part of 115 charges, which could have relegated them to the Championship!
Keep sucking those lemons. You know f all.
The 115 is an investigation they haven’t been charged yet. Please can we stop accusing them without any proof that what’s been alleged it’s factual. Imagine the scenes if City are innocent. They will sue Arsenal and Liverpool for all the slander. Not to mention the FA
Theres no way youre calling cancelo a better fullback than gvardiol!! Even barcelona ditched cancelo at the end of his loan because he is a defensive liability
Barca let him go cos they couldnt pay for him.
It's not natural for any team to dominate for 6-7 years. So it's natural that City have started to fade. The dominance they have had is astonishing but it had to end. Ancelloti, Ferguson et al didn't win the league every season. The way City have fallen off the cliff is quite astonishing though. But they'll be back
However one thing that hasn't been mentioned by anyone as having an impact is the impending verdict on 115 counts of financial shenanigans.
Unfair to blame City for letting Palmer go, from Palmer's perspective he had Kevin de Bruyne ahead of him in the pecking order, he clearly knew he would get more game time at Chelsea
Who is here after loss from aston villa.
The writing has been on the wall, if Rodri goes down they wouldn't survive. They failed to sign a replacement for him and then overplayed him so much that it was inevitable that he would be injured
Sneaky you, just putting "Carson in the background"
The big problem is obvious - a lack of quality in most positions beyond the starting 11
GK - Edison is the obvious Number 1, but Ortega is a bit iffy and not anywhere near the level.
Full Back they have Walker & Rico Lewis, Ake and Gvardiol can play left back and Akanji has filled in on the right but it’s not their natural position
Centre Back is probably the best position for depth with Dias, Stones, Akanji, Ake & Gvardiol
Defensive Midfield they only have Rodri
Central Midfield is pretty well stocked with De Bruyne, Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Gundogan, Nunes and Oscar Bobb
Wings - Grealish, Doku, Foden and Savinho
Striker - Haaland
You look at that and you see the problem immediately - they have no natural left backs, they have no back up for Rodri, they only really have one player in Foden who can play on the right wing but it’s not his natural position and they have no backup/plan B for Haaland.
They had Alvarez, Sergio Gomez, Joao Cancelo, Kalvin Phillips, Yan Couto, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte … plenty of options, now they don’t have that
So he's finally getting found out? Put him in charge of a lower league club without much money. See how "great" this guy really is. Or how he's the most overrated manager of all time
would love to see him manager like of sevilla or ac milan, it is good litmus test of his ability
The financial fair play, seems to be running in the background of the team, whether they admit it or not.
City over the past has had strength in depth, but constraints on budget has proven a burden this term. Maybe the players that have left, were to try and balance the books?
At the time Cole Palmer couldn't enter the first team given the kind of players they have. What Makes Guardiola good is not the players, it's the system. Put Big Sam into that team, and you'll see the difference.
Please do a vid Leo about Omar marmoush
Letting alvarez go lost me as a fan, am no longer a cityzen. Pep has always been literally breaking my heart. Loosing Toure,Sane, Palmer and recently Alvarez i couldn't take it anymore. Short term success for long term failure.
Confident Pep will find a way to rebuild, but will it be too late for the title this season? Their title rivals need to capitalise on City’s drop in form.
As a Man U fan its good to see City fall.
The special one would never
In terms of midfield situation city shouldn't never let go of Kalvin Phillips and also guardiola or man city not signing many players honestly I think savinho is useless
Who’s here after the 2-1 lost to Villa😂
Palmer would surely become De brune's heir and bring City back to the top
Season isn’t over yet. I won’t be writing Pep and city off just yet. And that’s coming from a Man Utd fan…
At last, a rival fan with a brain.
This is a spineless Man City fan , they are all going back to their original teams 😂😂😂
Other than Cancello none were first team players. Easy to say Pep "Let them go" but I'm sure they chose to leave for regular minutes
Guardiola has always been an overtinkerer/overthinker. Hes s genius but his players aren’t expressing themselves in the same ways as the past. He looks like he needs a long vacation tbh but his squad is thin in the wrong areas, the ages of key players is catching up to them like crazy as well. Alvarez leaving and not signing a young(er) midfielder to back up Rodri were the biggest errors for sure.
It happened to man United they stuck with the winning team to long and it aged out and they had to start again .
This team has been incredible but when you sell cole paler knowing how good he is to a rival you have issues
Zichenko leaving is irrelevant
He’s not even good enough for arsenal

Pep: messi is a competitor
Messi: walks the first 5 minutes just looking, instead of pressing just watches other side play, has the most walking distance in every season
I'm not saying ronaldo is better than messi actually in my opinion messi is better than ronaldo but saying messi is a competitor that is a big lie he is more like the secret weapon that everyone know it exist but ronaldo is hard working with an average talent and discipline so he is more competitive than messi but messi has a great talent, great luck, and a decent amount of hard work just enough to make him the best
for a player to score 91 goals in a year
@strangeakatheone so? Complete your sentence
@@Iliya8997 that alone should show you the hard work messi expelled in 2012. No one has beaten that record yet. And messi position may allow him to walk around but that is what you see all we know messi is reading the game in a way you could not understand of the ball positioning is important for finding pockets to dip in and having quality vision on the pitch
@strangeakatheone the walking is not for analysing the game is for the time he gets the position
And yes 2012 was a hard year but that season Messi played striker(false 9) and strikers are one of the most running players sometimes. and messi is the goat, Yes that is unbelievable but who other do you expect to come close?
Another is that I didn't say messi isn't hard working I said that pep exampling(don't know its a real word or not🙂) a player that hardly ever runs for the ball(for saving energy)for his players to run and chase the ball is a bad example
@@Iliya8997 I would not say he hardly ever runs especially in his prime but I see your point though and what you are saying
Zinchenko a natural full back 😂😂😂😂😂. He's a midfielder.
Don’t forget letting Romeo Lavia leave
Tells you everything when even the world’s best like pep can make mistake
I am not a City or Guardiola fan but I have to admit that like Arsenal injuries have affected Man City. The rigid system he uses and the fact that he has never had to build a team that has not won for a while makes me question his ability.
To let talents go for Stars seems not to work. I still wonder how out of the blue, just because rodri is not playing, a winning team can fail do fast.
Who's here after Manchester uniteds win
Selling Palmer a massive mistake, but £40M for a player just out of the academy, too good to turn down I suppose, especially when the club is under pressure to ‘balance the books’. His value will be £90M now though 😢
You made some decent points, but saying Pep made choices for "short term success" is a joke. They guy has been winning trophies for A LONG time. Nothing short about it. It's more that all things come to an end.
So you’re saying he let too many players that don’t have a traditional position go, but also saying that he’s relying too much on players that only play one position? I don’t understand
He let go some of his versatile players that offered multiple tactical options. That’s what he means
@ but he said that he should’ve kept Cancelo and Zinchenko
It’s simply he has failed to adequately sign replacements for the players he has sold and he hasn’t been able to effectively sign players to come in and start taking over for the aging players he hasn’t. The transition of the squad hasn’t been good. Almost every signing he has made in the last 2/3 years hasn’t worked out. When a team has been great for an extended period of time you have to start transitioning the squad. Like Liverpool have done in the last 2 years of klopp’s reign
Pep always favored his friends players over skilled players
Put him in charge of Norwich and see how gets on with a shoestring budget
It's Guardiola, not Gahdiola.
why everyone thinks is the rapture? he won titles for years. he does need to prove to anyone. Pep is among the goats
Pep don't make players great..he buys great players.
Even the greatest empires turn to dust over time. He has written Man City into the sporting history books, so pointing out where he has gone wrong is a good fantasy football activity but somewhat insulting to the man.
Not that insulting guy getting paid tens of millions and looks clueless
Man, it feels like this video was made by someone who really really hate guardiola. I couldn't care less about guardiola but let's go thru the list :
Palmer - now it's easy to say that this was a bad decision but 2 years ago, which player would you remove from the team to put Palmer?
Cancelo and zin: zin is the 3rd option in arsenal these days. Cancelo had he's chances in Barcelona and bayern and didn't succeed.
Alvarez : wants the be the first option but again (2 years ago) would you take kdb or haaland to put Alvarez? Today is easy to say yes but 2 years ago, no way.
Plamer would replace Bernardo. Palmer has everything Bernardo has. Bernardo doesn't have the goal capability Palmer does.
@ like I said, now it's easy to say because Bernardo is not performing well.I am talking about 2 years ago.
@Glasi154 Yes, you're correct, but the point this video is trying to make is that decisions back then are affecting City now. My opinion is that they should have been thinking of Bernardo- Gundogan-Bruyne successor. Hence, letting go of Palmer is proving to have been a bad decision. Just my opinion.
I would frame it as long term success with some short term consequences
Aguero!!!!
A poor run and everyone thinks they are completely done. Normally City go on runs after Christmas. It should be interesting.
Pep is not a tactical genius. He just knows how to spend money..
0:00 am i seeing arteta
You lost me when you said Zinchenko(who Arteta doesn’t give a game) and Cancello(who is in Saudi after being rejected by Barca and Bayern) were mistakes to let them leave
Zinchenko can’t get a game for Arsenal . Cancelo had a behind the scenes fall out with Pep and Alvarez couldn’t get into the starting 11
That doesn’t mean City wouldn’t have been better off keeping them all.
Since when has Man City been a team that prides themselves on nurturing young talent? they spend billions for a reason. They only have one Academy player in the team ffs.
Another loss for city and worse, they're loosing to crystal palace ffs
And btw a draw for city is a loss for me
