    Blue side:
    It’s Indrid, innit? Crawler specialist that drills you, stabs you, and blows you up, English style. Can also tunnel and replicate, great at chaffing, and harassing.

    I have a feeling that half the time (not all the time!) upgrading units and getting special abilities are traps. I've been playing a lot of mechabellum lately, and my win percentage goes up hugely as long as I'm thinking "What are the units I want to purchase?" first, and then use spare money to buy everything else out of what remains.
    Falling behind in the unit count is a death spiral, because you then need to spend more to catch up in unit count. Even if it's just 2 extra packs of crawlers, just adding more and more units to the field is the most important thing. Adding the most useful unit per round and making sure your comp covers all 4 bases (chaff, anti-chaff, anti-air, anti-giant) starts getting more natural once you start making sure to always be adding units every turn.
    Also, unless you have a specific plan for the missile (pushing for lethal, staving off lethal on yourself, delaying having to deal with flanking crawlers for a turn, etc), don't be afraid to just save the money for next round instead. Every 50 counts.
    EDIT: The match from 54:30 to 1:10:15 was an absolutely perfect example of this. You bought either 2 or 3 units every round, you made very good use of your resources (even tactically selling units that were being hard-countered), and your opponent overbought upgrades and tech. Also he overbought missiles and shields. Some rounds he didn't buy any units at all. You ended up just having so much more stuff than him that it literally didn't matter what his comp was.

      I'm by no means a great player, hell I'm not even a good player, but I do absolutely agree with you on this. Managing economy is a huge part of the game I find. I've stepped way back from buying upgrades on everything that can be upgraded, especially on chaff - they are just there to delay and die 90% of the time, usually a waste of creds. Upgrades are a little trickier, usually good on your carry unit(s), but just decking out everything with upgrades is a huge no-no. You will lose tempo so hard it's not even funny.
      Likewise I have kind of given up on the Elite Specialist, when I just started against other new players it seemd a no-brainer, but here also your economy and tempo can be easily outpaced, especially in early rounds.

    • @barbariandude
      @barbariandude 16 дней назад +1

      @@jelleklap I actually really like elite specialist, but you do come into the game with the acknowledgement that you're fighting from behind in economy in exchange for winning every equal exchange, which also means you're going to win the tempo war almost guaranteed around round 4-5. It also opens up some mid/late game elite marksman plays with marksmen/pheonixes, as they're guaranteed to be able to level as starting at level 2 is absolutely massive for them.

    • @jelleklap
      @jelleklap 15 дней назад +1

      @@barbariandude Totally agree that Elite Specialist can be viable and really shines mid-to- late, it is just harder to get going early, especially if your opponent has a specialist economy buff and/or hard-counters your starting setup. Still, even if that is not the case, early-to-mid disadvantage is pretty severe IMO with everything costing so much more, levelled expensive chaff in particular is annoying to me if the opponent has good chaff clear, because it will be borderline useless and just feeds exp to his units (base EXP * (2 * Level - 1)). I would much prefer if Elite Specialist didn't just outright require you to purchase level 2 on everything, maybe it could just be a free/discounted Elite Recruitment tower option instead, or something along those lines.

    Crawler burrowing does indeed prevent them from being burnt up in napalm.
    Electromagnetic shots do not go through barriers. The Melting Point can get electromagnetic missile barrage that does damage the shields AND disables tech though, once it gets through. Very handy.
    The Fangs lose to Sledegehammers, but once Fangs get shields, Sledgehammers take too long to get through them. Mechanical Rage is a good upgrade for Sledegehammers to let them clear quicker and to get to the front quicker, in case they are deployed too far back.
    Getting range on Sabertooths means that they don't tank for you as much.
    Consider swapping in some Scorpion tech, the acid and Siege mode are useful, can be combined with double-shot and range. Scorpions are not good against giant units, unless the former have acid.

    The Steel Balls would have worked, but his Electo-Mag Stormcallers disabled the linking so you Sledges didn't all go pop.

    After the game against Wise you talk about what you did wrong, but honestly I think all the problems started from your balls driving in front of your fangs so enemy sledgehammers were free to shoot them while the balls were swarmed with crawlers as seen at 40:15. It's not just a timing thing, but also the fact that fangs outrange balls. Problem persists for most of the game and everything else snowballs from there. I think the lesson from this mistake is to use crawler chaff with balls, or give balls range when combining them with fangs.

    I just love doing random cool shit for armies. Even full crawlers with anti-aerial sandworms with the sandstorm upgrade. Shit is fucking gross. The sandstorm upgrade really is a bread n butter for heavy melee builds

    I keep wanting to like Steel Balls but every time I use them I am disappointed. Maybe if their Mechanical Battalion thingy unleashed crawlers that were a level below the ball that dies I would be more interested. But as it is... they just feel like they never work for me.

    Compare how Indrid plays AoW4 with his meticulous planning and thorough execution, to this, the PVP game, where he often just does things for fun. Fascinating, Indrid, but dont play with the food.

      Everyone buys too little chaff at first. Then they often go through a period where they buy too much and neglect other important roles. You'll find the balance sooner or later.

    Are you maybe placing units too emotionally? You place them far back to "protect" them. And you place them adjacent to make the grids line up. I would think every unit should be their weapon's range away from the scrimmage line (crawlers up at the 50) and nobody should ever be adjacent due to missile attacks. The moment you get shot and one of your units haven't shot yet, you are losing. Watch the replay and focus on one crawler. How many times does it die without attacking and without absorbing any shots for others? Why make it run half the map?

    • @barbariandude
      @barbariandude 16 дней назад +3

      Layering your chaff is actually an important consideration. Ideally, you want 3-4 waves of chaff that arrive at different times. One wave at the line of contact, another one placed further back to arrive late, another one to arrive very late placed all the way at the back, and maybe even some flanking chaff to slow down important units from getting to the line of contact.
      Simply not having enough chaff is a very common new player mistake. You always need more than you think against good players.

    • @jelleklap
      @jelleklap 16 дней назад

      @@barbariandude Yep, you really want a constant stream of chaff, which is why I usually find it beneficial to unlock both crawlers and fangs, due to their respective speed difference you can stretch your chaff for days. Aside from the obvious unique benefits both provide.
