Are you removing the background first before trying to make it the image? Try a background remover site, they work great! :)

Edit: the icon is the png icon rather than the image :$

I found how to undo, but the icon is still the icon of the type of file of the file i use, for a .mov it's the mov icon, for .png it's the png icon, etc.

just click the image icon you put in the get info menu and press delete, it should put the blue folder icon back

this doesnt work for me for some reason. I have tried dragging an image and it doesnt convert into the picture :(

Oh nooo! :( Did you make sure to open the Get Info page? You're gonna want to drag it to the top image on that page, it's the smaller one in the top left!
