  • A follow-up report on the albino African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis) that Jean gave me for my last birthday, 16th April 2021. About three months later they have settled in extremely well and are much bigger and eating as if there is no tomorrow. I need to reassure you that I am not starving them by any means, they just enjoy their food, as do I, and eat the way I do when nobody is watching. Their feeding frenzy is so comical it has become a favourite performance for several local children who visit by appointment to view it. I feed them (the frogs that is) a combination of frozen bloodworms (you can see the little worms floating down at the beginning of this video) and Aquarian Tropical and Temperate Flake Food, the most respected of the dried fish foods. The two pink fish with whom they share their tank are Blind Cave Fish (Astyanax mexicanus) which are both well over ten years old. They seem to share quite amicably, but the dark grey Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus cirrhosus) resents their presence and occasionally has a go at them. With only a sucking mouth and no teeth there isn't much it can do to them but it likes to make its feelings known. Overall, the frogs and other inhabitants have learned to coexist pretty peacefully.
These frogs remain aquatic throughout their lives, although they can survive out of the water for short periods if their ponds dry up. They have been deliberately introduced in many tropical countries because they love eating mosquito larvae and take their mealtimes very seriously.
